Franklin Mortgage & Investment Co. Turns Four, Opens Its Upstairs

Posted by Foobooz on June 18th, 2013

franklinsotack

Today marks the fourth anniversary of Franklin Mortgage & Investment Co. Ah we remember the first days so well, Arthur Kade requesting flavored vodka, followed by vodka, followed by a very puzzled look. And now after four years, the bar is no doubt a success story. And to celebrate, head bartender Al Sotack tells us they will be offering $9 daiquiris for the next month, right through July 18th.

We asked Sotack what’s the deal with the upstairs expansion of Franklin and received a surprising answer. The upstairs has been very quietly open for the past three weeks. And this weekend you can find Sotack and bartender Catherine Manning upstairs working the new bar. In addition to the extra room, the Franklin will experiment with reservations upstairs at the end of July.

So, go celebrate four years with Franklin Mortgage and if you go on a weekend, check out what’s happening upstairs.

Cheap Eats: So Crepe

Posted by Alissa Falcone on June 17th, 2013

SoCrepe1

While studying abroad in Paris last fall, I got so used to buying and eating crepes that I experienced a reverse culture shock when I came back to Philly and could only find crepes in classy and expensive French restaurants. Thankfully, So Crepe opened about two months ago to fill both the void in my stomach as well as in the market for good, cheap crepes in Philly.

Cantillon and Dollar Dogs? Dom Brown Too?

Posted by Foobooz on June 5th, 2013

cantillon-high-gravity

Cantillon and dollar dogs. Today the Phillies play a day game so Kraftwork and Sidecar are doing their dollar dog promotion. And at Sidecar there is the added benefit that this is the first Wednesday of the month, which means it is High Gravity night (day). High Gravity usually means high alcohol beer but sometimes a rarity or two. That’s the case today as Cantillon Vigneronne will be pouring along with some badass high-octane beers like Dogfish Head Hellhound (10%) on My Ale and Struise Black Albert (13%).

Tonight: Rex 1516 Launches A New Happy Hour Program

Posted by Jason Sheehan on June 4th, 2013

rex-1516-full-room

Okay, so maybe the middle of Philly Beer Week isn’t the best time to try to roll out a new happy hour program, but you can’t knock Rex 1516 for trying.

Starting tonight, the southern-fried South Street joint is rolling out a new bar snacks/cocktail scheme calibrated for hot summer evenings in the city. I mean, Mardi Gras Mondays with $6 hurricanes? That ain’t bad. A $10 beer flight on Thursdays (with 3 8oz pours)? Also a nice distraction. But offering $5 Newbold IPA/Rittenhouse Rye citywides on Friday, Saturday and Sunday? Now THAT is something worth getting excited about.

So is the new menu. A bunch of snacks, all of ‘em five bucks. Check out the menu after the jump.
