Hammer of Glory Is Missing & Now Is Found

Posted by Foobooz on June 9th, 2013

hammer-alert

The Hammer of Glory has gone missing. The symbol of Philadelphia Beer Week, a nine pound, four-foot long, silver-topped sledgehammer is inscribed with the word “BEER” and answers to “HOG.” It was last seen on Frankford Avenue around 4:30 p.m. Saturday during the FestivaALE street party.

If you come in contact with the Hammer of Glory, please take it to the nearest bar participating in Philly Beer Week.

UPDATE: The Hammer of Glory has been found, reportedly under I-95. Mmmm, hmmm.

Philly Beer Week Concludes with a Great Beer Auction at City Tap House

Posted by Alex Tewfik on June 7th, 2013

citytaphouse

It’s the beginning of the end, and that bums us out. But just like the commencement ceremonies were fun, so will be the ending celebrations.

West Philly’s City Tap House will be hosting a Great Growler Auction this Sunday, June 9th, starting at 3 p.m. Growlers of Philly Beer Week’s most prized and rarest beers will be auctioned off, all of their proceeds benefitting the Ronald McDonald House.

General Manager/beer steward, Andy Farrell, has several great varieties lined up including:  Allagash FV-13Goose Island’s Sofie Paradis, and Bourbon County Coffee; and Firestone Walker Parabola. Oh, and other area bars, such as Iron AbbeyPennsylvania 6, and London Grill, are donating some growlers to the fundraiser as well.

If other bars want to get involved, email Farrell at afarrell@publichouseusa.com.

Serrano’s Exec Chef Heats Things Up With New Beer Menu

Posted by Tara Nurin on June 7th, 2013

SerranoSoftShell

Fresh off the announcement of her third appearance at COOK, on July 2, Serrano executive chef Gina Rodriguez is emphasizing beer in her new spring/summer menu–part of which was developed for Philly Beer Week. After launching a new seasonal menu and the restaurant’s first-ever cocktail list a few months ago, Rodriguez created the Staff Shot (Ketel One vodka and chilled fresh-squeezed OJ topped with Allagash White) and the Allagash White-battered soft-shelled Crab BLT with lemon aioli, basil, pepper and parmesan mayo (see above).

Tonight: The Industry Turns One

Posted by Foobooz on June 6th, 2013

industry-interior

The Industry turns one tonight and they’re celebrating with a Philly Beer Week event. They’ll be pouring all the special beers they’ve had on during beer week for $5. There will also be passed hors d’oeuvres. A party bus will also be running between the Industry and Good Dog Bar for people who have no idea where Pennsport is.

And it is all for a good cause with 20% of proceeds going to Pennsport based Edward O’Malley Athletic Association.

About Last Night: Open Stove Masters, Part 2

Posted by Jason Sheehan on June 6th, 2013

OS1411

So yes–unless you were one of the 20-some people in attendance at COOK last night, you once again missed out on witnessing the most insane two-and-a-half hours in all of professional cooking. More pressure than Top Chef, crazier than Iron Chef, and with WAY more drinking than in any cooking show on TV (unless you’re watching Martha Stewart), Open Stove Night is the absolute apex of the competitive cooking oeuvre. A moment where the best chefs in the city come together to turn breakfast cereals, beer, gummy bears, Twinkies, pickled green peppercorns, bacon powder, Doritos and SPAM into some of the most amazing dishes you have ever tasted in your life.

No, really. You have not really eaten until you have tasted the work of some exhausted, tequila-drunk sous chef who just barely got his version of Fruity Pebbles-crusted halibut with lychee salad and gummy-bear-thickened bechamel to the line as the last seconds were ticking off the clock, saving himself the shame and humiliation of having to do the “I Didn’t Cook Fast Enough” dance in front of a room of cheering food nerds.

Last night’s competitors were two winners from previous contests. Yehuda Sichel from Zahav took on Stephan Stryjewski of Sola BYOB in Bryn Mawr. And everything started out so nice, with a bread course (which was effing delicious on both sides), a plated amuse bouche, shots of Bacardi 151, and then a gentle appetizer course where all we asked was that they cook using the beautiful, fresh lychees we’d just picked up at the Asian market. We even gave them extra time, just so they’d both feel welcome in our little culinary Thunderdome.

And then we dropped the hammer. What came next was a panicked 40 minutes of flashing knives, tears and fire as the chefs were both forced to cook with multiple secret ingredients chosen for them by the audience. Secret ingredients like curry paste, Guinness, pickled peppercorns, Pocky and horseradish powder. We kept loading on the challenges until one team came out victorious. And for those of you who weren’t there, here’s what it looked like from the inside–as captured by COOK photo ninja and Friend of Foobooz, Yoni Nimrod.

It’s only the fifth day of Philly Beer Week and it seems the staff of the Foodery’s Pine street location are already in need of a break. Normally the staff picks at the Foodery are exquisite beers, today, they’re choosing recovery.

Cantillon and Dollar Dogs? Dom Brown Too?

Posted by Foobooz on June 5th, 2013

cantillon-high-gravity

Cantillon and dollar dogs. Today the Phillies play a day game so Kraftwork and Sidecar are doing their dollar dog promotion. And at Sidecar there is the added benefit that this is the first Wednesday of the month, which means it is High Gravity night (day). High Gravity usually means high alcohol beer but sometimes a rarity or two. That’s the case today as Cantillon Vigneronne will be pouring along with some badass high-octane beers like Dogfish Head Hellhound (10%) on My Ale and Struise Black Albert (13%).

The Real Deals of Center City Sips

Posted by Alex Tewfik on June 5th, 2013

center-city-sips-2013

It’s back, and it’s a lot to handle.

Center City Sips, much like Restaurant Week, is the worst and best thing for this city. Flocks of overzealous bar hoppers migrate through the city like locusts, drinking their way to oblivion, weighing themselves down with cheap food, most of which tastes like they’re priced. Yeah, it makes participating restaurants and bars a lot of money, and yeah, it’s good for getting business back from those saving money for beach weekends, but now your time between orders just got longer. So if you’re going to do it, do it right.

Tonight: Rex 1516 Launches A New Happy Hour Program

Posted by Jason Sheehan on June 4th, 2013

rex-1516-full-room

Okay, so maybe the middle of Philly Beer Week isn’t the best time to try to roll out a new happy hour program, but you can’t knock Rex 1516 for trying.

Starting tonight, the southern-fried South Street joint is rolling out a new bar snacks/cocktail scheme calibrated for hot summer evenings in the city. I mean, Mardi Gras Mondays with $6 hurricanes? That ain’t bad. A $10 beer flight on Thursdays (with 3 8oz pours)? Also a nice distraction. But offering $5 Newbold IPA/Rittenhouse Rye citywides on Friday, Saturday and Sunday? Now THAT is something worth getting excited about.

So is the new menu. A bunch of snacks, all of ‘em five bucks. Check out the menu after the jump.
