We here at Foobooz World Headquarters have a soft spot for soft shell crabs. Some might get bummed out by the thought of biting through a shell, devouring a whole animal and all that. But us, we love the idea of crabby taste without the hustle or frustration of shucking anything. And softshell season is officially upon us. The delicious creatures have been showing up on more menus around town over recent days.

Judging from the dinky white microwave perched prominently in the dining area, or the tables that look like rummage from an off-brand burger joint installed without a level, or the sign advising diners to clear out after an hour, Makkah Market seems like an unlikely gourmet destination. But if there’s a better lunch-and-specialty-market combo in West Philly, I don’t know about it.
Actually, lunch is just what I use it for. But it’s open 24 hours, so I could hit it up for an egg-and-cheese if I wanted. Or blackened tilapia at the dinner hour; the other afternoon I noticed a dozen whole fish sizzling on the griddle at once.

Eimer Design recently sent us a note that they are designing the forthcoming Good Stuff Eatery by Spike Mendelsohn. And that’s cool and all but what really struck our fancy was the Center City restaurant drawing they have on their site. It’s a 163-seat restaurant that is inspired by a classic 1920’s Americana diner.
What’s bothering us though is we don’t know where it is going or who is running it. And it is hard to sneak a 165-seat restaurant into town. Could it be the rumored PJ Clarke’s at Broad and Spruce? Perhaps a hotel-related project?
Have any guesses or inside information? Leave a note in the comments or annotate the image above.
