Valentine Date Idea: Love Stories and Pizza

Posted by Foobooz on February 7th, 2013

pizzas-in-riva - Photo by Danya Henninger

This Saturday, February 9th at 1 p.m. Laurel Hill Cemetary is hosting Til Death Do Us Part: The Love Stories of Laurel Hill, a walking tour inspired by a tory of a woman whose heart, and only her heart is buried in the cemetery. After hearing her and other love stories of the cemetery, head inside for a toasty fireside reception with wine, hot chocolate and hors d’oeuvres. The tour is a very reasonable $20, $18 for students and seniors.

Don’t fill up too completely, because next up is dinner at nearby In Riva. Cozy up and share some of the best pizza around and if there’s anything featuring buratta, order it. Chef Arthur Cavaliere offers our favorite version of that cheesy goodness around.

For more Valentine date ideas, check out the Foobooz Guide to Valentine’s Day.

10 Great Restaurants With Saturday Restaurant Week Menus And Reservations Still Available

Posted by Jason Sheehan on January 25th, 2013

amada-bar

It’s tough enough getting a table at a great restaurant on a Tuesday during Restaurant Week. But come Saturday night, when only half of the restaurants even have Restaurant Week deals in place and most of the best places have gone back to their regular menus for the weekend, it can be nearly impossible.

The operative word there being nearly. Here are 10 great restaurants in town that are both doing a Saturday Restaurant Week deal AND have seats available for those of you biologically incapable of planning ahead.

You’re welcome.

No reservations? No problem…

Philadelphia Restaurant Week: Planning A Killer Friday

Posted by Jason Sheehan on January 24th, 2013

10artsTagliatelle

Okay, folks. So we’re coming the end of stage one of Philadelphia Restaurant Week. For most places, Friday marks a brief respite before things pick up again on Sunday, and in celebration of that, we figured why not make a day of it tomorrow–hitting both a lunch and a dinner spot for the deals offered.

First stop? 10Arts, where chef Nathan Volz has been getting plenty of practice knocking out those plates of tagliatelle pomodoro with fresh mozzarella pictured above. He’s offering a creamy seafood chowder as one of the first-course lunch options (putting it up against a Honeycrisp apple salad), then the tagliatelle (which, when stacked up against a croque monsieur, is an easy choice), with either a carrot-hazelnut cake with carrot sauce and cream cheese sorbet or a pina colada sundae with rum gel and coconut foam as dessert.

Both of those sound weirdly compelling. Wonder what it’d cost me to double-up on dessert? And honestly, with the lunch price coming in at just $20, would it really matter?

But where should we go for dinner?

What To Eat During Center City Restaurant Week, Part 3: Chez Georges at Le Bec Fin

Posted by Jason Sheehan on January 17th, 2013

 le-bec-carousel

It’s that time again. Center City Restaurant Week is nearly upon us, and in order to help you, the loyal Foobooz readers, get the most bang for your buck, we’ve combed through all the menus being offered by the 100-plus restaurants participating this year and come up with a few ideal meals for you to consider. And today, we’ve got…

Chez Georges at Le Bec Fin: Back To The Future

$35 a head.

$35 a head to eat at Le Bec Fin.

Okay, so you’re not up on the main floor (Chez Georges is downstairs), but you still go in through the same door. You still stand in the same lobby. You’ll still be being fed by the same kitchen crew that’s serving the swells upstairs for 4 times the price. And the menu that’s being offered for Restaurant Week at Chez Georges is really a kind of throwback to the French classics that once made Le Bec one of the greatest restaurants in America.

Not bad for thirty-five bucks. Even if you do have to eat in the basement. So let’s see how to get the best out of this menu, shall we?

What To Eat During Center City Restaurant Week, Part 2: Zahav

Posted by Jason Sheehan on January 16th, 2013

Zahav Interior

It’s that time again. Center City Restaurant Week is nearly upon us, and in order to help you, the loyal Foobooz readers, get the most bang for your buck, we’ve combed through all the menus being offered by the 100-plus restaurants participating this year and come up with a few ideal meals for you to consider. And today, we’ve got…

Zahav: It Takes A Village

Okay, so I’m just saying make your reservations now, okay? We clear? Zahav is not the kind of place you’re going to just be able to walk into on any night during the next two weeks and expect to get anything but the stink-eye from the staff. The place is going to be busy, is what I’m saying. But there’s a reason for that. Of all the 100-some restaurants participating in this year’s Restaurant Week, Zahav is both one of the most popular and likely the one place that’s best prepared for being able to handle the onslaught coming their way.

Why? Because they handle serious crowds every single day. Also because the kitchen’s Restaurant Week menu is essentially identical to the menu they serve every other week. Like Barbuzzo yesterday, Zahav is offering four courses rather than the standard three (including one in which you’re offered two choices), and the list of options is large. If you’ve got plans at any point to go out with a group, Zahav is where you want to plant your team flag. Bring a party of four and, with a little sharing, you can eat virtually everything that’s great on the menu, all for $35 a head.

Let’s take a look at how the menu breaks down.

And today, we’re starting off with…

Barbuzzo: It Gets Better

Tables at Barbuzzo aren’t exactly easy gets during a normal week. And during Restaurant Week, things are going to be even tighter. But if you do manage to score some real estate while the special menu is in effect, there’s something you need to consider. While things here might appear to start off slow in the early courses, no one knows how to finish strong the way Barbuzzo does. So let’s take a look at the best approach to their Restaurant Week menu.

Six Pack: Mediterranean Food In Philadelphia

Posted by Foobooz on January 3rd, 2013

Editor’s Note: Once again, we have some new Foobooz interns to introduce to the community. And as we have done before, we’re letting them say hello by way of the classic Foobooz Six Pack–offering up a little taste of something they love in order to tell you who they are.

This week, we have Temple student Esther Katro–the girl with the weirdest lunchbox. Take it away, Esther…

I’m Esther Katro, I’m Greek, and I’ve been raised on–and consistently seek out–Mediterranean food. I’ve always been the girl at school with the most  diverse lunchbox, consisting of various Mediterranean foods with funny names, scents and textures. As a multimedia journalism student at Temple University, I believe in bringing virtual color and dimension to food through video.

Philadelphia is a Greek word, and the city has a strong Greek architectural influence and a heavy dose of Mediterranean food on the scene. So check out any of these great restaurants for a filling meal guaranteed to be cooked with a ton of olive oil.
