Boozing At The Barnes: Would You Like A Glass Of Chili Pepper And Gin With Your Matisse?

Posted by Tara Nurin on May 18th, 2012

If you’re going to be attending any of the Barnes Foundation’s opening festivities (or just popping in for a look in the next say, five years), be sure to stop into the Garden Restaurant for a cocktail. Senior executive chef Andrew Perekupka (of 1st & Fresh Catering, a division of ARAMARK), has concocted a drink list to rival the top cocktail bars in the city.

Best of Philly Voting Ends Monday, P&K Giving Away Burgers Today

Posted by Foobooz on May 18th, 2012

Best of Philly voting ends this Monday morning and Pub & Kitchen is trying to get a late run going in the vote for Best of Philly burger.

The Graduate Hospital gastropub is giving away 400 Churchill sliders starting today at 4 p.m. Will it be enough to win a tough battle? Only time will tell.

Best Of Philly: This Is What A Sandwich Tasting Should Look Like

Posted by Jason Sheehan on May 18th, 2012

There is something to be said for presentation. And for preparedness. Yesterday, we were fortunate enough to receive a sandwich delivery from Shank’s (for yet another in our long string of Best Of Philly tastings), and when it showed up, not only was it generous enough to feed most of the edit staff (and kind to the vegetarians working in divisions other than Foobooz World HQ, with a loaded platter of eqqplant hoagies), but everything came labeled, laid out and with plates, napkins, silverware and a delightful antipasti tray. Each sandwich was even marked with whether or not it was coming on a seeded roll.

What came inside the pretty wrappings was pretty good, too. The chicken cutlet with roasted red peppers and provolone was overwhelmed somewhat by the peppers (and I’ll take hot over roasted red bells any day), but the other chicken cutlet variety with broccoli rabe and cheese was excellent. It was good enough to remind me that, among other things, Philadelphia is a city that has made me fall in love with broccoli rabe all over again.

So thanks, Shank’s! And way to plan ahead.

Doobies Gets a Sign

Posted by Foobooz on May 18th, 2012

The much loved Doobies bar at 22nd and Lombard hasn’t had a sign for as long as we can remember (though the building apparently did in 1964). But this morning we spotted this sparkling beauty shining in the morning sun.

Organic Cocktails at Isabella

Posted by Tara Nurin on May 18th, 2012

Taking its cues from city spots like Positano Coast and Fare, Conshohocken’s Isabella is going green in its glasses. Mixologists are introducing a menu of seasonal organic cocktails designed to “bring the same respect for seasonal and organic fruits and vegetables to the bar as chef Michael Cappon brings to his menu.”

For $13 or less, you can quaff a Rhubarb Mojito, a Cucumber-Lime gin refresher, a Smoked Cherry Cosmo with house-smoked organic cherries, or a Peach Margarita. Each of these drinks features organic alcohol and some (but not all) organic ingredients.

Professional Food Writer/Tie Wearer John Mariani Coming To Davio’s

Posted by Tara Nurin on May 18th, 2012

John Mariani wears a tie and jacket when he goes to dinner. Every dinner. The restaurant columnist for Esquire is a one-man barricade against the onslaught of informality in 21st century dining.

Case in point: When I met him at a media conference in Pittsburgh in 2009, he told me he was planning a trip to Philly to review several restaurants for his annual 20 Best New Restaurants feature. He invited me, then an aspiring food writer, to meet him not by way of the usual “Do you want to join me?” but instead, “Would you care to dine with me?” It’s perhaps the most regal question I’ve ever answered yes to.

We had dinner at the defunct Maia in Villanova (thumbs down) then lunched the following day at Table 31, where Georges hugged him warmly and gave us a tour through the kitchen. It’s a good thing Georges left before our waiter carelessly poured red wine into a glass that was already 1/3 full of white, or Philadelphia might have witnessed its first public execution in modern history. Neither Maia nor Table 31 made the list that year but Zahav and Distrito, where he “dined” after we bid adieu, did.
