Six Pack: Sunday Tasting Menus

Posted by Alex Tewfik on May 17th, 2013

vintage-family-dinner-e1283721457662

There’s the glitz and the glam, and then there’s the humble and the honest-to-goodness, the unaffected and the unassuming. To each his own, but I prefer the latter.

I get a kick out of the quirky buildings’ awkward seating arrangements and tiny menus—menus that need not say much, and food that says all too much; the chef-driven and food-focused holes, often orienting themselves in such a way that the preparer and prepared are shown off, experienced only through an intimate three-part channel between the chef, his food, and his guest. When done well, the following few weeks (or longer) will pale in comparison. That’s why the tasting menu is so important; it’s a facilitation of exchange between the hand of the cook and the consumed palate it feeds.

Some tasting menus you’ll find in places that don’t deserve them, and others are just a second menu to the main. Some are only available on weekdays, but there are those you can only take part in on a single day: Sunday, perhaps.

Because seriously? To anyone else, this would basically be the start of a very weird horror movie.

The Cambridge on South Street will be hosting a spring pig roast on Sunday, May 19, in their outdoor courtyard. The event gets underway at 5 p.m. with suckling roasted pig and sides like farro salad and homemade cornbread and a nice Victory Summer Love draft for only $18.

The Cambridge will also have  a few spring and summer draft favorites for $5, like 21st Amendment Hell or High Watermelon, Ithaca Apricot Wheat, Blue Point Spring Fling, Port Brewing Summer Pale Ake, Troegg’s and Sunshine Pils. Nothing can welcome spring quite like pig, beer, and blues, and you can get it all at The Cambridge this Sunday.

The doors are closing

Michael Klein is reporting that Le Bec Fin will “retire” this June. Replacing the French icon will be a new restaurant serving “progressive American cuisine” and run by chef Justin Bogle, who is returning to Philadelphia after running the kitchen at New York’s Gilt.

Chris Scarduzio, who was Georges Perrier’s partner at several restaurants will be the new restaurant’s director of operations. Nicolas Fanucci who has been identified as the owner of Le Bec Fin has indeed recently departed and won’t be involved in the running of the new restaurant.

Current chef Steve Eckerd will land on his feet. Klein reports that the chef and his partners have landed the Mainland Inn in Montgomery County.

Louisiana Boil Tonight at Cedar Point Bar and Kitchen

Posted by Sam Bloch on May 16th, 2013

Every Thursday night at Fishtown’s Cedar Point Bar and Kitchen, chef Shannon Dougherty cooks up a “Louisiana Boil.”  The boil can contain anything from crawfish to mussels to crabs to shrimp and is usually served with andouille sausage, potatoes, corn on the cob, or French bread for just $15.

Cedar Point also has some great happy hours specials from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. to 12 a.m. on Thursdays so you can enjoy a refreshing drink with your boil. Tonight, Dougherty is tossing shrimp and crawfish into the boil. If you can’t make it tonight, have no fear as this boil is turning into a Thursday tradition at the new Fishtown spot.

First Bite: Luke’s Lobster

Posted by Jason Sheehan on May 16th, 2013

LukesSign

The Thursday that sign is referring to is today. And noon was already two hours ago. So if you’re not at Luke’s Lobster right now, stuffing your face full of lobster rolls, what’s your excuse?

Mine is that I dropped in last night on the soft open/preview and that I’m still kinda stuffed–mostly because, at a certain point, I just gave up on the dining room and started hanging out by the pass rail of the open kitchen, grabbing half-rolls off the trays as fast as the cooks could lay them down. Waiting my proper turn? That’s for suckers. Especially when I’ve already been waiting so long for a lobster roll done right and served for a price that doesn’t immediately put it in the realm of the only-if-someone-else-is-paying expense account lunch.

Saint Declan’s Well in Ireland

The Left Bank apartment building on the Walnut Street bridge in University City is losing Tria Wine Room this week. But it looks like it will be getting Saint Declan’s Well. Billed as an Irish-American pub and restaurant, Saint Declan’s won’t replace Tria but rather Trophy Bikes, which has moved on to Northern Liberties.

No further details are available right now. We’ll keep you up to date though.

Thirty-Five Year Old Sassafras Celebrates Five Year Anniversary

Posted by Sam Bloch on May 16th, 2013

VUNjUULs

It has been five years since Donal McCoy and Neil Laughlin purchased Old City bar institution Sassafras, and the restaurant is celebrating with a party today, Thursday, May 16. The festivities get under way at 5 p.m. with five dollar food and drink specials, like hibiscus mojitos and beer battered fish bites. The party really gets going at 6 p.m. when Philadelphia rocker Kenn Kweder takes the stage. This should be a fun celebration worth checking out at one of Philly’s classic bars.
