Closings is Foobooz’s list of restaurants, bars and clubs that have come and gone from Philadelphia’s dining scene. We remember you fondly.

- Le Bec-Fin – Georges Perrier’s Le Bec-Fin is calling it quits after an exalted 42-year run. Next up for Perrier is a vacation. Next up for Le Bec-Fin is Nicolas Fanucci, a former Le Bec general manager and recent GM at the esteemed French Laundry.
February 2012
- B.B. Gone – The fusion rice spot gave way to Nom Nom Ramen.
- Little Bar - The 8th and 8th and Fitzwater bar closed amid much “ickyness.”
- Mahogany – The Walnut Street cigar bar closes after 15 years.
- MidAtlantic - Daniel Stern’s University City spot never quite found its groove in the two years it was open.
- Tritone - The longtime South Street music venue has been sold and will become the Cambridge.
January 2012
- Arrow Swim Club – The Bart Blatstein/Nicole Cashman alliance lasted just one season. Now Brian Nagele will take a shot at running a swim club.
- Chenango – The Arrow Swim Club’s restaurant also lasted just one season. Next up is Yellow Fin Grill.
- Delicatessen – The Chestnut Street deli shuttered after a two year run.
- DeLorenzo’s - Trenton’s famed pizza spot to close after 65 years.
- Gaja Gaja – Japanese/Korean spot on South Street did make it four years.
- Rx – Rx had a good run in West Philadelphia but bowed out after ten plus years.
- Snow White Diner – The 19th and Chestnut greasy spoon will be missed.
December 2011
- Fish - Mike Stollenwerk’s seafood restaurant closed on Lombard Street to make way for Fish at 13th and Locust.
- Lafayette Grill – The BYOB never seemed crowded on the western end of Northern Liberties.
- Marathon – The Marathon locations at 10th and Walnut and 13th and Chestnut are goners.
- Pho 75 – The Chinatown location of the chain closed, next in is Nan Zho.
- Raw at the Piazza - Raw as originally imagined has closed at the Piazza. Will it come back as a different nightlife-centric venue?
- Rick’s Steaks – The Liberty Place version of Rick’s closed on the last day of the year.
- Ted’s Montana Grill – Ted Turner’s mega restaurant closed after seven years at Broad and Spruce.
November 2011
- Fathom Seafood House – Mike Stollenwerk sold his seafood bar to co-owner Rob Holloway, it is now East Girard Gastropub (EGG).
- Konak – The Old City Turkish restaurant closed after an eight year run.
- Public House Wilmington – The Delaware branch of the local chain closed after business on the night before Thanksgiving.
- Swanky Bubbles – The Old City bar’s appearance on Bar Rescues wasn’t enough to save it.
- Tbar – The 12th Street tea shop closed it’s brick and mortar location. The business is now all online as a tea retailer.
October 2011
- L’Oca – The sign said it all, “L’Oca is closed forever.”
- Philly Diner – The diner’s closing shocked UPenn’s campus.
September 2011
- Adsum – The buzzed about restaurant closed to become Tapestry, a more accessible gastropub.
- Argan Moroccan Cuisine - The subterranean Moroccan restaurant quietly called it quits.
- Brown Betty Dessert Boutique – It was decided that the Liberty Place Brown Betty was enough and the 20th Street location closed.
- Latin Farmer – The food truck wasn’t around long. It “took a break” in September and shortly afterwards it was put up for sale.
- Trattoria Alla Costiera – The Italian BYOB closed and another Italian BYOB, Ulivo has moved in.
August 2011
- Jake’s Custard Stand – The Paoli spot closed after just a short run.
- Noble Cookery – The well liked Sansom Street restaurant closed to make way for Il Pittore.
- Pale Horse – The West Chester gastropub closed suddenly.
- Paradigm - The Old City veteran closed and is now an Italian restaurant.
- Portofino - The long-serving Italian restaurant closed “for renovations.” It is now the Walnut Street Supper Club.
- Biba – Tria’s little cousin in University City was rebranded with the Tria name in August.
July 2011
- Catelli – Voorhees Italian restaurant retires. Chef Lou Imbesi is looking to open a more casual spot at the Voorhees Town Center.
- Ernesto’s 1521 Cafe – The Spruce Street Italian restaurant is calling it quits after 19 years.
- Far From Home Cafe – Bigger ambitions have shuttered our favorite empanada food truck.
- Gardenia – The lovely but under appreciated restaurant at the Art Alliance has closed.
- Horizons – The much-praised vegan restaurant is making way for a much-praised pizzeria. Closing anticipated for around July 4th.
- Illuminaire – The longtime Fairmount bar and restaurant is done.
- Philadelphia Belle – The paddlewheeler is dead in the water in under one year.
- Renaissance Sausage – Renaissance Sausage Truck is going off the road. The sausage will live on in retail.
June 2011
- Almanac Market – The Northern Liberties market goes out attacking its lack of support.
- Avril – Husband and wife BYO in Narberth ends it after two years..
- Kokopelli – The Southwestern tequila bar and restaurant has gone purely club.
- Pastoral Korean – The 13th Street Korean spot now sports a For Rent sign.
- Tweed – Edward Bianchini cleared the place out and closed for good. Much to the surprise of the landlord.
May 2011
- Artisserie Chocolate Cafe – The 18th Street successor to Naked Chocolate didn’t survive more than a week after the original Naked Chocolate Cafe closed.
- Harry G Ochs – Reading Terminal institution exits amid lawsuits after 105 years.
- Haru – The Japanese and sushi spot in Old City closes after six years.
- Hoof + Fin – Queen Village Argentinian BYOB will close before the end of May.
- Italian Bistro – Broad Street’s Italian Bistro will become a cafe for University of the Arts students.
- James – Highly regarded Bella Vista restaurant shuts down. We wait to see what’s next for chef/owner Jim Burke.
- Marathon Grill – The 40th Street location of the mini-chain couldn’t agree to a new lease.
- Marrakesh Express – West Moroccan quick serve in West Philadelphia closes.
- Naked Chocolate Cafe – The delicious chocolatier closes on Walnut Street.
- Tuscany Cafe – The longtime Rittenhouse Square coffee shop has closed at 19th and Locust.
April 2011
- Arbol Cafe – The Northern Liberties spot closed and sold off all its equipment via Craigslist.
- Charlie’s Pub – The Old City pub bowed out with one last blowout night.
- Fork & Barrel – The East Falls beer bar was vacated without warning leaving to the landlord to file suit.
- MangoMoon – The Manayunk Thai restaurant closed to make way for a new concept.
- Unitea – West Philadelphia spot lasted less than a year on 44th Street.
- Warsaw Cafe – The 31-year old Eastern European restaurant closed for good in April.
March 2011
- Crocodile – The Old City bar with the free pizza gimmick couldn’t hang on.
- Jolly’s Dueling Pianos – The piano bar left its 20th and Chestnut location for the greener pastures of the Academy House.
February 2011
- Center City Grille – The revolving door of concepts at 20th and Ludlow makes way for Xchange Bar.
- Flying Monkey Deuce – The Locust Street patisserie closes shop on Feb. 1.
- Jerry’s Bar – Northern Liberties diviest dive bar closes.
- Los Jalapenos – South Philadelphia favorite closes its doors at the end of February. Its sibling Tres Jalapenos lives on.
- Snackbar – Jonathan Makar is closing his tiny Rittenhouse spot to focus on his flowers business.
- Society Hill Hotel – The chillest spot in Old City closed down its restaurant/bar and hotel.
January 2011
- 401 Diner – Conshohocken diner goes from 24-hours to zero hours.
- Arsenal – Delaware restaurant sold off all its furnishings and closed.
- Bocelli – Chestnut Hill restaurant gives way to Stella Sera.
- Crawdaddy’s – The West Chester restaurant makes way for Toast Tavern.
- Kavei – The pho spot on Oregon Avenue has become Ha Saigon.
- Pace One – Concordville fave met its maker.
- Simon Pearce – West Chester area gift shop and restaurant closes.
- Solaris Grille – It was a bad month for Chestnut Hill as Solaris Grille’s 15-year run came to an end.
December 2010
- Black Angus – South Street restaurant closes its doors.
- Hasu – 1326 Spruce Street goes through restaurants
- Spaghetti Warehouse – 20 year run on Spring Garden comes to an end.
- Swift Half – The Good Dog sibling bowed out after a year and a half at Bart Blatstein’s Piazza at Schmidt’s.
- T.A. Flannery’s – Old school bar at 21st and Ludlow has called it a career.
- Vesuvio – The Bella Vista bar is at least closed for renovations.
November 2010
- Khyber – The Old City institution has ended live music. Now it’s the Khyber Pass Pub with a focus on Southern food and good beer.
- Marketplace at East Falls – The indoor market has closed its doors.
October 2010
- APO Bar + Lounge – The fine cocktail trailblazer goes one ice.
- Denim – The Walnut Street club quietly gave way to Wisper.
- Falafel Factory – The quick-serve falafel spot couldn’t make it a year.
- Meredith’s – The Berwyn spot has become Aneu, a bistro and wine bar.
- Ron’s Ribs – The South Street BBQ spot is closed for renovations.
- Ro-Zu – There was always something a bit off about this well received sushi spot.
September 2010
- Kildares – The King of Prussia Irish bar is out.
- Leila Cafe – The popular restaurant is moving from its 13th and Pine corner to South Street.
- Muntin – It wasn’t there long enough to establish an identity. Now it’s Hasu.
- O Sandwiches – The 9th Street banh mi spot has shuttered.
- PJ Henry’s – The Ardmore bar has become Cantina Diablo.
- Privé – The once hot Old City bi-level is going sushi.
- Sam’s Grill – The Jenkintown restaurant from Susan Schlisman has left us.
- Texas-Wieners – The Collingswood hot dog spot is making way for the Kitchen Consigliere.
August 2010
- Artful Dodger – The longtime Society Hill bar closed suddenly with the locks changed.
- Bobby Chez – The crab cake emporium blames Philadelphia’s business environment for its demise.
- Hot Potato Cafe – Gordon Ramsay couldn’t save the Fishtown potato restaurant.
- Nicholas – The Pennsport restaurant has succumbed after a vacation.
- NoVi – The Hamilton Street bar and restaurant has made way for Philly Pub n’ Grub.
- Pour House – The East Falls tavern is calling it quits after 5-years on Ridge.
- Shundeez – Chestnut Hill’s Perisian restaurant at the top of the Hill has closed.
- Sonsie – The Atlantic City  restaurant on the Pier at Caesar’s is “closed for renovations.”
- Thomas’ – The better Main Street bar has made way for The Workhorse.
July 2010
- Bebe’s Barbecue – The 9th Street barbecue storefront is at least closed for the summer.
- Cafe Spice – The 10-year old Indian veteran of Old City ceased operations.
- Darlings Coffee Shop – The original Darling’s has closed at 20th and Pine.
- Headhouse – The gastropub closed after just about a month when the chef left.
- Kingyo – The Japanese restaurant at 1720 Sansom went quietly.
- Kong – The sleek Hong Kong street-food restaurant never really hit its stride.
- Roy’s – The Hawaiian themed chain has closed at 15th and Sansom. A new concept is expected by winter.
June 2010
- Bistro Americana – The corner location wasn’t enough to save this Collingswood BYOB. Up next is That’s Amore.
- Cacia’s Bakery – The Northern Liberties bakery did not renew its lease.
- Domenico’s – Blue Bell branch of Ventnor classic only lasted 7-months.
- Floret – It was only a handful of months for this Main Line restaurant.
- JR’s Lounge – The former Camac Martini Lounge couldn’t make a go of it at this Locust Street location.
- King George II – The restaurant on the banks of the Delaware in Bristol lost out to the economy.
- Naked Chocolate Cafe – Two locations have closed and are being re-conceptualized as Artiserrie Cafes.
- Saute – The Front Street restaurant has closed and will be re-born Catahoula.
- Tequila Joe’s – Center Square restaurant closed in spot that also didn’t work as Solaris Grille.
May 2010
- Chew Man Chu – The Avenue of the Arts restaurant lasted just 6-months.
- Demetris – West Philadelphia restaurant has closed after less than 6 months.
- Drafting-Room – The Spring House incarnation has closed among rumors of bigger problems.
- Jasper John’s – Bad luck and bad timing did in this Downingtown restaurant.
- Jimmy Johns – The West Chester institution fell to fire just a day short of its 70th anniversary.
- Patou – The Old City French spot lasted six years, though it was on the market for some time.
- Ro-Zu – The well received Japanese restaurant lasted less than two months.* It’s back but with a new chef.
- Swanky-Bubbles – The Cherry Hill outpost of this Old City lounge is done.
- Thoreau – The vegetarian restaurant on Spring Garden where Root was didn’t have any better of a fate.
April 2010
- City Grange – The restaurant with the ambitious press releases is now City Bar & Grill.
- Little Fish – Structural problems have caused Mike Stollenwerk’s restaurant to close.
- Ortlieb’s Jazzhaus – The longstanding jazz club closed after 23-years.
- Sly Fox Brewery – The Sly Fox Phoenixville location moved across Route 113.
- Twenty Manning – Audrey Claire Taichman’s Twenty Manning gave way to Twenty Manning Grill, a more neighborhoody establishment.
March 2010
- Alison Two – Alison Barshak’s remaining restaurant followed Alison at Blue Bell into the past tense.
- Skinner’s Pub – The Old City oasis has been bought by Always Sunny in Philadelphia stars Rob McElhenney and Kaitlin Olson and will become Mac’s Tavern.
February 2010
- Dr. Watson’s – The 11th Street bar is being sold and transformed into Sherlock’s Tavern, an English-style pub.
- Maru – This short-lived replacement for Anjou only lasted a month.
- Mélange Café – The Cherry Hill location has closed.
January 2010
- Chickpeas – The South Street falafel store has closed at 630 South Street.
- Fellini Cafe – Paoli restaurant has declared bankruptcy.
- Genuine Bread & Specialty Shop - West Philadelphia home cooking spot is closed and is selling its equipment.
- Pink Rose Pastry Shop – The 4th and Bainbridge bakery had been open since 1985.
- Michael’s Cafe – East Passyunk Ave storefront closed on Jan. 10.
- Misso – The well liked but rarely busy Misso closed at 1326 Spruce Street. The space has since reopened as Muntin.
- Shinju - Locust Street sushi spot is closing and moving to Walnut where it will be known as Fat Salmon.
- Vino – The Piazza wine bar has ceded to Apollinare.
- Word of Mouth – The casual Collingswood eatery has shuttered.
December 2009
- Ava - The Italian BYOB is the latest 3rd Street casualty.
- Kibitz in the City – The deli will be replaced by another deli.
- La Bonne Auberge – It was the knees of Gerard Caronello that did in this New Hope restaurant.
- Mezza Luna – After moving down the block Mezza Luna has checked out.
Novemeber 2009
- Alison at Blue Bell – Alison Barshak closed her BYOB location to focus solely on Alison two.
- Johnny’s New Orleans Pizza Kitchen – John Mims has closed up the pizza operation, expanding his Daddy Mims.
- Kitchen 233 – The PJ Whelihan’s brand turned into Treno Pizza Bar.
- Pond – The Radnor French bistro closed to make way for Floret.
- Vino – The Piazza at Schmidt’s wine bar didn’t close but the original management team is out.
- Zot – The spacious Belgian bar and restaurant on Lombard closed for good in November.
October 2009
- Alphabet Soup – After a brief comeback the Audubon BYOB closed for good so owner Jayson Grossberg could spend more time with his family.
- Blue Horse – The Blue Bell restaurant closed after five and half years.
- Bonte – The 1315 Walnut Location of Bonte closed.
- Coquette – The French bistro at the cursed corner of 5th and Bainbridge has claimed another restaurant.
- Pond – The Radnor French bistro closed to make way for Floret.
September 2009
- DuJour Market – The Broad and Pine location of DuJour closed to make way for Chew Man Chu.
- Gayle – Daniel Stern closed his Queen Village bistro as he prepared for the opening of MidAtlantic and R2L.
- Kristian’s – Kristian Leuzzi closed his 11th and Federal Italian restaurant after 11 years.
- Ly Michael’s – The Vietnamese restaurant became Tazia, a more pan-Asian concept.
- Paloma – The French-Mexican spot in the Oxford Circle section of the city closed just short of 10 years.
- Piano Bar – Formerly Cascamorto, the 20th and Arch Street piano bar played itself out in September.
- Soul – The Creole BYOB on Germantown Ave lasted just 8 months.
- Tavern on Broad – JL Sullivan’s reconceptualized into Tavern on Broad.
August 2009
- Bertolini’s – The Morton’s owned Italian restaurant at the KoP mall has closed.
- Blush – Nick Farina and much have Blush’s staff have moved on to Verdad.
- Carambola - Dresher’s noted restaurant has passed on and is being replaced by a branch of Jenkintown’s West Avenue Grille.
- Goodburger – The New York import never really caught on here. It’ll be most remembered for its relentless dance music.
- Loie – The rittenhouse spot yielded to Zama.
- Marigold Kitchen – Marigold has been sold. There will be a big dinner with past chefs on August 1st.
- Remedy Tea Bar – Landlord difficulties are to blame for this Sansom Street spot’s demise.
- Tangerine – Stephen Starr’s Market Street spot is closed pending a new concept.
July 2009
- Ansill Food+Wine – Foodies took it hard when David Ansill’s self-named restaurant closed.
- Carmine’s – The creole spot ended its run in Bryn Mawr and is now Verdad.
- Margot – The Narberth BYOB has since been replaced with Gemelli.
- Oceanaire – The opulent ocean liner themed seafood restaurant has been sunk by the economy.
- Pearl & Akoya – First it was Akoya closing but shortly thereafter it was curtains for Pearl.
- Shouk – The Middle Eastern lounge at 6th and Bainbridge has been slapped with a Cease Operations placard.
- Taquet – The Wayne Hotel’s upscale restaurant will not return from renovations.
- Vincent’s – West Chester jazz and blues club is shuttered.
June 2009
- Bar Amalfi – Al Paris short lived wine bar is being reconcepted.
- Copper Bistro – The Northern Liberties BYOB has called it quits.
- MarBar – The Marathon bar has been rebranded Panda Bar.
- Merl’s – Despite a nice review in City Paper Merl’s has closed.
- Pat Bombino’s – The South Philly Italian has closed its kitchen and is open only as a bar.
- Strongbox – The luxe lounge didn’t last long.
- Susanna Foo – has closed its space on Walnut Street. The Radnor dumpling house remains.
May 2009
- Bish Bish Cafe – The shortlived Middle Eastern spot only lasted a couple of months.
- Lynda’s Mediterranean – The Passyunk Avenue spot opened but for just a split second. Now it’s closed again.
- Siam Lotus – Craig LaBan’s favorite Thai restaurant has shuttered on Spring Garden.
- Swallow – The writing had been on the wall for awhile. The NoLibs mac and cheese restaurant is gone.
April 2009
- Frederick’s – Long time Queen Village spot that no one we ever met had been to, finally closed.
- Get Happy – Dave Magrogan and Get Happy weren’t happy about the liquor license situation. Now Get Happy is closed.
- Javier – Haddonfield spot couldn’t overcome internal problems or the economy.
- Les Bons Temps – The good times never got rolling for this New Orleans restaurant.
- Maia – The super concept in Villanova didn’t quite make it a full year.
- Melting Pot – Chestnut Hill’s fondue fixture flamed out.
- Passage to India – The Walnut and Juniper Indian restaurant makes way for an IHOP.
- Philadelphia Fish & Company – The concept has gone as ownership has reshaped the longtime Chestnut Street spot into Q BBQ & Tequila Bar.
- Savona – the Gulph Mills’ restaurant closed for reservations in April.
- Shank’s & Evelyn’s has closed their South Philadelphia landmark. But hopefully we’ll see them soon in Center City.
- Tiedhouse – The Fairmount area gastropub will probably be most remembered for owner Chris Leonard’s guns blazing goodbye.
March 2009
- North by Northwest – Shut down by L&I they reopened in June.
- Old Original Bookbinders – Bookbinders closed suddenly, sighting mechanical problems. Bankruptcy must be a mechanical problem.
- Paxia – The windows are papered over and the lights are out over the South Philadelphia Mexican.
February 2009
- Cresheim Cottage Cafe – The Mt. Airy spot was done in by Germantown Avenue construction and the economy.
- Mantra – Al Paris dropped his pan-Asian pub and rechristened the spot Bar Amalfi.
- Genji - The long time Center City spot gave way to Kin Gyo.
- Aoi on Walnut Street closed to become Aki.
- Boathouse Row Bar – The bar inside the Rittenhouse Hotel has closed down.
- Chef’s Market - Long running gourmet on Market has closed its storefront. The catering business remains.
- Cosi, 2nd and Lombard – The Society Hill location of the local chain shut its doors.
- Majolica - The Phoenixville BYO had shut its doors but now it is coming back with the same name but more affordable menu.
- Charlie Brown’s – The Swedesford Rd restaurant has closed.
January 2009
- Kildare’s – Kildare’s South Street leaves its corporate overlord to become Get Happy.
- Miami Cafe – Plantain flat breads with chorizo sounded so much better than what was delivered.
- Monkey Bar – The luxe lounge on Walnut is closing to be reconceptualized as Strongbox.
- Ong’s – Chinatown’s Ong’s has gone the way of the dodo.
December 2008
- Brasserie Perrier – In the shocker of the year, George Perrier’s Le Bec-Fin sibling closed after 11 years as a Walnut Street fixture.
- Glam - Wham, bam goodbye Glam. Glam’s being replaced by the less sexy Ugly Mug.
- Rae – Daniel Stern’s big restaurant at 30th Street Station is moving to Liberty Place II but it’s closed until at least Labor Day.
- Root – The local food restaurant lasted just 4 months at 1033 Spring Garden Street.
November 2008
- Sushi On the Square – The casual sushi joint at 20th and Locust has shut down and is becoming a FroYo emporium.
October 2008
- Aspen – The Fairmount neighborhood bar and restaurant was shut down abruptly in October and still hasn’t opened.
- Rick’s Steaks – The embattled cheesesteak spot bowed out of the Reading Terminal Market at the end of October.
- Sovalo – The well liked Italian restaurant on 2nd Street in Northern Liberties saw business slip and closed up shop.
September 2008
- Django – Ross Essner shutters the former 4-bell restaurant just off of South Street.
- Ecco Qui – The University City pizza and wine spot has been closed and reborn as Mikey’s American Grill and Sports Bar.
August 2008
- Barristers – The Rittenhouse sports bar has been taken over by Cavanaugh’s forces. The interior remains largely the same.
July 2008
- Pita Pocket – The closing of the 16th and Chancellor spot has cost us some of our favorite chicken shawarma but on the good side, Mi Lah Vegetarian has come in to excellent reviews.
- Melograno – Forced out of their 22nd and Spruce location, Melograno did resurface to a quaint spot at 20th and Sansom.
June 2008
- Azure – The blow of losing a neighborhood staple like Azure had to be softened somewhat by the arrival of Dos Segundos.
- Chaucer’s Tabard Inn – The neighborhood corner bar at 20th and Lombard closed after a long run. Pub & Kitchen took over in the fall and looks set for its own long run.
- Kujaku – If you blinked you may have missed this pan-Asian spot that was on the Parkway.
- Sansom Street Oyster House – The Sansom Street institution closed as owner Carry Neff filed for bankruptcy protection. But there may be a future as the former owner’s son is interested in reopening the spot.
- Sonam – The South Street restaurant made a go of it in one might be another restaurant blackhole.
- Striped Bass – Stephen Starr closed Striped Bass at the end of June to make way for his steak and chops spot, Butcher & Singer.
- Twenty21 – The big restaurant at the base of Commerce Square called it quits in late June.
May 2008
- Clementine’s Bistro – The Passyunk eatery got good reviews but only lasted a year.
- Kaizan – We wonder why restaurants keep trying to make the Academy House work. Kaizan only lasted 6 months.
- Overtures – The long time South Street respite from South Street sailed into the past tense in May.
April 2008
- 707 – After one year and “concept debacles” 707 closed. Less than a year later Chifa will take the space.
- Cafe Gelato – The 6th and Chestnut gelato spot never seemed to catch on like Capogiro.
- Deuce – The Liberties Walk bar and restaurant went through a ton of chefs in its short existance. Now it is El Camino Real.
- Hamlet Bistro – The quaint Mt. Airy restaurant closed up at the end of April.
- Wawa – The end of April saw the closing of the 2nd Center City Wawa as the 20th and Chestnut Street location closed.
March 2008
- La Creole Cafe – The always mysterious La Creole shuttered in May. We’re still waiting for the Creole replacement.
February 2008
- Grape Street Pub – Manyunk’s live music venue closed to make way for a Mad River.
