UPDATED Aspiring Chefs: Get Trained By Vetri, Solomonov, Perrier and More

Posted by Jason Sheehan on October 8th, 2012

UPDATE: Unsurprisingly, we’ve already been getting questions from folks about this new program. One of the big ones? How much is it going to cost. I can now tell you that we just heard from COOK and they have decided that the 10 students chosen for the 1st semester of the COOK Masters Program will be going FOR FREE. Yup, you read it right: 20 hours of instruction by the city’s best chefs, and it ain’t gonna cost you a penny.

This is going to be huge.

No, seriously. For all of you cooks out there–for all of you apprentices, stagiers, externs, students and passionate amateurs, all of you up-and-comers, all of you line dogs aspiring for something more, all of you broke-ass, bone-tired, hard-working, up-by-your-bootstraps white jackets banging out 200 tables a night and reading cookbooks on the dock between dinner hits… Man, do I have some news for you.

Right now, as we speak, we here at Foobooz and the team at COOK are making plans for the first semester of the COOK Masters Program: A straight-up professional cooking school designed to give 10 lucky students the experience of a lifetime as they are personally trained by some of Philadelphia’s best and most successful chefs. Here’s the pitch:

After just one year and over five hundred cooking classes, COOK, Philadelphia’s premier demonstration kitchen, begins a new chapter with The COOK Masters Program: an instructional cooking series taught by some of the city’s and country’s biggest culinary names, for students who are truly passionate about pursuing a professional career in the restaurant industry.

And just wait until you hear who the instructors are going to be…

Talula’s Garden Expanding With Talula’s Daily

Posted by Jason Sheehan on September 25th, 2012

So this is one of those weird things… It feels like it has been forever since we’ve written anything about Talula’s Garden, the Aimee Olexy / Stephen Starr project over on Washington Square that got one of Philly mag’s highest rankings ever when Trey Popp reviewed it back in August of last year. And when we were writing about it with some regularity, it was all because of the revolving door Olexy seemed to have installed in the kitchen–running through three exec’s in four months.

But then things cooled out, the kitchen righted itself and, suddenly, there was nothing more to say. We knew the place was good. We knew everything was ticking along smoothly. And no one really wants to read a post entitled “Everything At Talula’s Garden is Just Swell.”

We knew that what it would really take to get Talula’s Garden back onto the radar was some kind of big news. Something huge happening over there that would shake up the game. And lucky us, that’s just what we found in our inboxes this morning…

Getting Crafty With Aimee Olexy

Posted by Tara Nurin on July 13th, 2012

This is not a story about yarn bombing.

We sort of wish it was because a story about a seven-year-old trend that compels artsy-crafty types to take up the ridiculous hobby of knitting sweaters for trees, signposts and sundry other inanimate outdoor objects would give us so much more to make fun of. But alas, although the curator of the Philadelphia Museum of Art’s Craft Spoken Here exhibition did commission a yarn bomber to knit a colorful cozy for the front entrance of the Perelman Building, to our knowledge, Aimee Olexy took no part in that endeavor.

Six Pack: Doughnut Desserts in Philadelphia Restaurants

Posted by Aubrey Nagle on June 1st, 2012

Sure, you could go to Wawa at 7 a.m. to wrestle an icing-slathered and probably stale doughnut out of another commuter’s grubby hands to get your morning sugar rush. Or, you could wait for the dessert menu after dinner at one of Philadelphia’s finest restaurants for a twist on the breakfast staple.

If you’re bored with the same old Boston Cream check out these six restaurants serving up daring and delicious dessert dougnuts.

Think You Can Guess The Next Chef At Talula’s Garden?

Posted by Jason Sheehan on August 26th, 2011

Yesterday, we posted an update on the revolving-chef action at Talula’s Garden, with a quote from corporate overlord Stephen Starr claiming that there’d be a new white jacket bossing the line “in five days.”

This, of course, began the speculation about who he and partner Aimee Olexy had in mind for the suicide mission honor of being the restaurant’s third exec in four months. People were searching Foobooz’s roster of Sideline Chefs for likely replacements. And here at the home office, we killed a good part of our afternoon proposing various possibilities and conspiracy theories for who would step into the vacancy in Olexy’s kitchen.

At some point, it occurred to us that if we were having so much fun trying to read the minds of Starr and Olexy, you folks might also enjoy the challenge. You might be able to think of some potential replacements that we couldn’t. Hell, you might even know something that we hadn’t yet heard. So we decided to turn it into a game. And yes, there will be prizes.

So here’s how we’re going to play…
