James Beard Finalists Announced, Two Locals Move On & Journalism Gets Nods as Well

The James Beard Foundation announced their 2013 awards finalists today. The list of JBF Awards semifinalists included a boatload of Philadelphia area nominees but the list of finalists find just two, three if we claim Dogfish Head’s Sam CalagioneBrad Spence moved on as a finalist for Best Chef – Midatlantic for his work at Amis. Vetri also made the list of finalists for Best Service.

National Accolades for FedNuts, Amis, Le Virtu & Alla Spina

Wings at Alla Spina

The praise, it keeps on coming for Philadelphia. Zagat saluted two Philadelphia restaurants as the hottest Italian restaurants in the country. Amis and Le Virtu received the praise.

Also in the Marc Vetri orbit, Alla Spina’s chicken wings were named among the best chicken wings in the U.S. by Food & Wine.

Michael Solomonov’s Federal Donuts also got some national love as the donut and fried chicken spot was featured on NBC’s 1st Look.

Anthony Bourdain’s new(ish) show, “The Layover” follows the famed foodie as he travels through the US, Asia and Europe where he only has 24-48 hours to reveal the story of a place’s culture, food and people. Well, it looks like his next layover has landed him in Philly, and the episode is premiering the night of Monday, December 3rd. To celebrate Bourdain’s tasty trek through our fair city, several spots are hosting viewing parties.

Election-Themed Industry Night, Tonight at Amis

In case any of you out there forgot to crawl out of your Sandy-proof panic rooms until today, we’d like to remind you that Election Day is tomorrow. And wanting to make sure this fact does not escape anyone, a.Kitchen is hosting an election-themed Industry Night tonight at Amis, offering various politically appropriate snacks and beverages for those looking to get a leg up on their Election Night drinking (what, how do you celebrate?).

While there’s no sight of Freedom Fries on the menu, it’s hard to get more patriotic than this…
