So that was fun. Anthony Bourdain finally came to Philadelphia and last night The Layover showed the country that yes, Philadelphia is a lot more than cheesesteaks and Rocky. The show captured our spirit, our accents and our many tattoos. It was good television and enjoyable to see our city in such a good light.

Anthony Bourdain’s new(ish) show, “The Layover” follows the famed foodie as he travels through the US, Asia and Europe where he only has 24-48 hours to reveal the story of a place’s culture, food and people. Well, it looks like his next layover has landed him in Philly, and the episode is premiering the night of Monday, December 3rd. To celebrate Bourdain’s tasty trek through our fair city, several spots are hosting viewing parties.

We just got off the phone with Ken Roberts of Chef Ken’s Cafe in Mount Airy, who confirms that Anthony Bourdain was just at the Germantown Avenue Southern and Soul restaurant, shooting a segment for his Philadelphia episode of The Layover.
Chef Ken’s has been open since 2005 on the same block that has been the long time home of McMennamin’s and more recently, Earth Bread + Brewery. For more on Chef Ken (a former executive chef at the Venetian in Las Vegas), check out this 2011 profile by occasional Foobooz contributor Lou Mancinelli.

So Anthony Bourdain, who is in town filming The Layover tweeted this morning that he was working off his hangover at Pho 75. Joining him for his Vietnamese breakfast was Michael Solomonov.
After that Bourdain tweeted a comment that we were thrilled to see.

We intend to be the first food/travel show to do a cheesesteak-free Philly show. #lettheotherguydoit and no steps

For lunch Bourdain ate lunch at the Old City location of Sichuan hot spot, Han Dynasty. We saw this one coming as Bourdain hung out with Han Chiang last night at Dirty Frank’s.
Since then he’s gone dark but we expect he’s showing up at a Solomonov spot tonight, but which one, Zahav, Percy Street BBQ or Federal Donuts?
Where will Bourdain pop up next?

In the past month Anthony Bourdain has shot episodes of his Travel Channel show the Layover in Chicago, Toronto and Seattle. In each of those cities the air date has been reported as fall of 2012 or early 2013. So we’d expect the same timeframe for the Philadelphia episode of The Layover.
Yesterday Bourdain filmed in at least six locations:
- DiBruno Bros. (Italian Market Location)
- Paesano’s (9th Street Location)
- Mütter Museum
- Barnes Foundation
- Amis
- Dirty Frank’s
Today he’s tweeted that breakfast is at Pho 75.

After dinner at Amis, Anthony Bourdain has turned up at Dirty Frank’s with Han Chiang (Han Dynasty) and Peter McAndrews (Paesano’s, Modo Mio, Monsu, Popolino, La Porta). With that crew in tow it sounds like the night is just getting started.
Check out this Munchies episode to see what happens when Chiang and McAndrews hang out.
Bourdain has been town all day today filming an episode of The Layover. Earlier in the day the bad-boy chef was at Paesano’s and DiBruno Bros. in the Italian Market before taking in some culture at the Mütter Museum and the Barnes Foundation.
Thanks to Chef Eric Paraskevas for the photo
