Art In The Age

A Collaboration Dinner For The Ages

Posted by Tara Nurin on February 22nd, 2013

artintheagebottles

Art in the Age is all about collaboration this month. First, it was the First Friday Prohibition affair with the Constitution Center and now it’s a four-course pairing dinner tonight at Lotus Farm to Table in Media. In addition to serving cocktails made from Art in the Age’s old-timey Sage, Rhuby, Snap and Root, chef Ryan Sulikowski is putting together some pretty impressive sounding dishes–some of which include said spirits.

To wit: course #1 is Sage-roasted apple, braised cabbage, juniper and smoked basil bread, paired with sage gin, apple cinnamon syrup, burnt rosemary and soda water. And dessert is Root chocolate chip cookie, vanilla olive oil ice cream and candied rutabaga paired with Root, vanilla cream and shaved chocolate. Sounds like one for the ages, huh? Tickets are $55 per person.

Tonight: Art In The Age Of Prohibition Reception

Posted by Tara Nurin on February 1st, 2013

ArtInTheAgeofProhibition

To kick off its Prohibition-themed art and ephemera exhibition, Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction is partnering with the National Constitution Center to host a flapper-icious First Friday fete this evening from 6-8pm. Throughout the month, the edgy-yet-retro clothing and gift apothecary/boutique will display graphic illustrations that depict famous Philly Prohibition characters by local artist Hank Krall, as well as artifacts from the era. It’s Called “Art in the Age of Prohibition.” Get it?

Through the exhibition’s run, the store will also program lectures and workshops on homebrewing, Prohibition cocktails and spirits production. As for tonight, we couldn’t get any confirmation on the drink list, but every time we’ve been to an Art in the Age reception, there’s been a bartender mixing esoteric concoctions with the company’s three historically-inspired liquor brands: Root, Snap and Rhuby. We’re guessing that, tonight, they’ll probably be adding Sage to the mix(ers) as well.

Side Project Jerky Pairing (Yeah, We Said Jerky Pairing)

Posted by Jason Sheehan on November 1st, 2012

Blah blah First Friday, blah blah denim exhibit… What matters here (or at least what should matter most to fans of fine dried beef products and complicated cocktails) is that there will be a tasting of Side Project Jerky, paired with Art In The Age cocktails, being offered tomorrow during the Norman Porter denim exhibit at the Art In The Age storefront in Old City.

I’m not 100% sure, but I’m fairly certain that this represents the first beef jerky pairing in modern (food) history. And even if it isn’t, it’s still pretty cool. I mean seriously… Which would you rather have at a cocktail party? More silly little toast rounds stacked with foie gras, marrow foam and unicorn daydreams, or a handful of damn fine jerky?

Yeah, that what I thought. And from what I hear, the Norman Porter jeans are pretty swanky, too.

Art In The Age’s SAGE Due To Hit Stores This Month

Posted by Jason Sheehan on August 16th, 2012

Oh, those crazy cats over at Art In The Age… First they get us to drink boozy rootbeer party juice. Then it’s liquid gingersnaps. Then they find a use for rhubarb that doesn’t involve someone’s grandma making a pie. And now they’re back again with SAGE which, weirdly, tastes just like Froot Loops.

Oh, but I kid. No, SAGE is a “garden gin” and tastes, as you might expect, like sage. And thyme. And rosemary, lavender and fennel. It tastes like drinking an entire herb garden and, according to the Art In The Age website, like the “grace and elegance of post-colonial, pre-industrial America.” And I’m sure we all know exactly what that tastes like.

All you cocktail freaks can start organizing your zesters and atomizers now. Sage is due to hit the shelves in Pennsylvania on August 25th

Oh, wait… There’s a video?

Federal Donuts and Art In The Age: Super Friends of the Donut World

Posted by Jason Sheehan on April 5th, 2012

Okay, so yesterday we got the best kind of delivery to Foobooz World Headquarters: A nice box of donuts. But these were no ordinary donuts. Oh, no… These were the first, hot-out-of-the-robot samples of the new limited edition Art In The Age / Federal Donuts collaboration donuts.

Yeah, I know. What they’re doing over at FedNuts is making donuts that mimic the flavor profile (if not the alcohol content) of the three AITA spirits currently available: Rhuby, Snap and Root. These donuts will be available for a limited time only (April 20-29) at Federal Donuts and, as anyone who has spent any time waiting in the donut-and-fried-chicken line at FedNuts will tell you, will probably sell out unbelievably fast.

Tell me about the donuts!

Art In The Age Dinner At Ela: First Look At The Menu

Posted by Jason Sheehan on March 6th, 2012

On Tuesday, March 13th, known weirdo (and dreamboat) Jason Cichonski will be pairing his love for odd flavor combinations with products that revel in their own small-batch intellectual complexity when he hosts a five-course dinner at Ela, complete with custom cocktails featuring ROOT, SNAP and RHUBY from Art In The Age.

Under normal circumstances, this would be just another booze-pairing event. But it’s Cichonski’s involvement that makes it a curiosity. Those of you who read Trey Popp’s recent review of Ela understand that Cichonski operates with a strange, Rain Man-like facility when it comes to designing dishes. He sees things on the street that kinda look like other things in his pantry, so builds a dish around them. He makes some mistake during testing an experimental entree and ends up constructing an entirely new dish around some accidental juxtaposition of flavors. So when you give someone like that access to the already complicated flavors of the Art In The Age products, who knows what’s going to happen.

Oh, wait. We do.
