One More Way to Get George Sabatino’s Food This Summer

George Sabatino will be in the kitchen at Morgan’s Pier when it opens this Thursday, May 9th but that won’t be the only place you can get his food this summer. Groundswell Design Group is collaborating with The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, University of the Arts, and Avram Hornik (4 Corners Management) to create a “Pop Up Garden” at 313 S. Broad Street, across from the Kimmel Center.

Beginning on Thursday, May 16th, the pop-up garden will transform a vacant lot into a community space. Locust trees will provide shade for visitors who stop in for a drink and bite of food after work. Repurposed shipping containers will be used to serve the food and drinks. Vintage metal rocking chairs, a sculptural wall constructed from old shipping pallets and strings of market lights will warm the lot.

The garden will offer three varieties of craft beer, sangria and casual food by Sabatino.

The pop-up garden hours:

Monday through Thursday; 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.
Friday and Saturday; 1 p.m. to 11 p.m.
Sunday 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.

The Passyunk Post is reporting that Avram Hornik is looking to reopen the Dolphin Tavern in short order. The sometimes awesome bar with occasional striptease has been closed since the summer.

Unclear is whether Hornik will continue the go-go past, either similar to what the Dolphin had going or more like what the Trestle Inn is today. We’ve got calls out to the involved parties and will update this post when we get more details.

Hornik’s empire has been rapidly expanding. He owns Lucy’s Hat Shop, Noche, Drinkers Pub, Drinkers Tavern, Drinkers West, Morgans Pier, Ortlieb’s Lounge and Union Transfer. He’s also working to restore the long abandoned Boot & Saddle, also on South Broad Street.

Details on Waterfront Drinking Spot, Morgan’s Pier

Ground has been broken on Avram Hornik’s riverfront beer garden, Morgan’s Pier. The open air seasonal venue adjacent to the Benjamin Franklin Bridge is aiming to open by Thursday, May 24th. The spot will feature live music, dancing and food reminiscent of a backyard picnic-and barbecue. Landscape architect, Groundswell Design Group ,whose work you may have seen in the exterior area at Talula’s Garden, is working on the project. The firm is bringing in large Linden trees, repurposed and reclaimed elements and lighting to make for a welcoming and relaxing Delaware riverfront spot.

Boot & Saddle Gets the Go Ahead

Avram Hornik has gotten the zoning go ahead from the city to open the Boot & Saddle on south Broad Street. The approval comes with the provision that neighbors not be affected by sound coming from the Boot & Saddle. Hornik plans to bring in R5 Productions to book music act at the refurbished space. The building has been vacant for more than a decade and construction will begin this summer and continue into 2013. And yes, the sign will be restored.

Boot & Saddle Goes Before Neighborhood Tonight

Avram Hornik’s plans for the Boot & Saddle on South Broad Street will be going in front of the neighborhood tonight. The South Broad Street Neighbors Association (SBSNA) Zoning meeting will hear the application for Hornik’s plans to turn the Boot & Saddle into a restaurant and bar with live music.

When the plans were first revealed, SBSNA President Peter Zutter said the neighbors association was not thrilled by the idea. Since then a petition in favor of the project has been circulated online and gathered almost 1,200 signatures.

1131 South Broad Street (Boot & Saddle Bar) – The application is for the Use as a Restaurant/Bar where more than Fifty (50) people congregate, including D.J. Music, Live Entertainment, and/or self contained Sound System and Dancing by patrons, in the same building with accessory Office on the 2nd Floor, and a Single-Family Dwelling on the 3rd Floor. Hornik Gives an Interview, Names His Riverfront Bar

The Philadelphia Daily News scores an interview with Avram Hornik, the man behind Lucy’s Hat Shop, Noche, three Drinker’s locations and more recently, Union Transfer and Ortlieb’s Lounge. It’s an interesting look at the man and how he now sees live entertainment as vital to the places he’s looking to open.

And as a follow-up Michael Klein gets the name for Hornik’s successor to Octo. The riverfront bar with live entertainment will be known as Morgan’s Pier, in honor of the first person to cross the Ben Franklin Bridge.

Ortlieb’s Lounge Opening in Mid-Month

Ortlieb’s Lounge has announced that the reborn Orltlieb’s Jazzhaus will reopen with live entertainment on Tuesday, April 17th. Rebuilt by Four Corners Management and Avram Hornik will offer a variety of live entertainment six nights a week including “Jazz Jam Sessions” on Tuesdays. The night will be hosted by former Ortlieb’s owner and booker, Pete Souders. Wednesday will feature and “Open Mic Soul Jam” and Thursdays will headline the Ortlieb’s house band, “Sittin’ Back” with Slo’n Shakey.

Weekends will include a mix of rock, funk and soul spun by Philadelphia DJs and Sundays will be dedicated to an open mic comedy night.

Beer Garden for Delaware Avenue

Last year we had a great Memorial Day Sunday beer garden crawl that made stops at Memphis Taproom, Frankford Hall and Silk City. This year it sounds like we’ll have a new stop on the tour. Michael Klein reports that the Union Transfer team of Avram Hornik, Sean Agnew and company are opening an American beer garden at the former Octo on Delaware Avenue.

There will be space for 200 bikes to park and local craft beers on draft.

Hornik’s Boot & Saddle Plan Meets Resistance

Today’ Metro has a story on Avram Hornik’s plan for resurrecting the long-closed Boot & Saddle Bar at Broad and Ellsworth and the resistance it has already received from the South Broad Street Neighbors Association (SBSNA).

“We’re not thrilled about it,” said [SBSNA] President Peter Zutter, who heard Hornik present plans at an Oct. 18 community meeting. “We’re familiar with his other locations and it’s not really the kind of development we want to see on that part of Broad Street.”

The neighbors association promises to fight the liquor license transfer.

Us, we imagine a day when a newly re-lit neon boot beckons life back to a neglected commercial block. It’s proximity to the Broad Street line making it a great meeting place before or after a sporting event at the stadium complex. Hell, we might even try to line dance.
