Jim Caiola and David Salama who own Beau Monde and L’Etage in Philadelphia are now going to be running New York City’s Tavern on the Green. The team submitted a bid to win a twenty year lease on the Central Park landmark back in April and it was highest rated request for proposal received by New York’s Parks & Recreation department.
Katy Sparks will be the executive chef at the new Tavern on the Green. She has worked at The Quilted Giraffe, Bobby Flay’s Mesa Grill and Bolo, and Quilty’s where she was chosen as a “Top Ten Best New Chef in America” by Food & Wine Magazine.
Tavern on the Green is anticipated to reopen in the Fall of 2013.

OK. This is officially from the Department of Whoa, We Never Saw This One Coming. New York City’s Department of Parks and Recreation is currently accepting bids for a 20-year license to operate a bar and restaurant on the site of the former Tavern On the Green, which for the majority of the 20th Century was a prime destination dining spot in Central Park but later became known as a bankrupt tourist trap. In case you missed it, there’s a new BBQ restaurant on South Street, from the folks who brought you Zahav, Marigold, and Xochitl. The team visited a disgusting amount of ’cue joints in Texas to get their meat right (a story expertly told here by food editor Ashley Primis, who accompanied the carnivorous lot on their research trip). But a man can only eat so much meat. He needs something to wash it all down. So I paid a visit to Percy Street to sample their drinks.

The big week is almost here – it’s starting tomorrow, in fact. We’ve spent the past month pulling out highlights from the overflowing list of the events and, well, we’re kind of pooped before it even starts. We’re saving our strength for next week.
So today we’re asking you: what are you planning to do for Beer Week? As much as possible? Select events? Will you stick with the pay-as-much-as-you-drink events or lay out $45, $65 or even $95 for big beer dinners? Or will you just buy a sixpack of Miller Lite and pretend like it’s not even happening?
