Sippin’ By The River Goes To Camden

Posted by Tara Nurin on November 2nd, 2012

Remember that time you went to Sippin’ by the River and got so drunk your friends had to keep you from jumping in the Delaware? Yeah, us either. But we’re sure it’s happened to at least someone along the way, considering the annual Penn’s Landing event is one of Philly’s longest  running and most cherished drinking events that doesn’t involving dressing like Santa.

But you’re older now, and you might not have even noticed that Sippin’ wasn’t held last season for the first time in 16 years, as organizers pulled inward and figured out how to regroup for the future. What they’ve figured out is that they should make it a more grown-up event, happening November 10th from 1-5 pm, with $65 tickets, a greater emphasis on programming and food and, gasp, a relocation to Campbell’s Field in Camden.

Tonight: Drinking Ancient Beers (And Learning Stuff!) In New Jersey

Posted by Tara Nurin on October 16th, 2012

Patrick McGovern may just be the coolest Philadelphian you’ve never heard of. His title, Scientific Director of the Penn Museum’s Biomolecular Archaeology Laboratory, sounds all wonky and boring, sure, but what that means is the dude plays with ancient booze molecules all day. Not only does he travel the world studying remnants of alcoholic beverages found in archeological digs, but brother man played Dr. Watson to Dogfish Head owner Sam Calagione’s Sherlock Holmes on the Discovery Channel series “Brew Masters” that had the two traipsing around the globe to recreate beers from antiquity.

All of this is to say that no true beer geek or boozehound with a drop of intellectual curiosity can pass to the next level of elitism without either reading McGovern’s books about the history of wine, beer and spirits or attending an event he’s hosting. Because there are no Cliffs Notes or movie versions of his tomes (at least not to our knowledge), you’d perhaps be best getting the shorthand straight from McGovern’s mouth, and you have the opportunity to do just that tonight from 6:30-9:30pm at Camden County College (CCC) in Blackwood, NJ.

Elfreth’s Alley Speakeasy Costume Ball This Weekend

Posted by Tara Nurin on October 5th, 2012

In a town where beer fests are growing as common as outsider references to Eagles fans pelting Santa Claus with make-believe snowballs, it’s getting harder and harder to make any one festival stand out. So we say kudos to the folks at Elfreth’s Alley, who are dressing up their Brew Fest 2012 this Saturday in Prohibition-era costume. (This is not to be confused with the Prohibition-themed and costumed Bathtub Beer Fest happening at the Constitution Center on November 15).

This weekend, Elfreth’s Alley’s Speakeasy Costume Ball, which runs from 6-9pm and costs $20 for a general admission ticket, will award prizes for the best look-alike Eliot Ness and educate participants as to his and Prohibition’s lasting influence on contemporary Pennsylvania with a talk by beer writer Lew Bryson and historical archivist Bob Skiba. There’s also a Bootlegger Homebrew Contest (clever, guys, clever) and a so-called “Rumrunner” raffle for $2000 worth of prizes. Honestly, that’s a lot of hooch to lubricate your brain and tongue, for not a lot of jack. Proceeds benefit the Elfreth’s Alley Assocation.

Posted by Aubrey Nagle on July 24th, 2012

Starting at 5pm on Thursday July 26th Iron Hill Brewery in Chestnut Hill will be hosting the Wrestlemania-themed IBU Smackdown. Head brewer Paul Rutherford will be pitting his Ultimate Warrior IPA against his Belgian Full Nelson in a race to see which cask gets kicked first and is named The Champ.

The menu for the night will include a list of hot dogs named after famous wrestling stars while vintage Wrestlemania will be playing on TV screens around the brewery. Rumor has it there will be some “wrestlers” (brewers in costume, perhaps?) roaming around as well.

Look for the dog menu and details on the Ultimate Warrior and Belgian Full Nelson after the jump.
