Hey, You Wanna See What Hundreds Of People Eating Free Chocolate Looks Like?

Posted by Jason Sheehan on May 15th, 2013

It looks a lot like this–on a perfectly warm and sunny day in Rittenhouse Square, for the first of our Best Of Philly public tastings.

We had several hundred people show up. The line stretched long but moved fast. And while we obviously can’t tell you yet who the people picked as the winner (you’ll have to wait for August’s Best of Philly issue for the final reveal), I can say that I snuck a look inside the bag full of completed ballots and saw votes for all five nominated chocolatiers–Eclat Chocolate, Chocolates By Mueller, Marcie Blaine Artisinal Chocolates, Lore’s Chocolates and Shane Confectionery–who made the trek today.

For those of you who couldn’t make it–or who didn’t heed our warnings and showed up a little too late–we have the next best thing to eating chocolate: Pictures of chocolate. Check out the photo spread after the jump.

Free Chocolate: Best Of Philly Public Tasting

Posted by Jason Sheehan on May 9th, 2013

chocolates

Okay, everyone. Clear your schedules for the afternoon of Wednesday, May 15 because that’s when we’re going to be holding the first of our 2013 Best of Philly public taste tests. As we did last year, we’re taking a bunch of our Best of Philly categories out to you, the people, and letting you choose the best in the city. And for this year’s first event, we’re picking the best chocolate in Philadelphia.

The participants have been chosen. It’ll be Eclat Chocolate, Chocolate by Mueller, Marcie Blaine Artisinal Chocolates, Lore’s Chocolates and Shane Confectionery all going head to head (to head to head) in a contest for sweet supremacy. And yes, it is so exciting that I am resorting to alliteration.

The whole thing will kick off at noon on May 15th. It’ll be over by 1pm. But during that hour, it’ll be free chocolate for all comers. And to find out exactly where this thing is going to happen, you’ll have to stay tuned to our Facebook and Twitter feeds.

Got it? Good. See you all there.

So seriously, in fact, that we’ve decided at this early stage to toss out a very open-ended question to you–the fans, the readers, the people who always seem to think we get everything wrong. What we’re asking is this:

A Look at the Best of Philly Scavenger Hunt

Posted by Trey Popp on August 2nd, 2012

Every normal month I pick a place that’s been around a while and try to experience it afresh. After all, why should new restaurants get all the love (or lambasting)? But this not a normal month. It’s Best of Philly month.

Open Philly Mag’s August issue and you’ll find 97 shout-outs to the restaurants, chefs, and dishes that rise above all others in their own particular class. That’s a lot. Except it isn’t. Those 97 got whittled down from something like 397. When you go out looking for, say, the best African restaurant in town, you can expect a few detours before you land at your destination.

So this month, I’m steering away from the ordinary in-depth treatment to give you a little taste of what the Best of Philly chase is like. Here, presented in a swift and shifting stream of consciousness that is the clearest windowpane into the ADHD-addled mindset of the BOP scavenger hunt, I present the honorable mentions, surprises, disappointments, and confusions that lie behind it all.
