Six Pack: Mac and Cheese in Philadelphia

Posted by Maegan Cadet on December 12th, 2012

Macaroni and cheese: that ooey, gooey dish Mom used to make fresh after school with cheese oozing out of every bite. While we’ve all had it, we haven’t had it quite like these six restaurants serve it up.

7th Annual East Passyunk Car Show and Street Festival

Posted by Aubrey Nagle on July 18th, 2012

Next Sunday ,July 29th from noon to 5 p.m. East Passyunk Avenue will be turned into a car show and street festival from Dickinson to Broad. Along with the 140-plus vehicles competing for Best of Show there will be vendors, live music, circus performers, kids activities, and the Bang! Boom! Craft! Show all for free.

Most importantly, of course, there will be plenty of food from EPA’s restaurants. Participating restaurants include Marra’s, Mamma Mia, Noir, and Plenty. Cantina Los Caballitos and El Zarape will be serving their menus and specials outdoors while Birra and Le Virtu will be holding outdoor beer gardens for the event. Stogie Joe’s will also be having an outdoor craft beer bar.

Little Baby’s Ice Cream will be rolling around during the festival and from 11:30-5pm Ms. Goody Cupcake will be celebrating its Cupcake & Cars: One Year Anniversary Party. The party will be full of samples, new treat debuts, prizes, and a car-themed cake cutting at 2pm.

Barra Opening Tonight in Old City

Posted by Aubrey Nagle on June 12th, 2012

Gordon Dinerman of Birra has recently helped Rob LaScala turn his Rocchino’s and Azione spots in Old City into one, larger restaurant called Barra. Rocchino’s and Azione were established at 2nd and Chestnut for six months before LaScala turned to Dinerman to relaunch the two as one, which was facilitated by a previous open connection between the two restaurants.

LaBan Review Finds Flaws at Birra

Posted by Foobooz on April 16th, 2012

Craig LaBan likes the concept of East Passyunk pizzeria and beer bar Birra, but his review highlights problems with poor execution and flawed recipes.

The chunky tomatoes were less of a bother (though not a plus, either) with spaghetti and meatballs pie, which was probably the best of the novelty offerings — the noodles baked to an extra little crunch, the meatballs tender with veal and milk-soaked bread. But the addition of tomato sauce and “white sauce” (molten crème fraîche) to the “cheeseburger” pizza completely disconnected Birra’s rendition from anything resembling its namesake. The sesame-dusted pickles were a highlight, but two of my favorite foods had essentially dissolved into one disastrous, indistinguishable heap.

Skip the Gimmicks, Enjoy the Pizza at Birra

Posted by Foobooz on February 27th, 2012

Trey Popp urges you to skip the Birra Bowl but don’t ignore the East Passyunk gastro-bar with the “red-sauce soul.”

Birra’s normal pizzas, anchored by thin crusts with just the right amount of crackle, are terrific—from a caper-y puttanesca stoked with whole anchovy fillets to a pie strewn with exotic mushrooms and truffle shavings. Same goes for the cheeseburger pizza, another novelty act whose aged beef and homemade pickles turn a complete gimmick into pub-grub gold. Salads are large and lovely, built from flawless mesclun greens that nestle slender enoki mushrooms and fat royal trumpets, or a color-wheel dice of roasted vegetables. Use one to balance out a buttery trio of prosciutto-wrapped scallops.

Tonight: Happy Hour on Passyunk

Posted by Foobooz on January 5th, 2012

A Foobooz follower on Twitter asked for a happy hour suggestion on Passyunk Avenue. That got us to thinking that we hadn’t mentioned Birra’s new happy hours on the site. Tuesday through Friday from 4 to 6 p.m. all pizzas are half-priced. That means $3 for a cheese pizza, $4.50 Gaaalic and; $6.50 for Mac & Cheese pizza. Looking for something later in the evening, Birra offers a late-night happy hour from 11 p.m. to 1 a.m. with $4 craft drafts, $5 glasses of wine and $6 specialty cocktails.

Dough Draws at Birra

Posted by Foobooz on January 4th, 2012

With mac and cheese served in a bowl of pizza dough you might think Birra is just about the excess. Brian Freedman finds that isn’t the case, though the dough is the draw.

The dough is the real highlight, however, when used for its main purpose: as the base to Birra’s satisfying pizzas. There are more than a dozen of them here, ranging from the margherita, with its fresh mozzarella and cured tomatoes, to the puttanesca, which, though half a step too salty for me, was nonetheless a good-faith effort at recreating that piquant sauce. One slice was perfect, the salinity of the meaty white anchovies, capers and olive pesto softened by garlic pesto and mozzarella; two, however, would have required more beer to quench the resulting thirst than I wanted to drink.

Eat This Now: Birra’s Shrimp

Posted by Victor Fiorillo on November 22nd, 2011

I went to Passyunk Avenue’s new Birra this weekend with the intention of trying the pizza. I did try the pizza. And it was very good. But the real star of the meal had to be the $18 bowl of to-die-for shrimp, which are now officially my favorite version of the crustaceans in town. (Sorry, Sid Booker.) Read the rest of this entry »
