South Bowl Is Going to be a Thing

Posted by Foobooz on February 26th, 2013

We’ve been sitting on the unconfirmed story that the fine folk behind North Bowl are opening South Bowl on Oregon Avenue forever. So long, we kind of forgot it was a thing. But the Passyunk Post is here to remind us, yes, it is indeed happening.

South Bowl is looking to open this fall at 19 E Oregon Avenue, just down the block from Tony Luke’s, Cheerleaders, and well, not much else (except IKEA). But a good bowling alley that isn’t constantly backed up, close to I-95, Delaware Avenue and the stadiums, run by the top notch folk at North Bowl is a big win.

Photos of the Opened-Just-Hours-Ago (Super-Cool) Noble

Posted by Ashley Primis on May 5th, 2009

Monday marked the opening of Noble, a new Rittenhouse eatery from the people behind the much-lauded LBI restaurant Blue. Besides a rooftop herb garden (super cool), they focus on organic, local and sustainable. As in, you won’t find the overfished East Coast skate wing on this menu. (Check out dinner menu here.)

The dish lineup will change frequently, but the first menu is set. And it’s large. Think starters like poached white asparagus with a fried egg, grilled veal flank steak with a potato dumpling, and a bar menu with chicken wings in a spicy watermelon glaze. Yum. Oh, and we can’t forget drinks: We’d choose the TI Jean with whiskey, lemon juice, spearmint, house-made ginger beer. (For good measure, here’s the house cocktail menu.)

See a quick walk-through of the interior here.

College Pizza Moves Into Strikes

Posted by Foobooz on December 5th, 2006

University City’s College Pizza will be moving into the Strikes Bowling Lounge at 4040 Locust Street. College Pizza has been looking for a new home since their current spot on the 3900 block of Chestnut will be razed for future Penn construction. College Pizza is also looking to open a second location at 42nd and Chestnut. That location’s exact setup isn’t determined. It may be a diner that also sells pizza. And yes, this story had the biggest headline on the front of today’s Daily Pennsylvanian.

Thursday Night

Posted by Foobooz on October 26th, 2006

Have you been bowling at North Bowl yet? From 5-7 you can play for $4 a game, $2 PBRs all night. The $4 games are available every weeknight.

Foobooz hears that Oceanaire, 700 Walnut Street, is open tonight, just understand they’re still in training. Part of tonight’s proceeds go to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

The Flyers are back on the ice for the first time since cleaning house, so you could head to O’Neals, 3rd and South, and watch and see if they’ve gotten any better.

Lucky Strike Lanes

Posted by Foobooz on September 20th, 2006

Lucky Strike Lanes

Kirsten Henri hits up Lucky Strike Lanes and finds that that there is some decent food at the upscale bowling alley and lounge.

While you might expect the snacks to be better, the sandwiches and burgers were the winners. A toasted turkey club, properly triple-decked with all the necessary components, had any traces of healthiness eradicated and was bumped up in flavor by the clever addition of a runny fried egg. The garlicky flank steak on the steak sandwich was remarkably tender, although it was buried under blue cheese.

What’s That Rumbling?

Posted by Foobooz on August 18th, 2006

North Bowl

Could it be true? That rumbling noise heard throughout Northern Liberties? Rumor has it that North Bowl is opening tonight.
Yes, the eagerly awaited Nolibs bowling alley and lounge is set to open tonight. Expect 17 lanes and a more relaxed dress code than some other bowling alley lounges.

First Glance: Lucky Strike

Posted by Foobooz on June 19th, 2006

Lucky Strike Lanes

Not a complete look, but Foobooz gives you it’s first glance at Lucky Strike Lanes on Chestnut Street. Walked in on Saturday afternoon looking for a bite to eat and some World Cup soccer. To enter Lucky Strike you must head up a couple flights of stairs and into a very posh lounge. Lots of low brown sofas and 12 lanes along the back wall. There was just a mother and daughter bowling and a waitstaff of about 20. After having to wait to be seated, despite the legion of corporate-goth worker bees, each with their own piece of flair, we were informed that since the 1300 block of Chestnut Street was never wired for cable, that none of the many beautiful high-definition TVs or projectors could broadcast the World Cup on ABC. A full first look would have to wait, national pride was at stake.
Worth noting, renting a lane is $45 an hour and the draught beer selection is Yuengling, Stella Artois, and Coors Light.
Foobooz will have to return, but only when nothing worth watching is on network TV or Comcast.

Lucky Strike Opens June 16

Posted by Foobooz on May 24th, 2006

Lucky Strike Lanes
Lucky Strike Lounge & Bowl is set to open June 16th above West Elm Furniture at 1336 Chestnut.

Glancing at the menu proves this isn’t your mother’s bowling alley. But will you order something called Tomato & Cheese S’mores?
