We Have A Winner: VIP Tickets To Maifest

Posted by Jason Sheehan on April 12th, 2013

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, the haikus have been written, the judges have convened and a winner has been chosen for the pair of free VIP tickets to Brauhaus Schmitz’s first annual Maifest.

Because we had so many entries this time (70 haiku, by something like 60 different people), we actually called in some reinforcements in the form of our official grammar ninja and part-time haiku expert, Nora Kelly. She made the final call on the top two poems this time, and her reasoning was impeccable.

Jay: He makes references to food, which I wasn’t hot about (too easy), but points for use of German, funny/surprise factor and realism on the relationship front (I love my girlfriend, but not more than I love pretzels and beer). Also, he didn’t only list brand names, but instead incorporated food references in a breezy way. Brauhaus and its offerings got a shout-out without the poem resembling an ad. He created something that was more poetic than your average non-sequitor-y haiku.
Luke B: Points for leaving out easy references to beer and food names, dual use of “wasted” (cleverness/double entendres make for solid haikus, since they’re such short poems), and general tone. Luke seems like a happy dude with a lot of self-confidence–or at least enough to wear lederhosen. Points deducted for implying he’ll be wasted for all of May.

But when it came right down to it, I chose the winner. And while it was difficult to choose on the grounds of content (Luke, I have no problem with you spending the entire month of May drunk), there was a technical concern which made the choice a simple one. So the winner is…

Free Stuff Alert! VIP Tickets To Brauhaus Schmitz’s Maifest

Posted by Jason Sheehan on April 10th, 2013

BeerGirl1

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, spring is in the air. The sun is shining, birds are tweeting and Jeremy Nolen and Brauhaus Schmitz are making plans to shut down an entire section of South Street for their first annual Maifest Spring Festival and drinkapalooza.

Maifest (which, in case you need a culturally apt reason to attend, is a TOTALLY authentic German spring festival which is celebrated by drinking beer and jamming sausages in your face–yeah, you heard me) will take place on Saturday, May 4th, from noon to 8pm. There will be beers. There will be food. There will be oompa bands and girls in dirndls and lots of roast pork. But do you know what could make it even better? A pair of free VIP tickets to the whole shebang.

Luckily, that’s what we’re giving away today.

Two Big Dinners Announced For Bistrot La Minette

Posted by Alex Tewfik on March 13th, 2013

Bistrot La Minette

Peter Woolsey is a busy and popular man, and I’ll tell you why.

Today and tomorrow at Bistrot La Minette, chef Woolsey and Jeremy Nolen from Brauhaus Schmitz have teamed up to create a four-course Alsace dinner for $35 ($55 with wine pairings). If you’re unsure of what Alsatian food is, just know that Alsace is one of the smallest regions in France and shares a border with Germany–so what you’re assuming is probably right: A master of French cuisine teaming up with a master of modern German cuisine to make some kind of weird, Franco-German culinary Voltron. It sounds near perfect.

On Thursday, February 7th Brauhaus Schmitz will be celebrating Karneval. So put on your craziest costume and come join Brauhaus for a fun time. For every Kölsch guests drink they’ll be entered in a raffle to win a Früh kegerator with a Kölsch Kranz, glassware, and tap handle (pictured above).

The whole Brauhaus Schmitz staff will be in costume and Karneval music will be playing all night. And any guests who show up in costume will get a complimentary Kölsch.

If you have no idea what this Karneval stuff is, rest assured, it will be a good time.

Jeremy Nolen At The James Beard House

Posted by Jason Sheehan on February 4th, 2013

NolenBeard2

Jeremy Nolen and his crew from Brauhaus Schmitz brought their modern German cuisine to the James Beard House on Saturday for a 6 course Teutonic extravaganza that had the well-heeled Manhattan crowds snuffling up everything from blood sausage and parsnips to cherry strudel and ice wine sabayon. From what we understand, the event itself was amazing, and lucky for us COOK photographer and Friend of Foobooz, Yoni Nimrod, was there to document it all.

Check out some of his snaps after the jump. And if they happen to pique your appetite, don’t forget that Herr Nolen will be hosting a class on modern German cuisine at COOK on Monday, February 18, and tickets are still available.

Beer vs. Wine Dinner at Brauhaus Schmitz

Posted by Jason Sheehan on November 14th, 2012

Yeah, there are a lot of pairing dinners out there these days. Wine pairings, beer pairings, whiskey and champagne and gin pairings. But one thing we haven’t seen yet? A pairing dinner turned into a battle between beer lovers and oenophiles, where the best pairing for each course will be chosen by the participants and winners chosen in the age-old fight between beer drinkers and winos.

At least not until now. On Tuesday, November 20, at Brauhaus Schmitz (advantage: beer), owner Doug Hager and chef Jeremy Nolen will be teaming up with gentleman of leisure Michael Solomonov and certified wine nerd Marnie Old (local wine consultant and author of He Said Wine, She Said Beer) to do a one-night-only Battle of the Booze. The deal is, five courses will be presented, paired with both a wine and a beer. Those in attendance will get to choose which pairing is the best and, one must assume, mock the loser.

Posted by Amanda Shulman on October 15th, 2012

And you thought Oktoberfest was over… Well, think again because Brauhaus Schmitz is bringing you Oktoberfest round two on Thursday, October 25th.

This time, Oktoberfest gets a little sweeter as the event will benefit the Center for Literacy to support education programs and services. But from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., $30 will get you BOTTOMLESS BEER. Ja, you read correctly–we said bottomless. Pick from 5 different drafts and fill those liters up. $10 of each ticket will go directly to the charity.
