The Cambridge on South Street will be hosting a spring pig roast on Sunday, May 19, in their outdoor courtyard. The event gets underway at 5 p.m. with suckling roasted pig and sides like farro salad and homemade cornbread and a nice Victory Summer Love draft for only $18.
The Cambridge will also have a few spring and summer draft favorites for $5, like 21st Amendment Hell or High Watermelon, Ithaca Apricot Wheat, Blue Point Spring Fling, Port Brewing Summer Pale Ake, Troegg’s and Sunshine Pils. The event will move inside around 9:30 p.m. when blues guitarist George Urgo takes the stage. Nothing can welcome spring quite like pig, beer, and blues, and you can get it all at The Cambridge this Sunday.

The Cambridge is hosing highly acclaimed Vermont brewery, Hill Farmstead Brewing tonight. Brewer Shaun Hill will be in the house as will the highly sought after Ephraim Imperial Pale Ale. Hill Farmstead is not doing any big Philly Beer Week events so if you want to sample a lot of their beers, tonight’s your night.

On Wednesday, March 6th at 4 p.m. Bell’s Brewery takes over all 24 taps at The Cambridge. The only firkin of Hopslam in the city will be among the beers pouring from the highly regarded Michigan brewery. And you can compare that firkin to the draft version, because there will be two Hopslams pouring.

The drinks are the thing at South Street’s The Cambridge. The food, well Craig LaBan has some issues there.
I might have loved the Asian-styled pulled pork sandwich called Sensei Kris had the tender shreds of confit-cooked pork not been reheated on the plancha to a crispy black. The towering meat loaf sandwich layered atop an onion-poppy roll with a fried egg? Burned to a char. Even the lightly curried cauliflower florets that accompanied the dry fillet of salmon were roasted briquette-black.

Today at 4 p.m., The Cambridge is putting up a tree, and like the champs that they are, they’ll be drinking while they do it. They’ll be tapping 12 different Christmas beers (actually 13, but 12 seems more befitting), and are extending their happy hour prices. Guests and neighbors are encouraged to bring their homemade and personalized ornaments, you know, to make it a little more homey on South Street.

Adam Erace reviews the Cambridge on South Street West and finds it to be a work in progress.
Beers took long. Food took longer. A shame, because both the Cambridge’s bar and the kitchen delivered during my visit, with dry, fizzy cider and tart cranberry lambic from the 24-deep draught system complementing sharable plates like housemade pierogies, poutine and pork belly with pickled fennel from chefs Matthew Plank (a Hawthorne’s transfer) and Jason VanderVossen. Grilled and pulled dark-meat chicken was charged with black pepper and lemon zest for one of several rotating fillings for those pierogies. The seasoned meat joined mashed potatoes and onions before being stuffed into sour-cream dough; crispy, buttery and drizzled with sticky balsamic, the pierogies might not win a Polish granny’s approval in Port Richmond, but on this revitalized stretch of South Street, they’re something to celebrate.

It was a sad day for many musicians and drinkers in Philadelphia when word came out last October that South Street dive bar/music venue Tritone was to close. Tritone was either an awesome or awful place to grab a drink or see a show, depending on your tastes, the volume of the band, and who was working the door. It was never a dining destination, though drunk food they did fairly well. Sometimes.

The Cambridge, the restaurant taking over The Tritone on South Street, is not quite ready for a grand opening just yet, but they are having a Beer Week event tomorrow night at 5 p.m. The Cambridge is opening up for one night only, serving a lineup of Maine Brewery draft beers.
After the event the Cambridge will go back under construction to tweak and touch up the rest of the space so that it will be ready to open for keeps later in the month.
