John Bucci Jr. is back at John’s Roast Pork. Five years ago Bucci faced leukemia and required a bone marrow transfer. Once given a 50/50 chance at survival he’s back at the grill and looking to give back.
This Saturday, June 8th from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. John’s Roast Pork will be holding bone-marrow registry drive and fund-raiser auction from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Registrants get $5 off a sandwich, which is donated to the cause.
Read Craig LaBan’s story in today’s Inquirer on Bucci’s recovery and for details on the Bruschetta Steak as well as Saturday’s fundraiser.

Philadelphia cheesesteak institution, Chink’s Steaks is dropping the controversial name the business has had since it opened in 1949. Joe Groh, who worked at Chink’s for twenty years before purchasing the business in 1999 is rebranding the spot as Joe’s Steaks + Soda Shop. Named for the original owner, Sam “Chink” Sherman, the name resonated for the man and not as a slur. But today, Groh says “it is very important to me, my family and the entire staff that we no longer inadvertently alienate anyone in the Philly community. We are very excited to move forward under the new name, Joe’s Steaks + Soda Shop.”
The new name also stresses the shop’s devotion to sodas, milkshakes and egg creams, which has been part of the business since its opening. Groh looks at the rebrand as a chance to create his own legacy, one he hopes to pass down to his son Patrick, who has been working at the cheesesteak shop since 2008.

The opening of a new, neighborhood cheesesteak joint? Not really news.
The opening of a new, neighborhood cheesesteak joint IN FRANCE? Definitely news.

Opening a cheesesteak joint in Nice, France isn’t so much breaking new ground for the Kobeitri family. It’s really something like a return…

It happened about two hours ago, but the new Tony Luke’s at King of Prussia Mall is now open for business (on the first floor, in the food court). And Tony Luke Jr. himself was there to cut the ribbon or scoop the whiz or whatever one does when one is in charge of christening a new cheesesteak joint.
According to the Tony Luke’s website, this newest incarnation of the South Philly original is the 14th Tony Luke’s to open (including one location in Bahrain), and there are three more coming–in Maple Shade, at the Tropicana and at the airport.

Michael Klein has the scoop on Northeast Philadelphia’s Steve’s Prince of Steaks taking over the former Krispy Kreme at 16th and Chestnut. The Northeast Philadelphia spot is often cited as one of the better cheesesteaks in town and there really isn’t a dedicated cheesesteak spot west of Broad.
No timeframe for the opening.
