Corner

It’s a sure sign that fall has arrived when restaurants release revamped menus for our eating delight. More often than not, however, these menus seem to revolve around the over-glorified pumpkin spice. Thankfully, The Corner has defied this trend with its recent menu additions.
Staying true to American Cuisine, chef John Taus has provided a home-inspired, seasonally appropriate menu, sans the pumpkin. Old favorites like Tuesday’s Chicken Pot Pie return and are joined by a Saturday special of Roasted Lamb Leg served with fennel potato gratin, mint gremolata, and golden raisins.

Tucked inside HughE Dillon’s roundup of Feastival is this nugget:
Tony [Rim] are just about a month away from opening their new project, the Corner Foodery at 1710 Sansom Street. They’ll carry over 800 gourmet beers from around the country and serve simple sandwiches with cured meats by Corner chef John Taus.
This collaboration was first mentioned back in May of 2007 but no one has been talking about it since. We’re intrigued to say the least and imagine our lunch hours will soon be taken up by staring at the rows of beers wooing us from their coolers.

Sure, you could go to Wawa at 7 a.m. to wrestle an icing-slathered and probably stale doughnut out of another commuter’s grubby hands to get your morning sugar rush. Or, you could wait for the dessert menu after dinner at one of Philadelphia’s finest restaurants for a twist on the breakfast staple.
If you’re bored with the same old Boston Cream check out these six restaurants serving up daring and delicious dessert dougnuts.

In protest of the recent foie gras troubles in California (where a complete Nanny State ban on foie gras is due to take effect on July 1), Philadelphia chefs are teaming up to support their West Coast brethren in fighting the good fight. In order to bring a little light and make a little noise, chefs like Jason Cichonski of Ela have called on their colleagues to bring foie gras to the people.
The result? Foie Fridays. And the first one is tomorrow.

Someone recently commented on Foobooz that The Corner on 13th Street deserved more buzz and we couldn’t agree more. The fried jalapeño cream cheese balls, the popcorn crusted shrimp (pictured), the lobster pot pie and bacon wrapped pork tenderloin all are reasons to stop in to sample John Taus’ cooking. The happy hour deals from 5 to 7 p.m. are another reason.
