Vendy Awards 2012

Posted by Aubrey Nagle on June 28th, 2012

The Second Annual Vendy Awards have been scheduled for Saturday, July 28th. At The Lot at 39th and Market, food writer Joy Manning and chef Marcie Turney will be judging 8-10 street food vendors nominated by the great people of Philadelphia in a sidewalk cook off. The general public can buy tickets to the event to enjoy food and beer all while supporting The Food Trust through fundraising.

The Vendy Awards started out in NYC in 2005 and they were so successful that cities like Philadelphia and Los Angeles have picked up their own. Last year the winner of the Philly Vendy Cup was Gigi and Big R and the People’s Choice went to Cucinca Zapata while SweetBox took home the Dessert prize. Nominate your favorite food truck or sidewalk cart today to show your appreciation for your daily lunch spot. And buy your tickets at the Vendy website fast, the event is sure to sell out — and even if there were any left at the door, they cost more.

Around the Web: New Spots

Posted by Foobooz on August 19th, 2011

We’re going to try and make our Around the Web feature a more reliable feature that will run every Friday. Today we focus on some newer spots around town.

Santucci’s has recently opened at 10th and Christian and the early reports are good. Foodzings is quite impressed with the zesty sauce, just right crust and gigantic meatballs. [Foodzings]

The Beer Lass also checks out the meatballs and pizza with similar praise. The Beer Lass’ beau remarked that the pizza is exceptional. [Beer Lass]

Penn Appétit checks out the recent Thai-Mexican food truck, Cucina Zapata and finds some “delectable bargains.” [Penn Appetit]

Madame Fromage has us wanting to check out Wedge and Fig. Just look at the size of that cheese. [Madame Fromage]

Midtown Lunch finds the naan and lunch dishes are much more inspired than the name at Indian Restaurant. [Midtown Lunch]

Living on the Vedge wishes Sawatdee had dialed up the spice a bit but will be back to further explore the menu. [Living on the Vedge]

Philly’s Vendy Awards Nominations Announced

Posted by Jason Sheehan on June 30th, 2011

The Vendys are coming! The Vendys are coming!

Yes, folks, the Vendy Awards–a beloved New York City tradition since 2005, honoring the very best purveyors of truck, cart and streetcorner cuisine–have now been loosed on our fair city. On Saturday, July 9, from 3pm-7pm at the Piazza at Schmidts, all the greatest street-food operators in town will be gathering to serve up their best tacos/curry/BBQ/falafel in an attempt to impress a panel of celebrity judges and be named among the best of Philly’s sidewalk chefs. Of course, they’ll also be serving grub for the masses (and in the process collecting money for The Food Trust, a non-profit that tries to give everyone access to good, healthy food) which is why you’ll want to be there. I mean, where else are you going to be able to find Guapos Tacos, Sweet Box, King of Falafel and Cucina Zapata all together in one place at one time?

Up until June 10, the folks behind the Vendys have been taking public nominations in order to determine Philly’s street-food finalists. And just today, they released their list of the 8 most beloved vendors working the streets of our fair metropolis. These 8 will be gathering at the appointed place, on the appointed hour, to do noble battle before their adoring fans. And when all is said and done, one of them will be going home with the coveted Vendy Cup and joining the ranks of such streetcorner luminaries as Calexio Carne Asada, NY Dosa, Sammy’s Halal and King of Falafel (New York version).

So do you want to know who’ll be battling it out this year in Philly?
