Free Cheesesteak Spring Rolls At Davio’s

Posted by Jason Sheehan on January 9th, 2013

cheesesteakspringrolls

Yeah, the cold weather in Philly can really suck. But you know what might make it a little nicer? Free food, hot from the Friolator.

Starting today (which is not really all that cold), Davio’s is offering a deal to get you out into the cold. On any day where the temperatures drop below freezing (that’s 32 degrees fahrenheit for those of you who failed high school chemistry), all you have to do is head to the bar at Davio’s, show the bartender your phone with proof that the weather truly does suck the required amount, and he or she will bring you a free order of fancy-pants cheesesteak spring rolls from the kitchen.

The deal is only good Monday–Friday 11:30am–2:30pm and 5:00pm–11:00pm, and only works if you’re in the bar area, but frankly, Davio’s has a really nice bar, so that’s no hardship. What’s more, they’ve got those nice windows so you can look down into the street and see all the poor suckers out there not tucked away in a warm bar eating free spring rolls. Take that, everybody who’s not you!

Around The Web: Secret Suppers

Posted by Jason Sheehan on September 18th, 2012

An Irish cheesesteak, foie-kebabs, Nutella pizza and a simple plate of spaghetti at a restaurant known for somewhat more complicated presentations–these are just a few of the secret plates uncovered by Grub Street Philly in an excellent investigation that hit the interwebs this afternoon.

There are a million dishes in the naked city, but not all of them are listed on menus. And there’s no single answer why chefs and restaurateurs keep these secrets. Some are things that were replaced in menu updates, but remain tastes that loyal customers can’t live with out; other are simply special plates reserved for celebrities, high rollers and dearly loved regulars.

So check it out, won’t you? All 8 of the plates that made Grub’s list sound like they would make an excellent dinner tonight. Though something tells me you might not be the only fella in the dining room looking for those foie kebabs…

Davio’s Beating the Heat With Booze

Posted by Foobooz on June 19th, 2012

If the weathermen and their dire predictions of spontaneous combustion are to be believed, Philadelphia is in for a scorcher of a week with temperatures topping 100 degrees. Thankfully, there is a clever pastry chef in town (Thomas Heck fromDavio’s) who has decided to do something about it. On Wednesday and Thursday (the days which are supposed to be the hottest), he’ll be making alcohol-spiked ice pops to help folks keep cool–or to just get drunk enough not to notice the heat.

They’ll be offered in three varieties: Prosecco and rose petal with a splash of orange juice, watermelon and mint with vodka, and pina colada. The kitchen will be letting the ice pops go for $5 apiece, and will only be serving them from 11am to 3pm, tomorrow and Thursday.

Six Pack: Philadelphia’s Zombie-Proof Restaurants

Posted by Jason Sheehan on May 30th, 2012

In the wake of yesterday’s zombie attack in Miami, I’ve been thinking (as I often do) about the inevitable zombie apocalypse. And when I get to thinking about the inevitable zombie apocalypse, my thoughts often turn to practical questions like: When the worst finally happens, where would I hole up for a final drink? Or, when feeling somewhat less fatalistic, what restaurants in Philadelphia would be best for weathering an invasion of the undead?

Thus, as a public service, the Foobooz Zombie Defense Working Group has come up with a list of the 6 best restaurants in Philadelphia for witnessing (and possibly surviving) a zombie attack.

You’re welcome.

Professional Food Writer/Tie Wearer John Mariani Coming To Davio’s

Posted by Tara Nurin on May 18th, 2012

John Mariani wears a tie and jacket when he goes to dinner. Every dinner. The restaurant columnist for Esquire is a one-man barricade against the onslaught of informality in 21st century dining.

Case in point: When I met him at a media conference in Pittsburgh in 2009, he told me he was planning a trip to Philly to review several restaurants for his annual 20 Best New Restaurants feature. He invited me, then an aspiring food writer, to meet him not by way of the usual “Do you want to join me?” but instead, “Would you care to dine with me?” It’s perhaps the most regal question I’ve ever answered yes to.

We had dinner at the defunct Maia in Villanova (thumbs down) then lunched the following day at Table 31, where Georges hugged him warmly and gave us a tour through the kitchen. It’s a good thing Georges left before our waiter carelessly poured red wine into a glass that was already 1/3 full of white, or Philadelphia might have witnessed its first public execution in modern history. Neither Maia nor Table 31 made the list that year but Zahav and Distrito, where he “dined” after we bid adieu, did.

Six Pack: Non-Traditional Cheesesteaks in Philadelphia

Posted by Foobooz on March 26th, 2012

 Cheesesteak Egg Rolls

Ahh, the cheesesteak. The most defining symbol of Philadelphia’s food scene, whether we like it or not. It’s sometimes tacky, xenophobic, touristy and lackluster, and that’s just 9th and Passyunk. But it is uniquely Philadelphia, and we do it better than anyone else.

Here are six spots making non-traditional cheesesteaks, hold the wiz.
