Robert’s Market Report points us to the jarring news that there is a broccoli and broccoli rabe shortage in the United States. Drought conditions in the Southwest United States has demand outstripping supply.
According to the Reading Terminal’s Iovine Bros., the shortage is expected to last a good four or five weeks. And with the Philadelphia Auto Show descending on the Reading Terminal Market, all those Dinic’s sandwiches might be missing their signature greens.

The Philadelphia Inquirer dedicated 690 words to DiNic’s decision to change bread providers from Carangi to Sarcone’s? Why? Because its that freaking important. The roast pork sandwich at DiNic’s in the Reading Terminal Market was recently named the best sandwich in America by Adam Richman.
Over the past couple of months the stand has been serving up both Carangi and Sarcone’s. Yesterday was the first all Sarcone’s day at DiNic’s. What does it mean for business? Sarcone’s is looking at delivering more than 1200 rolls on a “moderately busy” day.

Today is DiNic’s first day in its new Reading Terminal Market stall. The new location at the former Harry Ochs spot off the center court should deal with the throngs a bit better and counter seating expands from 11 to 18 seats.
DiNic’s is just the first domino to fall in the Reading Terminal shuffle. Next up Spataro’s moves to DiNic’s old spot. Flying Monkey takes over Spataro’s and L. Halterman and Sons also shifts. This all will make space for the Rick Nichols Room as well as new vendors for the venerable market.
Messy and Picky has a good photo of the new space from the close of business yesterday.

If you’ve been in the Reading Terminal Market in the past few weeks you may have seen some of these renderings posted around the market. They include the new and larger DiNic’s that will be opening where Harry Ochs stand was located.
There are also renderings of the other stalls that are shifting and getting a face lift including the new Molly Malloy’s which is replacing the tired Beer Garden. Malloy’s also has gotten its social media in order with a new Facebook page and Twitter account. The gastropub is owned by the Iovine Brothers and is aiming to open on October 11th. The bar will offer its own food and beer for eat-in or takeout. Happy hour will be offered daily from 4 to 6 p.m.

In case you missed it, there’s a new BBQ restaurant on South Street, from the folks who brought you Zahav, Marigold, and Xochitl. The team visited a disgusting amount of ’cue joints in Texas to get their meat right (a story expertly told here by food editor Ashley Primis, who accompanied the carnivorous lot on their research trip). But a man can only eat so much meat. He needs something to wash it all down. So I paid a visit to Percy Street to sample their drinks.
