Dogfish-Head

Grey Lodge does it right. They have a calendar filled with worthwhile events, and they’re always rotating through some bad-ass beers.
Take for example today, May 3rd, when they’ll be tapping eight Dogfish Head beers, all of them season or occasional brews (except for the 60 Minute, but you can’t not have the 60 Minute), and all of them delicious.

Dogfish Head Brewery, the artists of all things hops, has teamed up with Sierra Nevada to create a collaboration IPA called the Rhizing Bines, and to celebrate, chef Mike Deganis of Alla Spina has created a four-course pairing dinner to pair with it, as well as four other Dogfish Head beers. The IPA diversity bursting out of the Dogfish pipes is really quite impressive and this IPA seems to be something special—so special, it’s got its own specially designed glass.
The dinner is tonight, and it’s $60 a head, which includes five beers, four courses, and you get to keep the IPA glass. There are revolving seatings from 6-8:30 pm, call or book online to make a reservation.

We’re not really sure why everyone decided today was the day to pour some great beer but we’re not complaining. Tria Rittenhouse and Tria Washington Square West are pouring Dogfish Head 120 Minute IPA today at 4 p.m. The Delaware brewery’s 120 Minute IPA is an extreme beer, weighing in at 18% alcohol by volume. Tria will be offering the beer for $5 a five-ounce glass, limit two per customer.

Patrick McGovern may just be the coolest Philadelphian you’ve never heard of. His title, Scientific Director of the Penn Museum’s Biomolecular Archaeology Laboratory, sounds all wonky and boring, sure, but what that means is the dude plays with ancient booze molecules all day. Not only does he travel the world studying remnants of alcoholic beverages found in archeological digs, but brother man played Dr. Watson to Dogfish Head owner Sam Calagione’s Sherlock Holmes on the Discovery Channel series “Brew Masters” that had the two traipsing around the globe to recreate beers from antiquity.
All of this is to say that no true beer geek or boozehound with a drop of intellectual curiosity can pass to the next level of elitism without either reading McGovern’s books about the history of wine, beer and spirits or attending an event he’s hosting. Because there are no Cliffs Notes or movie versions of his tomes (at least not to our knowledge), you’d perhaps be best getting the shorthand straight from McGovern’s mouth, and you have the opportunity to do just that tonight from 6:30-9:30pm at Camden County College (CCC) in Blackwood, NJ.

How do you keep from letting rainy Mondays get you down? You head to Tria’s Spruce Street location where they’re tapping beers from two of their favorite breweries. Dogfish Head’s Bitches Brew returns. It’s three parts Imperial Stout and one part African honey beer with gesho root, and commemorate the Miles Davis’s fusion jazz album of the same name.
Tria is also tapping a rare keg of Russian River Temptation. Temptation is a strong golden ale aged in French Chardonnay casks with wild yeasts and makes beer dorks squeal.
It all starts at 4 p.m. Dogfish Head Bitches Brew is $8 for a 10 ounce draft and Russian River Temptation is $8.50 for a 10 ounce draft.
