The Cambridge on South Street will be hosting a spring pig roast on Sunday, May 19, in their outdoor courtyard. The event gets underway at 5 p.m. with suckling roasted pig and sides like farro salad and homemade cornbread and a nice Victory Summer Love draft for only $18.
The Cambridge will also have a few spring and summer draft favorites for $5, like 21st Amendment Hell or High Watermelon, Ithaca Apricot Wheat, Blue Point Spring Fling, Port Brewing Summer Pale Ake, Troegg’s and Sunshine Pils. The event will move inside around 9:30 p.m. when blues guitarist George Urgo takes the stage. Nothing can welcome spring quite like pig, beer, and blues, and you can get it all at The Cambridge this Sunday.

Playboy (yes, that Playboy) has announced its list of the best bars in the country and Philadelphia’s own Franklin Mortgage & Investment Co. has made the cut. Under the four categories named on the list (Dive Bars, Seduction Spots, Classics and Mixology), the Franklin came in under “Mixology” (of course), sharing space with nine other joints where the cocktail is king.
All told, Playboy’s editors named about forty bars, and the Franklin shared space with some serious national heavy hitters like The Violet Hour and Aviary in Chicago, Sazerac in New Orleans, and Drink in Boston. Playboy had much to say on the Franklin’s classic aesthetic:
Named for the company that served as the front for what was once the largest illicit booze ring in the country, this establishment is an homage to the pre-Prohibition era: the style, architecture, music, even the lightbulbs—and, yes, the drinks.
Cheers to you, Franklin Mortgage.

Deva Watson, a server at Pub & Kitchen has recently been hired to teach art at a charter school in Southwest Philadelphia. Unfortunately her classroom needs some help, so Deva has signed on the sustainable company Greensaw Design and Build to create a new classroom pro bono. But after losing state funding for the initial costs, Deva has to find a new way to raise the money, all while working 80 hour weeks between teaching and serving to cover art supply costs.
Enter Pub & Kitchen owner Ed Hackett. He has offered to hold one of P&K’s Bring Your Own Vinyl nights with all proceeds benefitting the build of Deva’s classroom. For the fundraiser, which is on Monday, August 6th at 9 p.m , Sixpoint Brewery has been nice enough to donate a keg of P&K Pale Ale. Those beers will be $3 and Heaven Hill shots will be $5. So drink up, it’s for the kids!
In the meantime, check out Deva’s project and donate to her at http://www.indiegogo.com/mydivingbell.

Just in time for the hottest days of the season Garces Trading Co. is offering a twist on summer cocktails. Beverage manager Brandon Thomas has created three hand-bottled fizzy cocktails to serve to the dine-in guests at GTC.
Each cocktail is mixed, frozen to 30 degrees, and carbonated before being hand-bottled with Garces Trading Co. caps. When ordered each individual glass bottle is poured into properly garnished glasses and served for $12. Thomas will create new flavors and combinations for each season.

While New Yorkers shudder at the thought of Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s proposed ban on large servings of sodas and sugary drinks, we Philadelphians are prepared to let all the soda addicts cry on our shoulders. More importantly, we are also prepared to brag about the limitless bottles of craft soda that we have on hand throughout this great city at any point in time. At these six Philly establishments you can find a plethora of flavors in as many ounces as your heart desires.
Stings a bit, doesn’t it NYC?
Hey, if you’re nice we may even let you have some. But only, like, 12 oz or so.

What goes best with pumpkin pie? Pumpkin brandy, obviously. Jonn Klein, owner of Bella Vista bar, The Dive, has whipped up another batch of his famous pumpkin brandy, which I wrote about last year:
It’s made with real pumpkin—not the canned stuff—plus a healthy dose of rum, vodka and brandy spiced with nutmeg and clove. Served warm, this mellow beverage is evocative of an exceptional pumpkin pie.
He’s only made 10 gallons, so it’s available for as long as it lasts. $5 a glass.

In my little food world, where I serve as chief cook, bottle washer and benevolent dictator, I do not permit flavored vodkas. I am against them, I don’t believe in them and I shun them. Unless they are free, in which case I will drink them happily. Did I mention this was my little food world? I make the rules here. Don’t argue with me.
Of course, as a dictator – even a benevolent one – I can turn on a dime. I must have whims and they must be catered to! So I’m upending my flavored vodka ban for one product only:
