A couple interesting beers are out there tonight. Grid Magazine’s release party at Johnny Brenda’s will feature a firkin of Vanilla Love Stout from Yards.

And in Mt. Airy Earth Bread + Brewery is unveiling Cuvée de Cliveden, a beer they’ve created with the help of the Cliveden Brewers club. Each glass sold benefits the Cliveden mansion’s educational efforts.

Beer Love from NYT

Posted by Kirsten Henri on January 19th, 2009

This weekend, the New York Times discovered that THERE IS A MAGNIFICENT CRAFT BEER CULTURE IN PHILADELPHIA! Of course, we have known this all along, but getting a shout-out in the Times makes it more likely that our out-of-town friends will actually believe us when we tell them about it.:

Much of the upswing can be attributed to Philadelphia’s bubbling night life. The new breweries, said Don Russell, who as Joe Sixpack writes a weekly column about beer for The Philadelphia Daily News, “are filling a need that’s out there being created by the local bar scene. Every single bar that has been opening up has a multitap system and is featuring microbrews.”

Combine that robust tavern scene with cheap real estate in emerging neighborhoods, and you’ve got the ingredients for a beer blast. In recent years, a half-dozen breweries and specialty pubs have opened in Philadelphia, ranging from boutique breweries that make micro batches to green-powered plants looking to become the city’s next biggest thing.

We knew that cheap real estate was good for something. EBB, Yards, and Dock Street are all name-checked in the article.

Earth, Bread + Brews

Earth Bread + Brewery Pizza

Craig LaBan knows there isn’t a much better combination than pizza and beer and he makes his way out to Earth Bread + Brewery to sample Tom Baker’s  experimental brews and thin crisp pizzas.

There are definitely some choices worth visiting for, including the “Traditional” take on a Margherita, its zesty sauce topped with mozzarella and fresh arugula tufted in the middle. The Mexican adds a jalapeño- and smoked-paprika tingle to the tomato sauce, which also gets the pop of roasted black beans and corn. But the most memorable bread here is the “Seed,” a sauceless cheese round scattered with enough crunchies – sesame, pumpkin seeds, pine nuts, and garlic (whoa, lots of garlic!) – to make a Weaver’s Way bulk-bin groupie go weak in the knees.

Earth Bread + Brewery is going under the C. LaBan microscope this Sunday. It didn’t fare so well in yesterday’s Philadelphia Weekly, how will it do in the Inky?

Earth Over Bread

Posted by Foobooz on January 7th, 2009

Earth Bread + Brewery

Adam Erace visits Mt. Airy’s new “village green,” Earth Bread + Brewery. Erace is impressed with EB+B’s environmental awareness but less so with its pizzas.

Earth’s pizzaoilas use King Arthur flour for the flatbread dough, which imparts a wholesome aroma and flavor, but what’s on top brought them down: squash and eggplant roasted to mush, bland cubes of potato that added little to a pesto-dressed pie. The black bean-and-corn-studded Mexican was the exception, deceptively spicy from its jalapeño-and-smoked- paprika-spiked marinara.
