Noir in South Philadelphia is celebrating the unofficial start of summer by debuting their new lemon, chocolate, and cherry Italian ice cocktails. The frozen drinks are made with ingredients from two of Noir’s East Passyunk neighbors. Mancuso’s water ice is combined with Pollyodd’s lemoncello, chocolatecello and a house infused cherry noir vodka. All are garnished with the traditional water ice accompaniment, a pretzel rod. Each cocktail is $6.

Le Virtu’s recently redesigned outdoor dining area is officially reopening (they’ve been serving outdoors for about a month now) this Sunday, May 19th with a festive event and new dishes from chef Joe Cicala. The outdoor area has been paved with stones and bordered with shrubery that should soon be blossoming. In the rear of the space is a wooden canopy with clingin vines and attractive lighting. The canopy will eventually offer a small counter for guests to sit around to enjoy drinks and host special chef’s table dinners.paved with ivory-hued stone and bordered with smaller landscaping stones and lush shrubbery which will soon blossom.
This Sunday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Le Virtu will be hosting a gathering on the patio. Cicala will be serving Le Virtu soup, the restaurant’s namesake spring soup of 49-ingredients. Grilled Arrosticini (lamb skewers), grilled sausage and vegetables plus wine from the new tap wine system. Tickets cost $45 per person and include food and beverges.
Inside, Cicala’s latest menu additions will be served.

Saturday was the Flavors of the Avenue on East Passyunk and it served as the first chance many people have had to try the food of Joncarl Lachman and his upcoming NOORD. Lachman was serving up a mini-herring sandwich (pictured above) with cucumber and pickled onion. Lachman told us the sandwich is the Dutch equivalent to the hot dog. And after one tour around the twenty-five restaurant strong festival, we found ourselves back in front of NOORD’s stand and couldn’t help but get another bite.
NOORD is aiming to open on or near Wednesday, May 8th. NOORD is at 1046 Tasker Street, just off of the singing fountain, across from Fond.

Trey Popp reviews Sophia’s, the East Passyunk restaurant of Philadelphia’s prodigal son, Christopher Lee. What he finds is that Lee is only kind of involved.
My dinners—all of them—were incoherent and error-prone. Dishes clashed rather than complementing one another. Most of the “fun”-sounding ones were flat and boring. Carelessness afflicted too many others. Brussels sprouts were overcooked (really half-carbonized). Ice creams came in pools of their own melt. There’s a lovely apple coffee cake from Fond’s Jessie Prawlucki—but one night it turned up fridge-cold, in a kiln-hot bowl, after an inexplicably long wait.
Sophia’s spent its first month tinkering with a menu the restaurant abruptly discarded. It’s hard to imagine this second take will last much longer. And who knows? A third stab could be the charm. But for Christopher Lee to resurrect the hopes some people had for his return to Philadelphia, he’ll need to do something to reverse the impression that he’s really just phoning it in.

New Jersey Fluke with Black-Truffle Scallop Mousse / Artichoke / Meyer Lemon
Chris Kearse has rolled out the spring menu at his Will on East Passyunk and it reads like a spring ingredient bingo board. If you’ve got rhubarb, meyer lemon and ramps in a row, you’re a winner (you’re also look to be a winner if you have reservations).

Chef Elijah Milligan continues to put his mark on the menu at Stateside. Late, last week Milligan rolled out his mid-Spring main menu. Among the items that caught our eye; seared foie gras with whiskey French toast, grilled grapes and ice wine vinegar; veal sweetbreads and Stateside Stew, a stew of rotating house-made sausage, fresh fish and shellfish plus vegetables.

Native Philadelphian Johncarl Lachman is coming home to Philadelphia to open Noord, a BYOB on East Passyunk Avenue. Tuesday night, Samuel Sherman, executive director of the East Passyunk Revitalization Corporation gave members of the media a preview of the Noord space. It still looks very raw inside but Sherman asures us that the 40-plus-seat restaurant with open kitchen will be ready to open the first week of May.
The design of the restaurant will be slightly reminiscent of Fond’s redo (especially the exterior), also an East Passyunk Revitalization project but will feature a large communal table down the middle of restaurant. Lachman will cook and interact with guests from Noord’s open kitchen. Outdoor seating will also be available.

Kris Restaurant has closed, hand is now becoming part of the Munish Narula empire. The restaurant’s Facebook page says that all gift certificates will be honored at owner Kristian Leuzzi’s, Stogie Joe’s on East Passyunk.
Also in South Philadelphia, paper is up in the windows at Queen Village’s Village Belle and no online reservations are available before Friday, April 5th.
Lou Campanaro, chef/owner of the Village Belle tells us it’s some spring cleaning that will include a new look for the bar and prep work for the outdoor cafe.
Campanaro also tells us the menu is being reformatted to focus on small plates with small prices. The wine and cocktail lists are also being revamped and four new taps are being added.
Village Belle is aiming to reopen this Thursday or Friday and will have Allagash White, Victory Swing Sesion Saison, Goose Island IPA and Flying Fish Farmhouse Ale on tap.
