The annual Rittenhouse Row Spring Festival is this Saturday, May 18, from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.. The festival extends from Walnut Street from Broad to 19th and on 18th Street, from Locust to Sansom. Over 40 of the areas best restaurants will be serving up their cuisine for your enjoyment at an affordable price. Some highlights of the participating restaurants include a. Kitchen, Barclay Prime, Continental Mid-town, Di Bruno Bros., El Rey, Le Bec Fin, Oyster House, Parc, Sbraga, Shake Shack, Vernick, and Village Whiskey.
If that doesn’t make you want go, maybe this will; there will be a tasting area with 20 of the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board’s Chairman’s Selection wines with a concierge and on-site store.
Other stands will offer Peroni beer, Rex Goliath wines, Cintron, and cocktails. Also, there will be cooking demonstration at 19th and Walnut courtesy of Starr Restaurants. The great food, booze, shopping, activities and weather make the Rittenhouse Row Spring Festival a can’t miss.

Appetite for Awareness, the signature event of the National Foundation for Celiac Awareness, is coming to Philadelphia on Sunday September 23rd from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Strawbridge Building. The event is in its eighth year and continually brings together physicians and chefs from the area’s top restaurants to serve up information and gluten-free dishes.

This year’s Stephen Starr-Garry Maddox BBQ Challenge returns to Citizens Bank Park on Saturday August 11th. For the eleventh year Philly’s biggest restaurateur and Phillies legend, Garry Maddox team up for the ultimate grill-off. Restaurant teams from Starr’s line up and other local venues will compete against each other, and in the pit master division BBQ enthusiasts will face off, all for bragging rights to the best barbecue. This day of friendly competition ends in the winner-takes-all Garry’s Rib Challenge, where the prize is tickets to the 2012 World Series.

Happy Weed Day, everyone!
Yes, today is April 20th and as every college student, Phish fan, trust-fund hippie, glaucoma patient and resident of Boulder, Colorado knows, April 20th is a very special day on the calendar. It’s a day for celebrating the joys of nature’s bounty, a kind of harvest festival for the dreadlocked and tie-dyed. It’s a holiday most commonly observed by getting totally weird on the pot and pretending like your public consumption of said hippie lettuce has a political bent by wearing t-shirts demanding the immediate legalization of the thing you’re openly smoking in the middle of a public park on a Wednesday afternoon.
As reported by Grub Street earlier this afternoon, Domino’s apparently knows full well what 4/20 means and has released a one-day-only Groupon which will get peckish weed enthusiasts still capable of operating a phone a 10-topping pizza for just $8. And while that’s all well and good (we can’t imagine anyone but a gang of very stoned liberal arts majors and drum circle attendees even considering a 10-topping pizza–or eating anything from Domino’s, period), we here at Foobooz HQ put our heads together and decided that, as a service to some of our more gastronomically picky (but still super-stoned) readers, we’d come up with a list of some of the best ways for the discriminating stoner to take the edge off his or her munchies this evening.

Last week we profiled several Day of the Dead celebrations at various Philadelphia restaurants. Here they all are again in one place.
Distrito – Tomorrow there is a Herradura Tequila dinner upstairs and street food specials and DJs downstairs.
El Camino Real – Tonight’s tasting dinner will feature four Patron cocktails.
El Rey – Stephen Starr’s Chestnut Street Mexican restaurant is creating a Day of the Dead altar which will be on display until November 2nd. Diners will also receive Mexican candies at the end of their meal.
Xochitl – Tuesday’s Day of the Dead celebration features heart tacos and more on the special 5-course menu.

Trey Popp files his first review for Philadelphia Magazine, his inaugural target, El Rey. Popp doesn’t find big mistakes but only a couple of items that are worth raving about.
The outstanding stuffed poblano pepper, a carryover from Xochitl, rides waves of flavor – a splash of creamy walnut sauce, a spray of almonds, then a dried-fruit-and-cinnamon-scented tide of beef, whose sweetness recedes as tart bursts of pomegranate punctuate the slow burn of the chili. Sucking his mole negro – an alchemy of anchos, mulatos and chilhuacles – off of slow-cooked lamb cubes is like plunging through a column of chili smoke into a cauldron of chocolate-dusted tobacco leaves. It’s as black as sin, as pungent as heartache, as mysterious as redemption.
