Gavin’s Cafe at 26th and Pine is hosting another Empanada Fest today. From 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. the empanadas will be coming heavy. But as much as we love empanadas, don’t sleep on the Maicenitas, an Argentine cookie sandwiche with Dulce de Leche filling.

One could argue that the two best things in the world are meat and fried food. If you are the type of person who would make such an argument, then feast your eyes on the empanada.
The empanada is a crispy pastry stuffed with meat, cheese, fruit, or anything in between, depending on the chef. Most typically served in Latin cuisine, the empanada can count as a small snack or an appetizer leading up to a gut-busting meal.
Luckily for you, Philadelphia has several options to satisfy any one of your empanada cravings.

My bad karma empanada curse continues. Today, comes word that Cuba Libre’s late-night empanada bodega, Empanada Alley will not open next Friday. Turns out neighbors are concerned that the after hours empanada stand would bring too much noise to Strawberry Street between Second and Third Streets in Old City.
Alma Cuba owner Barry Gutin says “We recently learned there are a few families living in the buildings surrounding our back door, including one with a set of 10-month-old twins, whose sleep we do not wish to disturb.” Gutin will feature the concept as a mobile stand going forward. Follow @EmpAlley for details.

In conjunction with National Empanada Day on Sunday, April 8 (take a back seat Easter), Chef-Partner Guillermo Pernot of Cuba Libre is opening Empanada Alley, a late-night spot located at the back of the Old City restaurant on Strawberry Street. Every Friday and Saturday throughout April, from midnight until 3 a.m., the restaurant will serve up $3 empanadas in the converted kitchen space, reminiscent of a bodega.

We’ve mentioned before that we just love empanadas. So anytime we hear that a new spot is offering our favorite savory turnover, we celebrate. Fishtown’s Sketch Burger is now offering homemade empanadas, with a variety of fillings. Chef/owner Phyllis Farquhar is making crispy, crunchy empanadas with fillings of everything from chipotle chicken to jerked seitan. The empanadas are only $3.50 a piece and come with sauces like mango chutney, Harissa aioli, and vegan Caribbean green sauce.

Once upon a time there was a restaurant just off of South Street that served up the most wonderful empanadas. I was a regular, spending date nights, one New Year’s Eve and as many other nights as I could afford, scarfing down the delightful crisped turnovers as well as the always excellent steak and seafood. Then Azafran’s owner Susanna Goihman ran down and killed a teenager while under the influence. It was clear that Azafran’s days were numbered. But some friends and I decided we had to go one last time for some sort of Bad Karma Last Supper. Goihman wasn’t there and we over-tipped our soon to be unemployed server as we attempted to balance the cosmos.
