It has been five years since Donal McCoy and Neil Laughlin purchased Old City bar institution Sassafras, and the restaurant is celebrating with a party today, Thursday, May 16. The festivities get under way at 5 p.m. with five dollar food and drink specials, like hibiscus mojitos and beer battered fish bites. The party really gets going at 6 p.m. when Philadelphia rocker Kenn Kweder takes the stage. This should be a fun celebration worth checking out at one of Philly’s classic bars.

BAR and Awesome Dudes Printing are holding a food drive that has a concept that we’re digging. You give them canned foods, they give you canned beer. With the Thanksgiving season coming around, show your holiday spirit by dropping some canned goods off at Bar at 1309 Sansom Street or at Awesome Dudes Printing at 6th and Reed. In return, they’ll show you some thanks with a can of beer. You’re limited to one can of beer per day, so its only an incentive to come back the next day and donate some more. When the food drive is over at the end of November, they’ll ride their motorcycles to Preston and Steve’s Camp Out for Hunger in Plymouth Meeting and drop off the donations, with all the food collected going to Philabundance. You’re giving back, and they’re thanking you in boozy fashion. Sounds like our kind of food drive.

With that mustache, he’d fit right in in Fishtown
This year marks 100 years since the death of famous Philadelphia architect Frank Furness. Furness’ designs were bold and eccentric during his life, and have since become revered not only in Philadelphia, but wherever his designs were produced. He was greatly influenced by the industrial designers of his day, often combining materials in new ways and designing on a scale meant to dazzle and break with the norm. Other famous architects like Louis Sullivan, who studied under Furness, and Frank Lloyd Wright were strongly influenced by his designs. Many of his important buildings, like the University of Pennsylvania Fisher Library and Drexel’s Paul Peck Center, still stand throughout Philadelphia–some housing popular restaurants.
