It isn’t just the Best 50 Restaurants in Philadelphia on the pages of Philadelphia magazine this month. There’s also a profile by Jason Fagone of Fergus Carey, the man who made Fergie’s and Monk’s legendary.
Almost every night, Fergie is on the premises of one pub or another, sweeping the floor, hyping the band. He greets his repeat customers warmly, asking after their wives and parents and cats, and if he doesn’t know a person’s name, he makes sure to learn it. Other pub owners do that, too, but Fergie is just better at it. His mental Rolodex includes many hundreds of Philadelphia drinkers. And it’s reciprocal: Thousands of Philadelphia drinkers know who Fergus Carey is. He isn’t the most famous person in the city, but he may be the most uncomplicatedly beloved. When he walks in the city, it takes him 45 minutes to go two blocks, because people are always shouting his name, stopping him, telling him stories and jokes. It drives his two young kids nuts.

The ten day marathon that is Philly Beer Week has finally ended. We were out there from the Hammer of Glory relay right through the The Totally Unnecessary Drink at Fergie’s last night. And yes, it was totally unnecessary. Our bodies aren’t particularly happy with us but we have survived.
We of course didn’t get to nearly as many events as we had hoped but the ones we did get to were well organized and well attended. Among the many standout beers we sampled, the official collaboration beer by Iron Hill brewer Chris LaPierre and by Olivier DeDeycker of the famed Brasserie Dupont lived up to its hype. As did our first tries of several new local breweries including West Chester’s Box Car Brewing. Their mango ginger IPA was a memorable one during Opening Tap.
But we’re interested in what you most enjoyed about Beer Week. And of course in Philadelphia, every week is Beer Week. Check out #pbwleftovers on Twitter for more great beer that didn’t get kicked during Beer Week.

Fergus “Fergie” Carey is bartending this evening at Fergie’s Pub from 6 to 8pm. It is a fundraiser for Brat Productions of which Fergie is the board president. All tips will be matched by the Wyncote Foundation and there will be barbecue fare to try for free.
After the fundraiser comes the wake for writer Charles Bukowski. There will be Bukowski quizzo, Bukowski poetry readings and certainly plenty of drunken debauchery.

Mark Coates, owner and chef at the late-lamented Bebe’s Barbecue announced last night via his Twitter feed that he is he new chef at Fergie’s Pub and he’s bringing his barbecue with him. Coates lookes to bring a new barbecue-centric menu online within 3 weeks. Expect brisket and ribs on the menu.
Coates says we can consider Fergie’s the new Bebe’s location and the truck will still happen but Fergie’s is the priority at the moment and we’re cool with that. We look forward to our next bite of Coates’ barbecue.
