Checking In On The Prep For Bubby’s Cook Off

Posted by Jason Sheehan on January 22nd, 2013

BubbysPrep3

Hey, remember a few days ago when we told you about Bubby’s Cook Off--the cooking contest meant to showcase modern Jewish cuisine in Philly? Yeah, well that’s coming right up (like, tomorrow), and yesterday, semi-professional picture-taker and friend of Foobooz Yoni Nimrod, just happened to be out at Citron & Rose where he was able to catch chef Yehuda Sichel and his crew in the throes of their Bubby’s prep work.

Check out a couple of the snaps after the jump. And if you’re into it, maybe stop by Bubby’s tomorrow to watch Sichel, Jean-Marie Lacroix, Guillermo Pernot, Mike Deganis  and Shane Cash go mano a mano in a cooking competition that will decide who does the best (modern) Jewish food in town.

More Food Events For January: Bubby’s Cook Off

Posted by Jason Sheehan on January 11th, 2013

bubbyscookoff

Okay, so we already told you about the Sabatino/Puchowitz/Moore wine dinner happening on the 17th. Then there was the “La Cottora” dinner happening at Le Virtu which brings together George Sabatino (again), Joe Cicala and Scott Schroeder for one big outdoor Abruzze-style winter festival on the 20th. And if that wasn’t enough, there’s also the first of the four-chef, four-meal collaboration dinners from Jon Cichon, Lee Styer, Nick Elmi and Chris Kearse happening at Will on the 13th.

But for those of you who are still looking for something more, how about this? On January 23, 5 more of the city’s big names will be coming together for a cooking competition called “Bubby’s Cook Off” which (perhaps unsurprisingly) is set to be a showcase of modern kosher Jewish cuisine in Philly.

The chefs on board for this event are Jean-Marie Lacroix (Brûlée Catering), Guillermo Pernot, (Cuba Libre Restaurant & Rum Bar), Mike Deganis (Alla Spina), Yehuda Sichel (Citron & Rose) and Shane Cash (Rat’s Restaurant). And they’re all going to be gathering to show off their kosher chops by offering small plates for all assembled–plus a distinguished panel of judges.

Tickets for Bubby’s Cook Off are available now at $175 a head with proceeds benefiting Lubavitch of Bucks County and Friendship Circle. For more information (and tickets) check out the event website below.

Free Tickets To ThinkFest: Round Two

Posted by Jason Sheehan on November 27th, 2012

Philadelphia magazine’s ThinkFest is coming up this weekend, and in order to get you all in an innovative frame of mind, we’ve decided to give away another pair of tickets for Saturday’s big-brain hootenanny at the Rittenhouse Hotel.

Because we’ve got a large and distinguished group of food people taking part in this year’s discussion (Stephen Starr is the Friday night keynote speaker, after all), for round one of the contest, I asked for your best food and/or restaurant brainstorms–the Big Ideas that would re-shape Philly and move it boldly into the future at the forefront of the food world.

This time, though–in honor of the Foobooz Top 50 Bars list released yesterday and the various beer and liquor smarties taking part in ThinkFest–we’re going in the other direction. This time, I want your Big Booze Ideas…

Seats Available For COOK September Classes

Posted by Jason Sheehan on August 28th, 2012

One of the big complaints about COOK is how fast everything seems to sell out. Folks try to get their seats on the first day registration opens and then, when they can’t, they just give up until next month.

Well that’s just nonsense because there are always a few seats that don’t get filled in that first mad rush for tickets. Thus, as a service to you, we’re tracking some of the early September events that aren’t yet sold out. You interested? Read on…

Foobooz Open Stove Night IV: A European Affair

Posted by Jason Sheehan on June 27th, 2012

We have made them cook with Doritos and beer. We have taken away their sous chefs. We have fed them shots and given them ramen, made them use radishes as a main course and forced them to make sauces out of cheez (as pictured above). And why have we done this?

All in the name of entertainment, of course. Bread and circuses for the food-obsessed hordes. The Foobooz Open Stove nights have become Philly’s gladiatorial arena–the place where young cooks come to prove themselves against their knife-wielding comrades–and we have just confirmed who our two new contestants will be.

On Thursday, July 5, Kenny “Admiral Snackbar” Bush of Bistrot La Minette will stand against Henrik “The Swedish Hammer” Ringbom of Brauhaus Schmitz in another raucous, whiskey-laced Open Stove showdown at COOK, a European Battle Royale pitting France against Germany in a contest for culinary domination. And the best part? Right this minute, there are still tickets available.

So get over to COOK right now and get your seats. I promise you won’t be disappointed.

Food and Sex: Fifty Shades of Grey Dinner at Supper

Posted by Foobooz on June 18th, 2012

Like so many other women across the world, Mitch Prensky’s wife Jennifer has apparently fallen under the spell of the girly-porn 50 Shades of Grey series. In particular, she was moved (if that’s the word) by the masked ball sequence in Fifty Shades Darker and has insisted that Mitch recreate that meal for a one-night-only pop-up at their restaurant, Supper.

Thus, on Wednesday June 27th, at 7:30 pm, Supper will be doing a four-course dinner based on the scene from the book. And in keeping with the spirit of the thing, there will also be a pop-up store from high-end lingerie and toy store Coeur in Rittenhouse Square. I’m betting you can guess what they’ll be bringing to the party.

4th Annual Wing King Competition Next Weekend

Posted by Aubrey Nagle on May 16th, 2012

Wing King, a chicken wing competition hosted by BigBite, is next weekend on Saturday May 26th at the Ellen Powell Tiberino Memorial Museum in West Philly. The competition, in its fourth year, brings together 25 local cooks to create the best wings in Philly. For a $10 donation you can gain access to the event, eat, drink, and judge the People’s Choice round.

Which, considering there’ll be free beer, is one helluva deal.

You said something about free beer?

Lemon Society Speakeasy: Drinking For A Good Cause

Posted by Tara Nurin on April 18th, 2012

Forgive us for stating the outrageously obvious, but once in a while some news comes across our desk to remind us of the head-shaking magnitude of the Alex’s Lemonade Stand organization, and we’re left in awe that one young child could spawn such an operation.

This week, the Lemon Society Speakeasy is just that news. The “speakeasy,” being held Friday night, is the inaugural event for the Lemon Society of Philadelphia, the new young professionals arm of the charity. The impressive part isn’t that some of the city’s best-known bartenders are participating (Phoebe Esmon, Colin Shearn, Christian Gaal, and Mike Goodrell from SRO). No, the part that gives us pause is that Alex’s now boasts a young professionals group, just like a major cultural institution or an industry association.
