Hey, Speaking Of Food Trucks… “How To Start A Food Truck” Clinic For Prospective Owners

Posted by Jason Sheehan on February 6th, 2013

MobileFoodClinic

Here’s something for those of you who read that last story about the crew from FLK starting up their own food truck and said, “Hey, that sounds like a GREAT idea! I need to go out and do that right now!”

Penn Law and the Philadelphia Mobile Food Association are holding an all-day seminar on Saturday, February 16 which will cover the basics of food truck start-up, including financing, intellectual property, regulations and licensing (which, it seems, is where most people get tripped up in this town) and risk management. There will also be breakfast, lunch and a general membership meeting from the PMFA which is open to both members and non-members.

The clinic will be held at the UPenn Law School. For more information, check out the PMFA’s facebook page.

Local 215 Food Truck Debuts This Thursday at Night Market

Posted by Aubrey Nagle on August 14th, 2012

As we mentioned in our food truck schedule round up, a new food truck is coming to town. Local 215 will be a “food truck for foodies,” serving a variety of dishes with ingredients sourced from the city and the surrounding area. Local 215 will be making its debut at the Night Market in Mount Airy this Thursday, August 16th from 6-10:30pm.

Highlights from Local 215’s menu include a roasted pork shoulder sandwich with apple and cabbage slaw, crispy polenta triangles topped with pork belly, cheese, or veggies, and an apple cider sugar rolled pretzel. If their menu tastes as good as it sounds, Local 215 may work its way to the top of Philly’s already thriving truck scene.

Posted by Aubrey Nagle on July 30th, 2012

Seinfeld‘s famous Soup Nazi not only has a food truck but it is going on tour. Better still, the Soup Nazi himself Larry Thomas is touring along with it and they are stopping in Philly.

Today the Soup Nazi truck will be stopping at 1555 Hamilton Street (at Hamilton and 16th) in front of the CBS3 and The CW studios from noon to  1 p.m. The menu includes mulligatawny soup, Junior Mints, muffin tops, black and white cookies, Snapple, and Twix – all inspired by the TV series and all for free.

For Larry Thomas’s sake let’s hope he gets paid every time he has to say “No soup for you!”

Vendy Awards 2012

Posted by Aubrey Nagle on June 28th, 2012

The Second Annual Vendy Awards have been scheduled for Saturday, July 28th. At The Lot at 39th and Market, food writer Joy Manning and chef Marcie Turney will be judging 8-10 street food vendors nominated by the great people of Philadelphia in a sidewalk cook off. The general public can buy tickets to the event to enjoy food and beer all while supporting The Food Trust through fundraising.

The Vendy Awards started out in NYC in 2005 and they were so successful that cities like Philadelphia and Los Angeles have picked up their own. Last year the winner of the Philly Vendy Cup was Gigi and Big R and the People’s Choice went to Cucinca Zapata while SweetBox took home the Dessert prize. Nominate your favorite food truck or sidewalk cart today to show your appreciation for your daily lunch spot. And buy your tickets at the Vendy website fast, the event is sure to sell out — and even if there were any left at the door, they cost more.

How The Night Market Got So Cool

Posted by Tara Nurin on May 24th, 2012

The scene at the Chinatown Night Market

Have you ever wondered how the Night Market immediately became the coolest thing since trucker hats when The Food Trust announced its first one (on East Passyunk) way back in 2010–long before your mom and your gerbil started retweeting the movements of every food truck in Philly?

Well, we have. So in light of tonight’s 1st market of the year (on 2nd Street, north of Fairmount), we called up The Food Trust people to ask them. They credit an accidental “brilliant stroke of marketing genius” they call their “whisper campaign.”

I’ll Have An Egg and Cheese and Mouse Turd Sandwich, Please

Posted by Victor Fiorillo on April 4th, 2012

Well, I was planning to scarf down a $2.50 egg-and-cheese sandwich (ketchup and pepper) from a street vendor near Foobooz World Headquarters. But once I spied these clear-as-day rodent droppings sitting atop a long roll on the counter inside the cart, I decided to skip breakfast altogether. (See, I knew I should have gone with the English muffin.) Read the rest of this entry »
