Turkey Fry at Varga Bar

Posted by Foobooz on November 30th, 2012

Usually a Sunday with an Eagles versus Cowboys game is a big deal. But  not this Sunday, this Sunday it’s a dud. And Chef Evan Turney is marking the turkey of a game at Varga Bar by frying turkeys outside of Varga Bar.

The turkeys will be served with a choice of two sides: roasted garlic mashed potatoes, sweet yams, pecan leek and sausage stuffing with sage, sauteed kale, and orange cranberry chutney. Each plate comes with mushroom gravy, and costs $30 per person. The turkeys will be run from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. and there will also be whiskey and beer specials throughout the day.

Good Beer and the NFL

Posted by Foobooz on September 5th, 2012

We’re always looking for ways to watch the NFL while drinking better beer than comes in aluminum bottles. City Tap House seems to be speaking directly to us with today’s Belgian Beer Blitz celebrating the kickoff of the NFL season tonight.

The University City mega-beer bar will be serving up St. Bernardus Wit, St. Bernardus Tripel, Abbe de Rocs Tripel, Duchese de Bourgogne and Nostradamus Belgian Brown this evening.

City Tap House won’t be the only bar serving good beer with football today and this weekend. Keep checking back to this post for the latest good beer deals we find.

Football Specials

Posted by Foobooz on September 10th, 2010

We put out the call for football specials earlier this week. We combed Twitter feeds, surfed Facebook pages and alas we have come up practically empty.

So we turn to you dear readers, who is offering football specials this weekend that are better than aluminum bottles of swill?

Here is an unusual trio of spots to get you started:

Pizzeria Stella – Stephen Starr’s only restaurant with a TV is offering $3 beer specials and small bites not regularly on the menu during Monday Night Football.

Percy Street Barbecue – We really like the beer selection at Percy Street and we really like the sound of this; $2 pints of Victory beers during all Eagles games.

Distrito –  Come with an empty stomach on Monday as it is all you can eat tacos and enchiladas for $25 during Monday Night Football.

Not an Eagles fan? Thrillist has the places to watch the Browns, Jets, Steelers, Bills and Patriots.

Are You Ready For Some Football?

Posted by Foobooz on September 10th, 2009

The kickoff of the NFL season is upon us as the Steelers and Titans face off this evening. Oddly there isn’t a football special to be seen in Philadelphia Weekly or City Paper this week. But hey, that’s why there’s the Internet!

Here’s what we know that’s going on:

Tonight, Jose Pistola’s is kicking off the NFL season with Troegs Brewing Co. There will be a firkin of Nugget Nectar, Dead Reckoning Porter and even a keg of Mad Elf for the night.

Also on each Sunday during the NFL season Jose’s will be offering, $3 Sly Fox Pils and Pale Ale cans plus $3 Ithaca Apricot Wheat. They’re also introducing the “Surf & Turf Bloody Mary.” A be a gourmet hot dog, wing and breakfast taco menu will round out the offerings.

Misconduct Tavern is doing an NFL Club this season. Join the club for $30 and you are entitled to a special menu of apps, sandwiches and beer packages at a special price of $25. For instance you could get balsamic glazed ribs, Misconduct Chicken Cheesesteak and 4 pints of Kenzinger. You do more that two weeks and you’ll be ahead. Not a terrible way to build up some loyalty. And of course the menu will change so you won’t get bored.

Bridgid’s has a Longtrail Brewmaster Promo tonight. They’ve got Imperial Porter, Belgian White, Coffee Stout and Double IPAs for just $4.

Update: The Piazza at Schmidt’s is throwing a big party for the Eagles/Carolina game. It starts at 11am when Vino kicks off its $15 sandwich and drink deal. The game will be televised on the big screen in the Piazza and you can even rent a cabana for you and up to 10 friends. After the game ends, ?uestlove will be DJ-ing the last of the season’s Sundae parties.

Blame the Chicken Cheesesteak?

Posted by Kirsten Henri on January 19th, 2009

images

Personally, I like to blame the cheesesteak for most of Philadelphia’s image problems (long live the roast pork!), but could a chicken cheesesteak be responsible for the Eagles’ crushing loss on Sunday? On Friday, Dan Gross reported that Donovan McNabb ate his ‘lucky sandwich’ before heading west:

Donovan McNabb showed up at Talk of the Town (3020 S. Broad) to pick up his lucky chicken cheesesteak hoagie with American cheese, mayo, ketchup, lettuce and tomato. While D-Mac insists on picking up his own sandwich, the shop delivered a few more steaks to the Nova Care Complex for kicker David Akers and a few other Iggles, who have since departed for Arizona.

I don’t know much about football, but perhaps a new sandwich is in order? Anyone have any recommendations for what might be a luckier lucky meal for the Eagles quarterback?
