Burgers. Lots of burgers!
That’s what’s in store Sunday, May 5th at the Third Annual Philadelphia Burger Brawl being held at the Fleisher Art Memorial, located on 719 Catherine Street in South Philadelphia. The event will feature twenty of the city’s top burger chefs duking it out to see who will come out with the top burger.
The invitation-only event sells out annually and more than 700 attendees are expected. Marc Summers will emcee the event.
The Philadelphia Burger Brawl was founded in 2011 by Rob Wasserman, owner of Rouge, 500 Degrees and The Saint James, as a private fundraiser to benefit the construction of computer labs in public elementary schools in the City of Philadelphia.

Food & Wine makes a list of the best bacon burgers in the country and curiously choose Shake Shack’s SmokeShack burger as Philadelphia’s best. True, the 20th Street location was the first Shake Shack to feature the SmokeShack as a regular menu option and we are fans of the New York based chain. But look around, like really, look out the window from Shake Shack and at Village Whiskey. In a list of bacon on burgers, it is difficult to imagine ignoring Village Whiskey’s Whiskey King. The $26, half-pound of beef burger, topped with maple bourbon glazed cipollini onions, Rogue blue cheese, applewood bacon and for good measure, foie gras has to be in the conversation.

Los Angeles based Umami Burgers just received $20 million from Fortress Investment Group in order to fund expansion. Umami has built quite the buzz for their modern burgers in California and now are looking outward. Umami is looking to open 13 locations in 2013, including Philadelphia, Chicago, Washington D.C., Miami and New York.
Maybe as they expand outside of California, they’ll bring back their foie gras and jelly doughnuts.
