Hanukkah

Latkepalooza and More Spots for Latke Goodness

Posted by Amanda Shulman on December 7th, 2012

When Hanukkah time rolls around, we all get excited about different things. For some its the presents, for others the holiday spirit, for many the coming together of the family, but for me, its all about the food. Fried food, to be exact. Hanukkah is an eight night excuse to indulge in fried anything and everything, most traditionally the latke. Whether its made with potatoes, zucchini, or sweet potato, and topped with apple sauce, sour cream or a fruity chutney, the possibilities are endless.

For a full guide of where to eat Latkes in Philly, check out the Jewish Exponent’s comprehensive list. And if your like us and just can’t get enough of the fritters, don’t miss the 8th Annual Latkepalooza, this Sunday, December 9th. Some of your favorite Philly hot spots will be doling out their own creative versions of latkes. The line up includes Citron and Rose, Bar Ferdinand, Federal Donuts, Sabrina’s Café, Delicatessen, Estia, Singapore Chinese Kitchen, Talula’s Garden and Tashan. The event will take place at the Gershman Y from 2-4 p.m., and tickets are $15 for adults and $5 for kids. Remember, the holiday is encouraging your fried indulgence, so no need to restrain yourself.

Kevin Sbraga has planned some creative and festive tasting menus for his Chef’s Counter. Monday through Thursday the counter holds one seating a night for up to six people. The six courses are $75 with a $50 beverage pairing. From now until mid January Sbraga’s counter will be full of holiday themed dishes, including a Halloween Harvest, a Sbraga Thanksgiving with a take on Turduken and “leftovers,” and special dinners for Hanukkah, Christmas, and Three Kings Day.

Next on the menu after the current Back to School lineup is a healthy all-vegetarian menu including “Faux Carrot Pho” and cauliflower “steak.” The Veggies Only menu runs from October 1 to the 11. Check out the full menu along with the full Chef’s Counter schedule after the jump. Read the rest of this entry »
