Brian Freedman really enjoys his brunch at Hawthornes. He even enjoys the 90-minute wait to be seated.
French toast—really more of a thrice-cooked bread pudding—is a standout. Tucked inside the crisp edges is a dense-yet-light center that’s silky with a bit of every sort of bread the kitchen uses here: brioche, challah, multigrain and more. It’s hearty and elegant all at once, and calls out for a side of some sort of meat. (I’d go with the sausage, all snappy-cased and tender, over the thick-cut bacon, which could have been crispier.)
Other standards are just as carefully crafted, the waffles light and nutty, the omelets delicate, moist, and flavorful with ingredients that have actually been treated as integral parts of the whole as opposed to merely stuffing: Mushrooms and peppers had been sauteed, for example, as opposed to having been dumped in there raw.

Hawthornes Beer Cafe is expanding physically and conceptually, and we’re very excited to reap the rewards.
The tap system has grown from nine taps to eleven, and right now include Duvel Single, Elysian Night Owl, Stillwater Autumnal, Dock Street Prisoner of Hell, Hawthorne’s house shandy and more. All of the beers can be enjoyed for half-off during happy hour between 4 and 6 p.m. each weeknight.
Hawthornes is also in the midst of renovating their fireplace, which promises to be bigger and better.
And through the end of October, get 15% off any Oktoberfest six-pack. Stock up now before this stupid storm hits.

For most of you reading this, the only real question this weekend is which of the several new restaurants scheduled to open over the next couple days you’re actually going to be able to get into. Though you’ll have to wait a few more days for the debut of Starr’s Route 6 (scheduled for Thursday the 17th), and things still appear to be up in the air at Ulivo (which Grub Street reported did not make its scheduled opening yesterday due to “situations beyond their control”), there’s still Birra (which opened last week), the new Percy Street BBQ (running smoothly since Monday in the Comcast Center) and Ela, which is scheduled to throw wide the doors in about an hour.
Looking for something different? Read on…

The local music scene got a bit of bad news over the weekend when word began trickling out that Tritone, the small music venue/neighborhood bar at 1508 South Street, was set to close. The club debuted in 2001, when current owner Dave Rogers (a veteran of Fergie’s), and his late partner, music promoter and bartender Rick Dombrowolski (who understandably went by “Rick D.”), joined forces. While a bartender at neighboring Bob & Barbara’s, Dombrowolski, who died of a heart attack in 2007, invented what has become known throughout the city as the “Citywide Special,” a can of Pabst and a shot of Jim Beam for $3.
