Hurricane Sandy

This Weekend: It’s “A Shore Thing”

Posted by Tara Nurin on March 8th, 2013

With snowstorms blowing up half the country and cold rain drizzling on what should have been a week of balmy, sunny days, it’s hard not to miss the summer and the shore. And after Hurricane Sandy, it’s hard not to miss it even more, considering the storm made it so we can’t quite go home to many of our beachhouses ever again.

Sensing our gloominess, Cherry Hill plastic surgeon Dr. Susan Hughes is throwing “A Shore Thing” from 10 AM to 2 PM this Saturday to raise money for Governor and First Lady Christie’s hurricane relief fund while recreating the feel of summer and the tastes of the boardwalk. Playing off the fact that Hughes’ practice specializes in getting beach-shy bodies ready for summer, her staff is transforming a Cherry Hill warehouse into a summer day, where you can first get fatter by stuffing yourself with cotton candy, make-your-own funnel cake, hot dogs and boardwalk fries. Beach arcade games enhance the mood and raise additional money for storm victims, as do raffle tickets good for Tory Burch goodies and cosmetic procedure discounts.

RSVP’ing in advance earns you $50 off your next treatment of $250 or more.

Flying Fish to Debut F.U. Sandy

Posted by Foobooz on January 18th, 2013

In early February, Flying Fish Brewing is debuting Forever Unloved (F.U.) Sandy, a hybrid wheat-pale ale with 100% of the proceeds going to New Jersey victims of hurricane Sandy.

Flying Fish founder Gene Muller says that “at Flying Fish, we proudly hail from the great state of New Jersey, so when tragedy struck, we knew immediately that we wanted to do something to help. Every single aspect of this beer, from the man-hours spent brewing it to the hops used to season it to the kegs that will contain it, has been donated so every cent brought in goes to Superstorm Sandy victims.”

Approximately 100 kegs of F.U. Sandy have been brewed, the sales of which will generate $50,000 towards Sandy relief efforts. Those charities will be nominated via Twitter and Facebook.

Look for the draft only beer throughout New Jersey and Philadelphia in early February.

Side Project Jerky Does Pho

Posted by Alex Tewfik on November 28th, 2012

The broth’s flavor intensity is what does it for me, but to others, it could be another component. Maybe it’s the crunch from the Moyashi that contrasts so soundly with the delicate beef and supple noodles. Maybe it’s the thai chili’s heat cut by its tart lime counterpart. But most likely, it’s all of it. There’s a reason pho has the following it does — it’s a perfect mixture of ingredients, and its balance is unparalleled.

So when Marcos Espinoza (Side Project Jerky) and Chef Sean Magee (Executive chef at Time) ran into each other at a thrash metal concert, they threw a few back between sets, and parted ways when it was over. It wasn’t until Sean Magee saw that Espinoza had an interest in chef collaborations that he emailed Side Project with his idea. As a self-styled pho addict, he decided to create pho flavored jerky.

UPDATED: Phoebe Esmon and Christian Gaal Organizing Drinkers (And Bartenders) For Sandy Relief

Posted by Tara Nurin on November 16th, 2012

Ever since they left The Farmer’s Cabinet, things have been relatively quiet on the Phistian (that’s Phoebe Esmon and Christian Gaal to us non-celeb types) front, as they’ve flitted around the city and the country these past few months, gypsy bartending, writing cocktail menus and spending time with Esmon’s family in North Carolina. But now they’re back, at least for the moment, and they’ve arrived with a purpose: to harness their considerable bar cred to support Hurricane Sandy relief efforts.

Posted by Maegan Cadet on November 12th, 2012

The one year anniversary of Italian restaurant Ulivo was yesterday, November 11, but just because you missed the actual anniversary doesn’t mean you can’t still celebrate the restaurant and help a good cause too.

Through November 15th, Ulivo is offering a three-course, prix fixe menu to its regular dinner menu. Proceeds from the prix fixe menu are being donated to the Feed the Children charity, helping those affected by Hurricane Sandy.

Chef Vola’s Stands Strong Through Sandy

Posted by Amanda Shulman on November 2nd, 2012

While Sandy only nicked Philadelphia, the storm did some serious damage in Atlantic City and across the Jersey coastline. And while you may be concerned about whether some of your favorite spots are still standing, we’ve got some news on one spot that would have been severely missed. AC’s beloved Chef Vola’s, which was awarded a James Beard Award as an American Classic, is alive and raring to go. Their answering machine message claims that they will be attempting to open tonight, an announcement that will be met with glee from the restaurant’s many regulars who make pilgrimages to the subterranean restaurant.

The family-run restaurant operates out of a basement of a house, just a half-block in from the Boardwalk. The hidden spot has been open since 1921, does not advertise and doesn’t even list its phone number (though Google reveals all). Reservations are required for this Italian BYOB and regulars are are treated like family.

The Press of Atlantic City has more information on the recovery of Jersey Shore restaurants after Hurricane Sandy.

Who Is Still #OpenInPHL AND Who Is Now #ClosedInPHL

Posted by Foobooz on October 29th, 2012

We’re still tracking tweets of bars and restaurants that are indeed #OpeninPHL but as conditions deteriorate this evening and discretion becomes the better part of valor, we encourage restaurants and bars to use the #ClosedInPHL hashtag when they are shutting it down for the night.
