Valentine Date Idea: Love Stories and Pizza

This Saturday, February 9th at 1 p.m. Laurel Hill Cemetary is hosting Til Death Do Us Part: The Love Stories of Laurel Hill, a walking tour inspired by a tory of a woman whose heart, and only her heart is buried in the cemetery. After hearing her and other love stories of the cemetery, head inside for a toasty fireside reception with wine, hot chocolate and hors d’oeuvres. The tour is a very reasonable $20, $18 for students and seniors.

Don’t fill up too completely, because next up is dinner at nearby In Riva. Cozy up and share some of the best pizza around and if there’s anything featuring buratta, order it. Chef Arthur Cavaliere offers our favorite version of that cheesy goodness around.

Craig LaBan Praises In Riva

We’ve had several enjoyable meals at In Riva over the past few months and in Craig LaBan’s online chat this week, the Inquirer restaurant critic sings the praises of the East Falls spot as well.

What have been your highlight flavors from the past week? I’ve had many, including this wood-fired pizza with brussels sprouts, rosemary ham, and balsamic from In Riva in East Falls – very Stella-like in setup. Some really nice wood-fired pies (even if those heat blisters can flake a bit too much char for my tastes. …) But the flavors are great, thoughtful, and well-prepared. It’s really settled into becoming the neighborhood anchor – casual, affordable, tasty – that I think East Falls really needs. Nice view of the river (great for cyclist breaks). Excellent little selection of Italian craft beers. And the crispy artichoke appetizer is not to be missed.

In Riva Adds Housemade Pasta to Menu

In Riva is introducing four tasting-size pasta dishes which will be adapted on a monthly basis to pay tribute to the season’s peak ingredients, opening the door to an incredible amount of pastabillities. For the East Falls’ restaurant’s fall pasta debut, Chef/Owner Arthur Cavaliere has a Garganelli with lamb ragu, black olives, and pine nuts; a Corone with peas, shallots and truffles; a Nastrini with lobster, chanterelle and basil, and a Fiondette with pork sugo, asparagus and oregano. The pastas range from $11 to $16 or you can share them all for $45.

Beyond this pasta party, the menu is full of fall additions like Glazed Short Ribs with golden raisins, capers, and pine nuts, Roasted Scallops with apple, smoked bacon, and almond, and a Potato and Gorgonzola pizza with leek, smoked bacon, and thyme.

In Riva also offers a Chef’s Tasting Menu every night for $35 a person, for $15 you can add a wine pairing to accompany each course. With these new pastas, we’re feeling the fancy route, and have a feeling you will be too.

Pizza Cooking Classes at In Riva

In Riva’s chef Arthur Cavaliere will soon become a teacher. Well, sort of. Cavaliere will be teaching monthly hands-on pizza cooking classes at In Riva starting Monday September 10th. Each class will teach 20 students how to make In Riva’s Napoletana style pizzas and will be followed by a four course dinner with wine pairings, all (with tax and gratuity included) for $85.

Each class beings on Mondays at 7 p.m. and will be held September 10th, October 1st, November 12th, and December 3rd. Reservations can be made for these public classes, as well as for private pizza cooking classes, by calling In Riva at 215-438-4848.

Summer Menu at In Riva

In Riva has updated their menu for summer. In addition to switching up some of their wine and beer list, they have added a few dishes like beet panzanella, yellow tomato gazpacho. Crispy pork belly is making an appearance (go ahead, do your happy dance) along with a speck and pineapple pizza, and a mushroom and zucchini pizza with corn and truffle. The best addition might just be the polpette pizza with feta and meatballs, or the new pizza “add-ons” like prosciutto, baby arugula, egg, and white anchovy. Okay, maybe not the anchovy part, but you get the picture.

Pizzas Star at In Riva in East Falls

Adam Erace visits the banks of the Schuylkill River to try out In Riva, the new restaurant from chef Arthur Cavaliere.

The meatballs, though praiseworthy, aren’t the main attraction at this riverside rendezvous: That honor belongs to In Riva’s pizzas. Stretched 12 inches, they puff, crisp and blister in two minutes in the oak-burning oven, the centerpiece of the snug open kitchen. Up in the dome, 1100 degrees of heat seethe and hover like captive harpies, radiating the brash angles of the superior margherita’s raw San Marzano tomato sauce, sweetening the cippolini onions on a pie of the same name. The former is classic and the latter is new-school (with Brussels sprouts, sharp provolone, pancetta and chèvre), and I still couldn’t decide which I liked better after devouring three slices of each — though I can still remember the cippolini pie’s spatter of aged balsamic, and how the vinegar’s time-won sweetness and acidity cut bloodlessly through the pie’s considerable fattiness.

In Riva Opens Today

Philadelphia chef  Arthur Cavaliere opens his first restaurant today in East Falls. In Riva will specialize in Napoletana style pizza and antipasti. To drink there will be ample selections of new and old world wines, Italian craft beers and specialty cocktails.

In Riva overlooks Kelly Drive and the Schuylkill River and in warmer months will offer outdoor seating. Menu prices will range from $9-19.

In Riva Bringing Italian to Kelly Drive in East Falls

In Riva will replace the former Franco’s on Kelly Drive

This December chef Arthur Cavaliere plans to open In Riva in East Falls. The restaurant will take over the former Franco’s Trattoria overlooking Kelly Drive and the Schuylkill River. Cavaliere, a Philadelphia native has a rich history in Philadelphia restaurants since starting as a line cook for chef Derek Davis in 1996. Since then he joined the Starr empire and worked with Jose Garces at El Vez. He followed Garces to Amada before returning as executive chef at El Vez. Then after a stint at Parc, Cavaliere left Philadelphia for work in Washington DC and in Michigan.

In Riva will be his first restaurant and will specialize in Napoletana style pizza, contemporary antipasti and Southern Italian inspired dishes. Menu prices will range from $8-19.

The restaurant will have a liquor license and will feature Italian and New World wines, Italian craft beers and specialty cocktails.
