Philadelphia Named Number One Bacon City in USA

Posted by Foobooz on June 11th, 2013

We don’t often give a damn about arbitrary lists from national web sites ranking Philadelphia near the top or bottom of some category. But when national real estate site, Estately ranked Philadelphia number one for bacon lovers. Well we admit, they had us.

Among the reasons given for ranking Philadelphia number one:

  • PYT’s bacon taco.
  • Cochon’s deep fried oysters with bacon aioli.
  • Jake’s Sandwich Board’s Turbacon sandwich.
  • And of course, actor Kevin Bacon and his father, city planner Edmund Bacon.

Sounds like solid math to us.

Four Local Restaurants on United States of Bacon Tonight

Posted by Foobooz on February 25th, 2013

schmitter-diagram

Tonight at 7 p.m. on Destination America, formerly Discovery Home & Leisure, is featuring four local restaurants on United States of Bacon. As you might expect there’s a ton of bacon on the show but we have to raise an eyebrow over the inclusion of McNally’s Tavern’s Schmitter. Surely a great gluttonous sandwich, but as the diagram above shows, bacon is not a normal part of the Schmitter. Now bacon is available for a dollar add-on, but who needs bacon when you already have steak, grilled salami, cheese, fried onions, tomatos, special sauce and even more cheese?

Turducken Sandwiches and Pumpkin Pie Shakes

Posted by Foobooz on November 12th, 2012

Jake’s Sandwich Board has brought back its most popular sandwich and shake now through Thanksgiving. The sandwich is a turducken sandwich is first smothered in cranberry spread, then layered with apple-sausage stuffing and stuffed with creole seasoned slices of turkey, duck and chicken and topped off with brown gravy and hashbrowns. The pumpkin pie shake (which we don’t recommend consuming at the same time you tackle the Turducken sandwich) is vanilla ice cream blended with fresh pumpkin pie and topped with ginger bread cookies. The sandwich is $10 and the shake is $5.

Six Pack: Bacon Bacon Bacon

Posted by Maegan Cadet on October 12th, 2012

Editor’s Note: This week, we’re going to be introducing our new army of interns to you, the Foobooz readership. And it occurred to us that what better way for you to get to know them a little then for them to tell you all about something they loved to eat? Thus, we set them each to assembling their own Foobooz Six Pack, focusing on something they craved.

For our final Six Pack this week, we’d like to introduce Maegan Cadet–a sophomore at the University of Pennsylvania pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in English and Fine Arts. She’ll eat anything saturated with carbs and will drink anything with caffeine. While she is a self-professed “pretend foodie,” she prides herself in knowing a good croissant when she tastes one.

Here’s her introductory Six Pack: Three courses of bacon-wrapped, bacon-spiked and bacon-infused goodness, proving that one can never have enough bacon (that is, until it runs out).

Posted by Jason Sheehan on May 23rd, 2012

Want to see Peter McAndrews (of Paesano’s, Modo Mio, Popolino and Monsu) talk dirty to a big chunk of pork? Then watch the video above.

Want to see him (or some of his minions) do it live? Then come out today at noon to the Shops At Liberty Place where we’ll be holding another Best Of Philly public tasting–this time of roast pork sandwiches. We’ll have crews coming in from the aforementioned Paesano’s, from DiBruno Bros., from McCrossen’s Tavern and Jake’s Sandwich Board. You’ll get to eat some sandwiches then vote for which one gets crowned as the Best Roast Pork Sandwich in this year’s Best Of Philly issue (coming in August).

So the details again: Free sandwiches, noon, today, Shops at Liberty Place. Got it? And don’t be late because something tells me that these suckers are going to go fast

Travel Channel’s Food Paradise to Feature Jake’s and Hot Diggity!

Posted by Foobooz on May 18th, 2012

The Travel Channel’s Food Paradise is filming at two Philly locations this weekend. On Friday from 12 to 2 p.m. Food Paradise will be heading to Jake’s Sandwich Board to film the shop’s Garlic Bomb, a cheeseteak with roasted garlic, sautéed garlic, and deep fried garlic cloves. Jake’s is looking for a few adventurous eaters to be filmed doing the 5-Pound Philly Challenge with the Garlic Bomb as a two-footer, accompanying the challenge’s four soft pretzels, a whole box of TastyKakes, 24 Peanut Chews, and a Champ Cherry soda – in 45 minutes or less. What this has to do with paradise, we’ll never know.

On Saturday the film crew moves to Hot Diggity! from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The hotdog shop’s owner Keith Garabedian would like the place to be packed for filming as the show plans on interviewing customers about their favorite dogs. Hot Diggity! will also be debuting their new homemade sodas on Saturday, including flavors like root beer and maple lemonade.

So if you would like to be on TV and/or love insanely garlic-filled food challenges, head to Jake’s and Hot Diggity! and maybe you’ll be “discovered.”
