The power is out at Broad Street’s Symphony House, Inga Saffron’s favorite pink condo building. The building also holds Kevin Sbraga’s restaurant. So the Top Chef winner is showing the adaptability that helped him win the show and is breaking out his roasting box (doesn’t everyone have mobile roasting box?) and will be preparing an alfresco two-course dinner for $25.

Remember back a couple weeks ago when we wrote about Kevin Sbraga’s No Kid Hungry/Share Our Strength charity dinner? Of the five chefs that Sbraga was bringing on to cook with him (Walter Abrams, Shola Olunloyo, Jonathan Adams, David Katz and Nick Elmi), four of them were currently without kitchens, and the joke around Foobooz World HQ was, what does Kevin Sbraga know about Nick Elmi–the sole working chef on the list–that we don’t?
Well apparently he really did know something because word came down this weekend that Elmi was leaving his position as chef at Rittenhouse Tavern to open a restaurant of his own. Which means that Sbraga’s dinner can now function as a kind of support group for Philadelphia chefs without kitchens (including three former Perrier vets: Adams, Elmi and Abrams) as well as raising money for a good cause.

Breakfast For Dinner, Philly Tailgate, Veggies Only, Feast of the Seven Fishes–those were a few of the inspirations that shaped Kevin Sbraga’s last round of tasting menus at his eponymous (and award-winning) restaurant. But now Mr. Top Chef has come out with a whole new spread which will take us from April (where he’ll kick off with a Spring Menu Preview) all the way through ’til December.
The way the monthly chef-counter tastings work is this: They’re six courses, prix fixe, priced at $75 (with an optional $50 beverage pairing), and served at the short counter in front of the open kitchen–often by chef Kevin Sbraga himself. They’re frequently weird, sometimes challenging, almost always awesome, and if you have the means you should totally check one out.

April White, former Philadelphia magazine food editor, has authored a new cookbook and is celebrating her release in style. The cookbook, The Philadelphia Chef’s Table, features recipes from 70 of Philly’s top restaurants. Now you can whip up your restaurant favorites at home, whether that means making Percy Street Barbecue’s Cheddar-Jalapeño Corn Bread or Han Dynasty’s dan dan noodles. The book also acts as a guide to eating in Philly through narratives and descriptions of every restaurant mentioned. Kevin Sbraga of Sbraga, named as one of Esquire’s best new restaurants of 2012, joins White in holding a free cooking demonstration at the book signing event on Monday, October 8, from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at La Cucina in the Reading Terminal Market.
