Kitchen Nightmares

Who Are The Amy’s Baking Company Kitchen Nightmares of Philadelphia?

Posted by Victor Fiorillo on May 14th, 2013

amysbaking

In case you didn’t watch the latest episode of Kitchen Nightmares, the show depicted perhaps its most dysfunctional restaurant yet: Amy’s Baking Company of Scottsdale, Arizona. (You can watch the full episode of Kitchen Nightmares: Amy’s Baking Company below.) The couple behind the restaurant were too much for even Gordon Ramsay to take, and now they’ve taken to Facebook to go completely off the deep end. Read the rest of this entry »

Gordon Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares Couldn’t Save Zocalo

Posted by Victor Fiorillo on February 13th, 2013

GORDON

On March 23, 2012, longtime University City Mexican spot Zocalo was the subject of Gordon Ramsay’s profane intervention on Kitchen Nightmares. “It’s necessary sometimes for someone to come and teach you how to run a business,” Zocalo co-owner Mary Russell told Philly.com a few days after the episode aired. Less than a year later, the restaurant has closed. Read the rest of this entry »

Zocalo, Honest Tom’s on Kitchen Nightmares for Different Reasons

Posted by Foobooz on March 30th, 2012

Tonight on the season finale of Gordon Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares, Gordo looks to turn around Zocalo in West Philadelphia.

To tell the truth, we’re as excited to see Honest Tom getting face time as we are to see what Ramsay can do to save a Mexican restaurant that is serving some seriously non-Mexican cheese.

Post Kitchen Nightmares Chiarella’s

Posted by Foobooz on January 31st, 2012

The decidedly old-school Chiarella’s on East Passyunk recently survived a visit from Gordon Ramsay and his Kitchen Nightmares crew. How does that sort of thing change a place? Trey Popp finds out in this month’s revisit.

The menu, to be sure, is better attuned to the times—at least in its length, which has been trimmed by a good three-quarters. The exhaustive listing of veal done a dozen ways, pork in a dozen similar ones, etc., has been replaced with a more streamlined range of offerings. There’s also at least one addition that qualifies as trendy: diminutive arancini that were flawlessly executed, even if the dots of smoked paprika aioli were too small to register.

Gordon Ramsay Coming to Town

Posted by Foobooz on November 3rd, 2011

Gordon Ramsay and his Kitchen Nightmares TV show is coming to town next week. He’ll be filming at East Passyunk’s Chiarella’s from November 8th to 11th and at West Philadelphia’s Zocalo from the 12th to the 15th.

What strikes us about these two choices are that they actually seem salvageable, unlike potato based restaurants by first-time restaurateurs. Chiarella’s has been on Passyunk since 1970. They have perseverance on their side and that block of Passyunk is as hot for restaurants as any in Philadelphia.

Zocalo has long frustrated us. It is an attractive corner spot on a clean block on Lancaster Avenue and there’s even a nice outdoor patio. If only someone could raise its food above mediocre. Maybe Gordon Ramsey and his spit and vinegar can have a lasting impact.

To see how nice looking Zocalo really is, check out Google’s Restaurant View. Google just rolled out this feature yesterday and Zocalo is the first local restaurant we’ve seen using it.

Hey Big Fella, Wanna Be On TV?

Posted by Jason Sheehan on July 6th, 2011

Are you a chef (or a cook, a baker, a bartender, farmer or guy who drives a delivery truck for Sysco)?

Have you been staying late after closing to drink the hollandaise sauce (or eat whole bags of flour, bar garnishes or frozen crab puffs)?

Well then man, have we got an opportunity for you.
