Le Viet Is Offering a $16.95 Alternative to Restaurant Week

Posted by Foobooz on January 18th, 2013

Le Viet, on 11th Street, just off of Washington Avenue isn’t eligible to participate in Center City’s Restaurant Week so they’re offering a better special of their own. During Restaurant Week (January 20th through February 1st) the Vietnamese restaurant will be offering a special three-course dinner for just $16.95 per person.

Choose from exciting appetizers like a watercress salad with carrots, onion, peanuts and beef or a grilled chicken slider (pictured) on a steamed bun with carrot, cucumber, and scallion. Entrées include caramelized pork slices served with steaming rice or tofu stuffed with shrimp and cilantro. Among the three dessert options is Le Viet’s Vanilla ice cream with fried banana, topped with coconut cream, toasted coconut, and peanuts.

Glitz Does Not Mean Fake at Le Viet

Posted by Foobooz on November 29th, 2010

Craig LaBan finds that Le Viet’s goodness isn’t only skin deep as the restaurant provides Authentic Vietnamese flavors.

When I think of the dishes that would draw me back to Le Viet, the most exceptional flavors reside in the “appetizer” section of the vast, 77-item dinner menu. [Chef] Sinh’s standard spring rolls (“cha gio”) are just so-so. But his clever variation called “cha gio re” is memorable, replacing the usual one-dimensional pastry wrapper with the shattering crunch of a tube made from spun threads of crispy crepe batter. The most unusual here is “hen xuc banh da,” a central Vietnamese mince of baby clams blended with onions and ground beef cradled in a speckled rice-cracker bowl that looks like modern art. It was topped with minty basil and crushed peanuts and tossed in a complex sweet and sour oyster sauce. I broke off cracker shards and devoured it as if it were some divinely exotic clam stuffing.

Is Le Viet’s Beauty More than Skin Deep?

Posted by Foobooz on July 7th, 2010

Adam Erace checks out the attractive Le Viet at 11th and Washington but wonders if there’s any depth to its beauty.

Sinh’s food is beautiful, adequate in taste but exquisite in presentation. It comes festooned with edible garnishes as ornately whittled as an armoire from the Lester Freamon Dollhouse Collection. Bowls like inverted Mayan pyramids brimmed with wispy vermicelli, shredded crab and a simmered-all-day broth that, unfortunately, only had simmered-15-minutes depth. More rice noodles came in bowls like upside-down turbans, these topped with a lot of pork, but not a lot of herbs. There were grand sundae glasses of rainbow ice overstuffed with green jello and red beans and a frosty soursop shake, which came with the surprise addition of black tapioca pearls—not unwanted, unlike the shake’s toothache sweetness. Fried bananas with coconut-doused ice cream were fine, in a P.F. Chang’s sort of way.
