Local 44 in West Philly is having two noteworthy events over Memorial Day weekend for those of us who are not lucky enough to be heading to the shore.

First, Local 44 is giving 20% off all can prices at The Bottle Shop from Saturday, May 25 through Monday, May 27 so you can stock up for the weekend. Naturally, they have labeled the event as “cantastic,” which is exactly what it is.

Having snack options at the movies other than popcorn are great, but popcorn is still our snack of choice. We just wish these restaurants and bars sold their varieties of popcorn in theaters.

Clown Shoes and Great Divide Also Taking Over Taps Today

Posted by Foobooz on March 25th, 2013

clown-shoes-great-divide

Kraftwork isn’t the only bar turning its tap handles over to an out-of-town brewer today. Starting at 4 p.m. this afternoon Fishtown’s Barcade will have 18 taps of Clown Shoes beers on tap. Some of Clown Shoes’ ingredients are unusual. There’s chocolate malt, ancho chili, cinnamon, and vanilla in their Chocolate Sombrero Stout and Clown Shoes Genghis Pecan is a porter brewed with brown sugar and roast pecans. Not sure if we believe this one but we’d still try it, Clown Shoes Vampire Slayer, an imperial Stout brewed with holy water, ash, and vampire killing stakes.

Over in West Philadelphia, Local 44 will be showcasing draft beers from Great Divide Brewing Company. The bar will be pouring Titan, Hercules, Orabelle, Heyday, Nomad, Colette, Chocolate Yeti, 19th Anniversary and some rare Vintage Yeti starting at 6 p.m..  Next door at the Local 44 Bottle Shop from 6-8 p.m., there will be complementary samples of other Great Divide beers and head brewer, Taylor Rees.

UPDATED: Election Day Specials Around Philadelphia

Posted by Maegan Cadet on November 5th, 2012

Okay, let’s face it: Tomorrow’s going to be a long day. More than likely, it’s going to be the kind of long day that stretches on long into the night, too. And when it’s done, about half of the country is going to be happy, while the other half is just furiously pissed off.

But whether a Democrat, a Republican or an Independent, a person’s gotta eat. And all over Philly, cafes and pubs alike are making sure you don’t spend election night alone and hungry with viewing parties and special Election Day deals.

Click through the jump to figure out where you want to spend Election Night.

Local 44 Announces Its First Ever Executive Chef

Posted by Foobooz on August 6th, 2012

Though Local 44 has been serving from scratch food since its opening almost four years ago, the West Philadelphia bar is just now hiring its first executive chef, Justin Bennett. The former chef de cuisine at Zinc and has also been spotted in the kitchens of Stateside, Kennett and The Corner comes to the job.

The menu changes will be rolled out slowly with the goal being to step up the food game at Local 44 and become more of a food destination.

Also of note, starting on Friday, August 10th the Bottle Shop at Local 44 will be slashing the prices on some inventory as they want to clear out some room for all of the Fall beers that are right around the corner.

Local 44′s Bottle Shop Opens Monday, More Pliny to be Tapped

Posted by Foobooz on March 16th, 2012

Bottle Shop at Local 44

On Monday, March 19th at 3 p.m. the Bottle Shop at Local 44 will open. The bottle shop will stock nearly 500 beers, almost 498 more bottles than Local 44 offers (the next door bar only stocks Orval and a gluten free beer by the bottle).

To celebrate the grand opening of the Bottle Shop, owners Brendan Hartranft and Leigh Maida have a hat trick of specials planned. At Local 44, it will be a special day of Russian River; Pliny the Elder, Pliny the Younger, Supplication and Consecration on draft. That all kicks off at 11:30 a.m.

Then when the doors to the Bottle Shop at Local 44 open at  3 p.m. there will be a complimentary cask of Yards ESA pouring.

Also at 3 p.m., just when all that Russian River beer should be kicking, Victory Brewing will be bringing in an impressive selection of their beers.

Pliny the Younger in Town, Bunch of Confirmed Tappings

Posted by Foobooz on February 28th, 2012

Pliny the Younger fever is heating up as the rare and highly sought after Russian River beer was delivered to local bars yesterday. City Tap House’s Andy Farrell tweeted a photo of the white whale of the beer world.

The beer is a triple IPA and its late winter release creates a nerdy hysteria across the country. The vast majority of the beer is distributed in California and the Pacific Northwest with some kegs making it to Denver. In past years Philadelphia has been the only East Coast city to receive shipments and it looks like that’s the case this year too (Take that DC, Boston, New York!). Farrell’s already fielded phone calls from Washington DC, Trenton and New Brunswick, New Jersey about his plans for tapping the sixtel.

Who gets to pour the beer is almost as geekily anticipated as who gets to drink it. This marks the first year that City Tap House will have a sixtel and of course Farrell and company are planning an event around the tapping.

UPDATE #7: We’ve moved our coverage to a listing format. Check it out here.
