Citron & Rose Moves Forward

Posted by Jason Sheehan on May 14th, 2013

citron-rose

The last time we heard anything from Citron & Rose–the kosher restaurant opened in Merion by David Magerman, Michael Solomonov and Steve Cook–it was that Cook, Solo and their chef, Yehuda Sichel were leaving. It was a weird moment and no one really seemed to know what to make of the sudden rupturing of the partnership that had brought to the Main Line one of the most interesting restaurants it’d seen in years.

But now there’s new news from C&R, and it’s pretty big.

New Happy Hour Menu At The St. James

Posted by Jason Sheehan on March 20th, 2013

Okay, so the St. James in Ardmore has been going through some rough times. But as partner Michael Schulson explained when we talked to him a couple weeks back, he isn’t giving up the fight on the Main Line. He’s been re-doing menus, firing kitchen crew and working the line himself at the embattled joint in order to bring it back from the brink.

And now, he has a new happy hour menu that just got announced (it launches at 4pm today). And while no, we don’t believe that some pickles and sliders can completely turn a place around, that shrimp roll certainly does seem to be a step in the right direction.

Major Drama at Circles Bala Cynwyd… Is it Closed? Is it Open?

Posted by Victor Fiorillo on February 12th, 2013

CIRCLES-LOGO

My previously Thai-deprived, bougie Main Line friends have been raving about the Bala Cynwyd outpost of Circles since it opened in early December. But now, just two months after the first dinner service, Circles Bala Cynwyd has closed.

Is The Main Line A New Restaurant Boom-Town?

Posted by Jason Sheehan on January 14th, 2013

solo-main-line

Or boom-neighborhood, I guess. Or boom-region?

Whatever.

Over on the Insider, they’re reporting that yet another “Center City operation” is looking at branching out into the ‘burbs. Following in the footsteps of Michael Solomonov and Steve Cook (who opened Citron & Rose in Bala-Cynwyd last year) and Michael Schulson and Rob Wasserman (who brought The St. James to Ardmore), it looks like Nick Pashalis (of Estia and Pietro’s Coal-Oven Pizzeria) has his eye on a former Buca di Beppo on Lancaster Avenue in Wynnewood.

The project is a long way off (and will, eventually, become two projects, with the massive space being divided up between another Pietro’s and a casual version of Pashalis’s Estia), but what’s important here is that this now makes three large operators who’ve taken a look at the situation in Center City, then taken a look at the long-neglected scene out on the Main Line, and decided that maybe it was time to make the big jump. And the reason I find this mini-trend so interesting? Because it’s something we were talking about more than a year ago, when Philly mag’s Neighborhoods issue hit the stands.

Citron & Rose Has An Opening Date (And A Menu)

Posted by Jason Sheehan on November 2nd, 2012

While it seems like we’ve been waiting forever for Michael Solomonov and Steve Cook to get their newest (non-fried-chicken-and-donut) concept off the ground, we now have official word that Citron & Rose, the partners’ Glatt kosher deli at 370 Montgomery Avenue in Merion, will be opening to the public at 5pm on Wednesday, November 7. Honest to god, this has to be the best food news to happen on the Main Line in forever.

But we don’t just have the opening date. We’ve also got some details on the menu and the kosher cocktails (yeah, you read that right) being put together by Cook, Solo and chef Yehuda Sichel. Check ‘em out after the jump.

Golden Bowl In Ardmore Has Most Honest Chinese Fortunes

Posted by Victor Fiorillo on May 10th, 2012

Stopped into the brand-new-but-two-years-in-the-making Golden Bowl Chinese restaurant in Ardmore for steamed choi sum, General Tso’s, Peking duck, dumplings and more. The food was solid and a vast improvement over Chung Sing, a little better than Hunan (which recently improved dramatically), and almost as good as (and certainly cheaper than) Sang Kee ($56.08 to feed four with leftovers), to name three of the more popular Chinese restaurants in the area.

But the real highlight had to be the fortunes, the best of which I share above. For the gamblers among you, the lucky numbers on the back: 18, 19, 40, 7, 15 and 27.

Best Of Philly: Caesar Salad In A Jar?

Posted by Jason Sheehan on May 2nd, 2012

So we were just hanging around Foobooz World Headquarters today when word came that someone had delivered lunch. This was strange since none of us had ordered lunch, but then we remembered: Best of Philly season is upon us, and one of the best things about Best of Philly season? Unexpected treats arriving at the front desk from those trying to earn a little notice for themselves.

In this case, it was a delivery from Drawbag–the new take-away lunch and dinner operation from Main Line chef Larry Ward of Ward Catering. Included were a couple of sandwiches, some less-than-inspiring three-mushroom arancini (three mushrooms is about two mushrooms too many in any application), a crimini-and-black truffle soup and that…thing pictured above.

So what is that thing, exactly?

Q&A: Zahav’s Michael Solomonov On His New Main Line Restaurant, Citron and Rose

Posted by Victor Fiorillo on March 15th, 2012

Citron and Rose

This morning, we reported that Zahav’s Michael Solomonov had set his sights on the Main Line. This afternoon, he got in touch to talk more about Citron and Rose, the upcoming glatt kosher restaurant at 368 Montgomery Avenue in Merion that he hopes to open this summer.

So, beyond the glatt kosher designation, what’s the idea behind Citron and Rose?
Well, we focus on the Balkans and Middle East and Mediterranean at Zahav. This is going to be more European Jewish food that is also going to be glatt kosher. We’ve been kicking it around for a while. [Business partner] Steven [Cook] and I, a few months after we opened Zahav, we went to Montreal. We were interested in the Romanian Jewish food that ended up there, and that’s what prompted us to do this. But it’s going to be kosher, too, so we’re not technically owners. Celebrate National Margarita Day at Distrito in University City (And Elsewhere)

Posted by Jason Sheehan on February 22nd, 2012

Happy National Margarita Day everyone!

As far as made-up holiday go, National Margarita Day always features prominently on the calendars ’round Foobooz World HQ–a day ordained by the agave gods for the drinking of high-proof cactus juice and getting weird in public. And while Philadelphia as a whole doesn’t go nuts for the day, there are a few places around town throwing down in South of the Border fashion.

Show me the list (and a video)
