Mardi Gras in Philadelphia

Posted by Foobooz on February 12th, 2013

It’s well into the afternoon, so I’m assuming at least some of you have begun your Mardi Gras celebrations. Alas, most of you are at work, so yes, it’s completely understandable that you spitefully put a little “extra love” in your coffee this morning because “the man” is holding you back from partying it up in New Orleans fashion. Hopefully, work will be over sooner rather than later, and you’ll be able to get out there and enjoy some of the awesome Mardi Gras celebrations happening here in Philly. Thus, we’ve devised for you a game-plan of sorts; a roadmap to weekday debauchery, a blueprint to a “successful” Fat Tuesday, a how-to for the inexperienced, and a manual for a Mardi Gras in Philly perfected.

King Cakes From Beck’s Cajun Cafe

Posted by Jason Sheehan on February 15th, 2012

I know, it’s not like many Foobooz readers need an excuse for eating cinnamon rolls in the middle of the day. But if, for some reason (strict diet, naggy significant other, orders from your cardiologist), you are on some kind of draconian weight loss regimen that does not allow sugary breakfast treats to be eaten in the afternoon (or at all), may I present the King Cake.

What it is, is a braided yeast cake, filled with cinnamon and nuts, and topped with white icing and colored sugar sprinkles–so basically a cinnamon roll with some extra sugar poured on top. And yeah, it is just as tasty as it sounds. What’s more, it’s a traditional Mardi Gras cake, served all over the Big Easy this time of year, so if anyone gives you any crap for eating rainbow-colored cake for lunch, you can always claim that you’re eating one (or two, or three) just to get in the spirit of the season.

Down at Reading Terminal Market, Beck’s Cajun Cafe has individual cakes on the menu right now, and will make ring-cake versions (also very traditional) that will serve 15-20 with a day’s notice. So what are you waiting for?

The Great Philadelphia Crawfish Shortage of 2011

Posted by Victor Fiorillo on March 8th, 2011

If you’re looking to celebrate Mardi Gras (it’s today, in case you forgot) by heading out for crawfish and beer, you should probably know that some of the spots planning on selling mudbugs for the special occasion are S.O.L.

Chris’ Jazz Cafe – progenitors of the Crawfish Cheesesteak – ordered more than 300 pounds yesterday for a live shoot this morning on NBC 10, and it was a tense moment when they showed up at the FedEx facility on Grays Ferry to pick them up, since no crawfish would mean no TV coverage. (The farm in Louisiana doesn’t ship on Sundays and crawfish don’t stay alive for very long, hence the last minute rush.)

Well, they got their crawfish, and the TV shoot went fine. Problem is, they got way too many. Over lunch, as one table sucked the heads from a $10 bucket and another scarfed down crawfish cheesesteaks, FedEx called and informed the kitchen that they accidentally gave Chris’ not just their 300+ pounds of crawfish, but also nearly 200 pounds more that were supposed to be distributed to other restaurants via a local distributor, meaning Chris’ could very well have every last crawfish in Philadelphia.

“I told them they can come pick them up,” says chef Mark Deninno. “But they’re currently running around in my kitchen.”

If you want to help Chris’ work its way through some 500 pounds of live crawfish, today is the all day Mardi Gras party with $25 all-you-can-eats, $10 buckets, $3 Abita beers, $5 hurricanes and Sazeracs, $10 buckets of Coronitas, all the beads and king cake you can handle, and a 7 p.m. set by the Hoppin’ John Orchestra. We’ll see you there.

Mardi Gras Fun All Around

House-made boudin over confit pork, smokey beans, topped with pickled red cabbage

Catahoula | House-made boudin

This Mardi Gras marks the 10th anniversary of the South Street Mardi Gras riots. Here are some worthwhile events that shouldn’t devolve into mayhem.

Catahoula – The Front Street Louisiana spot will be offering special dishes like crawfish croquettes, house-made boudin with pork confit, and Sweet D’s Louisiana chocolate mud cake topped with bourbon icing. There will also be an Abita tap takeover and Hurricane carafe specials.

Chris’ Jazz Cafe – $25 gets you all-you-can-eat crawfish throughout the day and night. There will also be $5 gumbo, Sazeracs and Hurricanes plus $3 beers from Louisiana brewer, Abita. At 6:45 p.m., the Nawlins’-inspired Hoppin’ John Orchestra will march down Broad Street, Bourbon Street style, proceeding down Sansom and onto Chris’ stage for a swinging 7 p.m. concert. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Greater New Orleans Foundation.
