We write a lot about chef collaboration dinners. About collaborations between kitchens and brewers or makers and purveyors. What we don’t write about so often is collaborations between artists working in the food world.
But recently, Marisa McClellan (of FoodInJars.com), Tenaya Darlington (MadameFromageBlog.com), the cheese nerds from DiBruno Bros. and Jason Varney (of VarneyPhoto.com, and the guy who shoots a lot of the really beautiful stuff you see in Philadelphia magazine every month) got together to do a little project of their own called “In Deep Autumn” and it is just beautiful.
There are recipes and pretty words, pairing suggestions and gorgeous photography. Posts about the project currently appear on the blogs of all concerned, but you can check out “In Deep Autumn” in its entirety by following the link below.
Go on and click it. You’ll be glad you did. Consider it an early Thanksgiving present to yourself.

Once in a while there come a few great books that Foobooz World HQ deems interesting enough to satisfy the most curious culinary minds. These two new fascinating reads might not qualify as beach reading but they would surely have Oprah’s little book club shaking in its live-studio-audience-having boots.
Marisa McClellan of the popular blog www.foodinjars.com has written every locavore’s dream in Food in Jars: Preserving in Small Batches Year-Round. The book features over 100 recipes of jams, chutneys, pickles, and even flavored salts. For beginners or masters, this guide helps you store everything in your garden from harvest time to next summer. But you don’t have to be saving enough food to survive the zombie apocalypse: McClellan’s guide features small batch recipes like those she makes in her own Philadelphia apartment. We think the Vanilla-Rhubarb Jam with Earl Grey sounds like a challenge we’d like to take on.

I know, Michael Solomonov has already grabbed the headlines today by walking away with a win in the Best Chef Mid-Atlantic category at last night’s James Beard Awards ceremony. But you know what? He’s not the only local guy with some skin in the food awards game.
No, ’tis the season for medals, plaques and certificates, after all. As a matter of fact, right now, Saveur magazine is in the final days of their 2011 Best Food Blog Awards. As with Solomonov in Manhattan last night, Philly has got a couple locals in the running, and guess what?
They could use a little love from the hometown fans.
