Okay, let’s face it: Tomorrow’s going to be a long day. More than likely, it’s going to be the kind of long day that stretches on long into the night, too. And when it’s done, about half of the country is going to be happy, while the other half is just furiously pissed off.

30 Cent Drinks at McGillin’s … in 1933

Posted by Aubrey Nagle on September 27th, 2012

If you’re looking for a cheap drink try McGillin’s Olde Ale House … circa 1933. A South Philadelphia resident recently found a bit of history from the tavern dating back almost 80 years. Eddie Stanten (with McGillin’s owner Chris Mullin’s Jr, above) found a few old books almost twenty years ago, including a very old scrapbook, being left out for trash. An avid reader, Eddie saved them but ended up accidentally leaving them at an old friend’s house. Just recently Eddie got those books back and within the old scrapbook found a menu from McGillin’s from 1933. When he found out McGillin’s was still around, Eddie dropped by to show current owners.

Around The Web: Secret Suppers

Posted by Jason Sheehan on September 18th, 2012

An Irish cheesesteak, foie-kebabs, Nutella pizza and a simple plate of spaghetti at a restaurant known for somewhat more complicated presentations–these are just a few of the secret plates uncovered by Grub Street Philly in an excellent investigation that hit the interwebs this afternoon.

There are a million dishes in the naked city, but not all of them are listed on menus. And there’s no single answer why chefs and restaurateurs keep these secrets. Some are things that were replaced in menu updates, but remain tastes that loyal customers can’t live with out; other are simply special plates reserved for celebrities, high rollers and dearly loved regulars.

So check it out, won’t you? All 8 of the plates that made Grub’s list sound like they would make an excellent dinner tonight. Though something tells me you might not be the only fella in the dining room looking for those foie kebabs…

Philly is the Late-Night Capital of the US

Posted by Aubrey Nagle on August 9th, 2012

According to the September issue of Esquire, Philadelphia is the Late-Night Capital of these here United States. The issue’s late-night eats guide contains essays about the difference between truck stops and diners, the glory that is poutine (I’d say we agree), and tons of recipes for manly food to be eaten in the wee hours of the morning. Esquire even lists all the best late-night foods from all over America– from egg rolls in Chicago to fried chicken in Louisville– but without mentioning a single food from Philly. Why? Because we got our own article about why we’re the best ever, that’s why.

And while Philadelphia as a whole doesn’t go nuts for the day, there are a few places around town throwing down in South of the Border fashion.
