Four Local Restaurants on United States of Bacon Tonight

Posted by Foobooz on February 25th, 2013

Tonight at 7 p.m. on Destination America, formerly Discovery Home & Leisure, is featuring four local restaurants on United States of Bacon. As you might expect there’s a ton of bacon on the show but we have to raise an eyebrow over the inclusion of McNally’s Tavern’s Schmitter. Surely a great gluttonous sandwich, but as the diagram above shows, bacon is not a normal part of the Schmitter. Now bacon is available for a dollar add-on, but who needs bacon when you already have steak, grilled salami, cheese, fried onions, tomatos, special sauce and even more cheese?

Philadelphia Ties in the Latest Lucky Peach

Posted by Foobooz on July 6th, 2012

Issue 4 of Lucky Peach is now on newsstands and there are a couple of local connections within David Chang’s quarterly journal of food and writing. Tom Lax profiles the Schmitter for a foodie audience. The Schmitter of course is a combination of cheese, steak, grilled salami, tomatoes, fried onions and special sauce served on a kaiser roll. It’s the sandwich of record at McNally’s in Chestnut Hill, and can also be found at Citizens Bank Park and Lincoln Financial Field. Hawk Krall who seems to be everywhere right now also has an illustration featured in the magazine. Look for the American Food Issue of Lucky Peach at Barnes and Noble or do what we did and pick up a copy at Cook.

Hot Sandwich Safari Finals Shaping Up

Posted by Foobooz on July 16th, 2010

Each year Glen Macnow exhaustively tracks down the best in a Philly food category. Last year he crowned Paesano’s Daddy Wad as the best hoagie in the area.

This year he’s back looking for the best hot specialty sandwich. That means no hoagies or cheesesteaks need apply. It also means lots of great hot roast beef and pork.

On Thursday the Hot Sandwich Safari Finals will be held at The Fieldhouse at 11th and Filbert. The top six finishers will be present to make their sandwiches.

Celebrity judges will join Glen Macnow to crown the champion. Listeners who show up will also have a chance to taste the sandwiches and crown the Listeners’ Choice Award.

Macnow’s top six currently looks like this:

  1. Roast Beef on the Outs, Old Original Nick’s Roast Beef
  2. The Schmitter, McNally’s Tavern
  3. Chicken Italiano, Shank’s Pier 40
  4. Hot Pastrami on Rye, Hershel’s East Side Deli
  5. Hot Roast Pork, Carlino’s Specialty Foods
  6. Meatball Sandwich, Pastaficio Homemade Pasta Co.

Dispatches From Dave: Inside Oyster House

Posted by david fields on June 5th, 2009

Here’s a quick look at the new Oyster House on its opening night, featuring some deft shucking by one of the chefs. The space is a sophisticated modernization of the old Sansom Street Oyster House, with an L-shaped oyster bar and overall good vibe! Looking forward to an oyster sampler, some cherrystones, and a Victory beer.
